Cornell defeats Columbia, Dean sets school record

ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell senior Gabe Dean became the school's career leader in bonus point wins with a first-minute fall as ninth-ranked Cornell dominated the second half of the meet in a 34-9 win over Columbia on Saturday afternoon at University Gymnasium. The Big Red improved to 10-2 on the season while extending its Ivy League win streak to 76 matches.

Dean earned the fall over Jacob Young just 38 seconds into his match to collect his 94th bonus point victory, surpassing four-time All-American Cam Simaz (93). His 18th win by fall of the season also matched Kyle Dake's senior campaign on the single season charts and has pinned five straight opponents. He has collected falls in each of his three Ivy League matches, wrestling a total of 6:35 - not even one full period. Thirteen of his pins this season have come in the first period.

Dean's continued dominance overshadowed an early Big Red deficit, as Columbia led 9-3 after three matches. Cornell answered in a big way - seven consecutive wins to cruise to the victory.

Noah Baughman opened the match with a hard-fought 4-0 win over Johnson Mai at 125, but the Lions responded with a fall at 133 and a third period tilt that allowed for a Columbia decision at 141.

Jonathan Furnas got Cornell back within 9-6 with a 5-1 victory over Sam Ward, and Taylor Simaz put the visitors in the lead for good with a first period fall over Tyler Oberg at 157. Senior Brian Realbuto's pin at 174 put the Big Red on the verge of winning, then Dean's fall put Cornell over the top for the program's 74th straight win over an unranked opponent. the nationally-ranked Big Red also scored bonus points from Jake Anderson at 197, an 11-2 winner over Michael Bulkin.

Two of the more exciting matches of the night came at 165 and 285, with Cornell coming out on top in both. Brandon Womack gained a takedown in the final 10 seconds to knock off Tyrel White, 3-1, and Craig Scott's third period reversal after Garrett Ryan tied the match with a takedown ended with a 6-2 Big Red victory.

Cornell will have a chance to clinch its 15th straight Ivy title next weekend when both Penn (Friday, Feb. 10) and Princeton (Saturday, Feb. 11) visit the Friedman Wrestling Center.
