Edinboro tops CSU, remains undefeated in EWL

CLEVELAND, Oh. -- The Edinboro wrestling team won its fifth straight dual match on Saturday, handling Cleveland State by a 39-6 score at Woodling Gymnasium in an Eastern Wrestling League match. More importantly, the Fighting Scots boosted their streak of EWL matches without a loss to 29 straight. They are 27-0-2 during that period.

The victory boosted Edinboro to 7-4 overall and 4-0 in the EWL. A rebuilding Cleveland State team is now 2-14 and 0-4, respectively.

The Fighting Scots won eight of ten matches, picking up bonus points in seven of the wins. Three Fighting Scots won by fall.

For the second night in a row Edinboro’s lightweights fueled a fast getaway. The Scots won the first five bouts to jump out to a 23-0 lead. Eric Morrill got the match started with a 25-7 technical fall over Ronald Butler at 125 lbs. The Boro junior is ranked seventh by Amateur Wrestling News and eighth by InterMat, and improved to 28-4.

Kyle Fluke made it two straight tech falls as the senior disposed of Zech Huff, 17-2, at 133 lbs. It marked the second straight night the senior won by bonus points in his return from injury. Fluke boosted his record to 12-8.

Joel Webster gave Edinboro a 13-0 lead after a 13-2 major decision over Mike Mencini at 141 lbs. That gives Webster a 15-10 record. Torsten Gillespie followed with his second fall in two nights at 149 lbs., this one coming at 3:51 over Dan Castillo. It was Gillespie’s fifth fall of the season and gives the junior a 23-12 record.

Johnny Greisheimer closed out Edinboro’s string of five straight wins with a 9-4 decision over Corey Carlo at 157 lbs. That gives the freshman a 21-17 ledger.

Cleveland State registered its lone wins of the night at 165 and 174 lbs. Rob Michaels won a 5-0 decision over Chris Hrunka, who was filling in for third-ranked Jarrod King at 165 lbs. Hrunka falls to 1-8 with Michael’s a team-leading 14-8 for the Vikings. Former national qualifier Marcus Effner recorded a 6-1 decision over Paul Paddock at 174 lbs., as Paddock falls to 1-4 with Effner improving to 12-8. Paddock was once again filling in for injured starter Phil Morocone

Edinboro would go on to win the final three matches, including back-to-back falls at 184 and 197 lbs. Pat Bradshaw earned career win number 91 while boosting his season chart to 24-11 with a fall at 4:14 over Nick Anthony at 184 lbs.
