Caldwell leads North Carolina State to three victories

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Darrion Caldwell picked up a pair of pins and a technical fall, all three matches ending in the first period, to lead NC State to a sweep of its three matches in the NC State Duals, held Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum.

Caldwell and Joe Caramanica ended the Wolfpack's opening-round bout with Gardner-Webb with first-period pins to help NC State pull away 29-13. Ryan Goodman and Jalil Dozier had major decisions, and Taylor Cummings won a technical fall as the Pack scored big points and pulled away late.

In the second round of the day, the Wolfpack wrestled both Anderson and Campbell, defeating Anderson 42-9 behind pins by Caldwell and Ryan Goodman, and technical falls from Cummings and Caramanica. The Pack dumped Campbell 29-6 thanks in part to technical falls from Goodman and Caldwell.

The three match sweep improves NC State to 4-5 in dual matches. Caldwell, ranked No. 9 at 149, is now 19-3 on the season, one win shy of his total for all of the 2006-07 season. He now has 11 pins for the season, one more than when he set the school record for pins by a freshman a year ago, and 21 for his career. He ranks eighth in school history for career pins.

Caramanica improved to 19-4 for the season, and 62-23 for his career. Goodman is now 10-4 for the year and 54-14 for his career.

NC State will be in action again on Wednesday, January 9 at Duke. The match will begin at 7 p.m.
