Edinboro finishes runner-up at Virginia Duals

EDINBORO, Pa. -- After vanquishing 2013 Virginia Duals champion Virginia Tech in the semifinals, the Edinboro wrestling team hoped to bring home the championship trophy from the Virginia Duals for the first time since 2007. They would come up short, however, falling to 13th-ranked Virginia 20-19 in the finals. The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for the Fighting Scots as they fell to 4-3. Virginia is now 11-2.

As usual, the Fighting Scots got off to a fast start, but they were unable to defeat the Cavaliers in the upper weights. Virginia ran off five straight wins after Edinboro took a 13-3 lead, leaving Ernest James pin at heavyweight impressive but a point short of victory.

Kory Mines, ranked 17th by Amateur Wrestling News, fell to 15-6 as he dropped a 3-2 decision to Nick Herrmann. Tied at 1-1, Herrmann would record the winning takedown with 30 seconds left in the match.

A.J. Schopp, ranked third by InterMat and fourth by AWN at 133 lbs., won for the 11th time this season and 48th in his by fall, pinning Joe Martinez at 3:45. The victory boosted Schopp's record to 21-1.

Mitchell Port, the top-ranked wrestler at 141 lbs., followed with a 7-2 decision over Joe Spisak, who came in ranked 13th by Amateur Wrestling News and 16th by InterMat. Port registered a pair of takedowns along with a second period reversal to remain undefeated at 17-0.

Edinboro's advantage moved to 13-3 when Dave Habat recorded a 13-4 major decision over Chris Yankowich at 149 lbs. The redshirt junior, ranked 13th by InterMat and 14th by Amateur Wrestling News, would register five takedowns as he moved his record to 18-4.

Unfortunately, the Fighting Scots would not win again until the heavyweight bout, with Virginia running off five straight wins. Johnny Greisheimer (16-7), ranked 18th by Amateur Wrestling News and 20th by InterMat, saw his six match winning streak come to an end against Blaise Butler at 157 lbs. Butler, ranked 13th, won a 14-8 decision.

Third-ranked Nick Sulzer followed with a 17-4 major decision over Zach Towers (6-7) at 165 lbs., closing the gap to 13-10.
With regular starter Vic Avery out at 184 lbs. due to an injury, head coach Tim Flynn flipped his lineup around at 174 and 184 lbs. He sent out Nick Mitchell (6-8) at 174 and Patrick Jennings (7-7) at 184, but it failed to work as UVa. won both matches. Mitchell dropped an 8-3 decision to tenth-ranked Stephen Doty, and Jennings fell by an 8-0 major decision to Jon Fausey, who was ranked 18th by InterMat.

Now trailing 17-13, Edinboro needed wins in the last two bouts to come away with the crown. Vince Pickett grabbed an early 2-0 lead in his 197 lb. match with Zach Nye, but he would ultimately lose 6-4.

James capped an outstanding weekend as he won by fall at 3:18 over Ethan Hayes, ranked 20th by Amateur Wrestling News, at heavyweight. James, ranked 17th by Amateur Wrestling News and 19th by InterMat, improved to 17-5 with his seventh fall of the season and 36th of his career.
