CSU Bakersfield wins in Boise for first time since 1993

BOISE, Idaho -- CSU Bakersfield earned its first Pac-12 wrestling dual victory at Boise State since 1993 Saturday as the Roadrunners defeated the Broncos 20-14.

The dual began at 125 pounds where Sean Nickell gave the Roadrunners the lead with an 8-5 decision against Will Bardezbain. Carlos Herrera trailed 5-3 late in the second period in the 133-pound bout versus Josh Newburg. Herrera caught Newburg for a 3-point near fall to end the second before using an escape and a take down to take a 9-5 lead at the end of regulation. With riding time, Herrera earned a 10-5 victory.

At 141 pounds, Russell Rohlfing dominated Rami Haddadin, earning the technical fall at the final whistle of the third period, 18-1. Coleman Hammond made it four in a row for the 'Runners when he defeated Dakota Wall 7-3 in the 149-pound bout.

The Broncos (1-5, 0-1 Pac-12) got on the board at 157 when Fred Green defeated Jacob Thalin by major decision 14-6. Lorenzo De La Riva trailed Demetrius Romero 5-2 in the second period before rallying to take a 6-5 victory. De La Riva earned a pair of escapes to get the score to 5-4. He took Romero down with 40 seconds remaining in the third and road the Bronco out to put the win away.

Austin Dewery charted Boise State's second major of the day when he defeated Matt Penyacsek 17-5 at 174 pounds. A second period escape combined with a takedown with 34 seconds remaining gave Kadyn Del Toro a 3-2 victory against Bryan Battisto at 184 pounds.

After leading for most of the match, Matt Williams had to go to overtime, but Williams defeated Harley DiLulo 6-4 to clinch CSUB's first dual victory in Boise since Feb. 12, 1993 when the 'Runners defeated the Broncos 23-11 (a span of seven duals). Gabriel Gonzalez defeated Dominic Balmer 5-1 at heavyweight to conclude the dual.

"We had better effort today," said CSUB head coach Manny Rivera. "We controlled positions better and had better results."

The Roadrunners (4-3, 1-1 Pac-12) travel to Santa Maria, Calif. next Saturday for a tri-dual at Righetti High School against Cal Poly and North Dakota State. CSUB wrestles NDSU at 2 p.m. before competing in the Pac-12 dual against the Mustangs at 6 p.m.
