Schlatter, who re-entered the rankings at No. 3 in the nation in this week's coaches' poll, knocked off then-No. 2 Trent Paulson of Iowa State, 5-4, in the Gophers' 24-11 semifinal win over the Cyclones. He followed by rallying for a pivotal 6-5 win over No. 12 Michael Chandler of Missouri to help lift the Gophers to a 20-16 win in the finals. After trailing 3-0 entering the final period against Chandler, Schlatter scored three takedowns to earn the victory to give the Gophers a 14-4 lead in the dual.
Schlatter has compiled a 13-2 record on the season, with his only two losses coming at the Northeast Duals on Nov. 25, the same weekend he went down with the knee injury. He has three major decisions and two tech falls to his credit.
Schlatter is the second Golden Gopher to earn TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week award this season, following Gabriel Dretsch, who earned the honor for the week of Dec. 5-11 after posting a pair of pivotal wins in Minnesota victories over Oklahoma State and Iowa State.
Each week, TheMat.com selects an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee considers any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement is made each week on Wednesday.
