    CSU Bakersfield handles Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- The CSU Bakersfield wrestling team won the first five bouts of its Pac-12 dual against Cal Poly Friday night and never looked back. The Roadrunners tamed the Mustangs, winning eight bouts in total, on the way to a 26-9 road victory in the Mott Athletic Center.

"We wrestled well tonight," said Manny Rivera, Head Coach of the `Runner. "The boys showed up. We were trying to make a statement against Cal Poly…Anytime we get to compete well, it's a pretty good day. We didn't wrestle perfect, we didn't quite execute everything, but definitely momentum has been on our side and we just have to keep it going."

At 125 pounds, Alex Hernandez-Figueroa dominated his way to 7-1 decision over Cal Poly's Benny Martinez. In the 133-pound bout, Chance Rich kept the `Runner momentum rolling with a 5-1 decision over Cole Reyes before Angelo Martinoni (141) used a big second period to rout Jake Ryan, 15-5.

Russell Rohlfing kept his outstanding senior season going as the 149-pounder earned a 7-3 decision against Wyatt Cornelison. Bakersfield's success continued into the 157-pound bout, which turned out to be the most thrilling of the match. Wyatt Gerl found himself tied with Brawley Lamer late in the third period, but riding time was in Lamer's favor. With three seconds remaining, Gerl squeaked out a reversal and took a 4-3 victory, extending Bakersfield's lead to 16-0.

Cal Poly picked up the first of its two victories on the night when Bernie Truax won by tech fall, 15-0, over Jacob Thalin (165). In the 174-pound bout, Albert Urias led Dylan Miracle by one point in the third period. Urias gave up an escape, but quickly got back in control with another takedown and earned a 4-2 decision.

At 184, Josh Loomer raced out to an early lead against Trent Tracy and finished off an 11-3 major decision to make Bakersfield's lead 23-5. Against the 11th-ranked 197-pounder Tom Lane, Josh Annis suffered a 17-4 defeat, but Jarrod Snyder would take the heavyweight bout, 2-0, to seal the `Runner victory.

With the win, CSUB improved to 6-5 on the season and 2-1 against Pac-12 competition. The `Runners have now won four of their last five matches and will need that momentum rolling into their toughest test of the season.

On Sunday, Feb. 16, Arizona State (12-1, 3-0 Pac-12) will come to Bakersfield for the second annual Feud on the Field. The `Runners will host the Sun Devils at the Main Soccer Field at 12 p.m. Tickets for the exciting dual are available ahead of time at GoRunners.com/tickets or at the gate.
