Central Oklahoma wins 500th dual with rout

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Casy Rowell scored a second-period fall to lead five bonus-point wins for Central Oklahoma and the fifth-ranked Bronchos rolled over Oklahoma City 30-9 here Wednesday night at Abe Lemons Arena.

It was the 500th win in program history for UCO, which won the first seven matches in jumping out to a 30-0 lead over the NAIA No. 12-rated Stars. The Bronchos, now 7-4 on the season, return to action Friday when they host Truman State at 7 p.m.

Rowell had the lone pin of the night at 133 pounds, with UCO also getting major decisions from 141 Dustin Reed, 157 Cory Dauphin and 165 Chris Watson in addition to picking up one forfeit. Josh Breece (125) and Jordan Basks (149) earned regular decisions for the Bronchos.

“We’ll take the win and move on,” said head coach David James of the victory that improved UCO’s all-time record to 500-224-11. “We looked pretty solid in a few weights and a little sloppy in others, but we did what we needed to do.”

Breece used a takedown with three seconds left in the second period to take a 3-2 lead after trailing 2-0 and added a third-period near-fall en route to picking up UCO’s first win on the mat after Cody Dauphin earned an opening forfeit at heavyweight.

Rowell rolled to his 10th bonus-point win of the season and improved to 19-3 with his second-period fall, racking up six takedowns and a near-fall before ending the match at the 4:23 mark.

Reed continued UCO’s onslaught at 141, recording three first-period takedowns in taking a 6-2 lead and then finishing off a 13-3 major decision with two takedowns and a near-fall in the final stanza while racking up more than four minutes riding time.

Top-ranked Basks needed a last-second escape in the second period to break a 2-2 tie with Ricky McCarty and then pulled away with a third-period takedown and near-fall to run his record to 27-1.

No. 1 Cory Dauphin used a four-point move in the final five seconds of the opening period to take a 6-1 lead over NAIA’s third-ranked Zach Skates before adding a takedown and near-fall in the final minute to polish off the major decision that pushed his winning streak to 37 straight.

Watson pushed UCO’s lead to 30-0 with a 9-1 rout at 165, scoring two takedowns, a near-fall and a reverse to go with nearly five minutes riding time as the top-rated junior moved to 22-1 on the season.

The Stars picked up their first win at 174 where fifth-ranked Derek Sivertsen edged Zach Aylor 3-2. Aylor nearly scored a go-ahead takedown twice in the final period, but Sivertsen was able to fend him off and hold on for the win.

UCO moved Kasey Wilcox up a weight to fill in for Znick Ferrell at 184 and dropped a 6-1 decision, while Garrett Henshaw fell 3-2 at 197 in the final bout of the night.
