Columbia defeats Brown in 16-15 stunner

NEW YORK -- Columbia needed every point possible to get by Brown in an EIWA wrestling dual, as the Lions topped the Bears, 16-15. Columbia won on criteria, having a 47-46 edge in total match points to move to 5-1 in duals on the season.

The win was the third of the weekend for the Lions, who topped Buffalo (18-15) and Binghamton (18-17) yesterday.

After the Bears came away with wins in the first two matches of the day, Joe Moita got the Lions on the board with a 3-0 win over Charlie Banaszak.

Brown would surge ahead to a 12-3 lead with victories in the 149 and 157-pound bouts, before Tyrel White came away with a sudden victory win. Tied 1-1 after regulation, John Viruet was hit with his second stalling call to give the Columbia sophomore a 165-pound win.

At 174, Zack Hernandez was close to bonus points, coming away with a 10-4 win over Andrew LaBrie. Going into the 184-pound match, Columbia trailed 12-9, but a last second takedown by Austin Pfarr gave Brown three more team points, as Pfarr was able to comeback to beat Mike Fetchet, 5-4.

With two matches remaining, the Lions trailed 15-9, and needed two wins just to have a chance for a team victory on criteria. Troy Hembury and Garrett Ryan were able to deliver, as Hembury topped Gus Marker, 10-6, and Ryan came away with a 7-3 win over Joshua Durso-Finley. With no bonus points on either side during the 5-5 match split, the Lions were awarded one additional team point with a 47-46 edge in total points.

With three wins this weekend, Columbia improves to 5-1 overall, and a perfect 4-0 in EIWA duals.

The Lions return to the mats next weekend in Hempstead, New York, with matches against Clarion, Sacred Heart and Hofstra on Sunday, January 24.
