Buena Vista tops Simpson in thriller

After Simpson College won by fall to begin the dual, the Buena Vista wrestling team then won four of the next five weight classes to build a 17-10 lead and hung on in the end to top the Storm, 24-19, in an Iowa Conference thriller inside of Siebens Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

The dual began at 197 pounds, and the Storm took the early lead before Gable Bonner won an exciting 4-3 decision at 285 pounds. Bonner trailed 1-0 heading to the third before quickly tying things up at 1-1 just 20 seconds into the final period. That's the way things stood at the end of regulation and after the first overtime period. Bonner then took a 2-1 lead with an escape with less than five seconds left in the first sudden death before Simpson tied things up at 2-2. Bonner then got a thrilling takedown with under 10 seconds left before letting his opponent go with just a second left for the final score.

Senior Branden Schultz put the Beavers in front, 9-6, as he won by forfeit at 125 pounds before Slade Stiles made it a 13-6 advantage with his 21-10 triumph at 133.

Jeff Sand picked up a penalty point with just 10 seconds left to go with riding time to win an 11-3 major decision for the Storm at 141 pounds over Cam Mennenoh.

Junior Steve Gutschenritter improved to 10-4 on the year with his commanding 11-1 major decision at 149 pounds to push the Beaver lead up to 17-10.

Simpson pulled back within a point at 17-16 when Jacob Mize won by pin over Drake Swedlund at 157 pounds.

Seth Shatto kept BVU in the lead as he picked up two takedowns and a reversal over the final five minutes of his 165-pound match to go on and win 11-1 for his 20th win of the year.

Brett Roberts held off Tyler Puls in a hard-fought match at 174 pounds to keep Simpson within striking distance at 21-19 heading into the final bout of the night.

Senior Casey Paprocki, who hasn't seen any action over the last few weeks, was back out on the mat for the Beavers at 184 pounds. He took a 1-0 lead early in the second period with an escape 30 seconds in and kept that lead heading to the third. He was able to pick up a pair of nearfall points midway through the period for a 3-0 lead before surrendering a reversal seconds which made it a 3-2 score.

Paprocki was then let loose to make it a 4-2 score with a minute left before being taken down to even things up at 4-4. He was able to get away with 30 seconds to go, and held on for the final 15 seconds in a scramble situation to earn the 5-4 win and give the Beavers the five-point victory.

It's the third straight win over the Storm for BVU, and each win came down to the final match.

Buena Vista improves to 1-4 overall (1-2 IIAC) and will look to add to that conference win total win it hosts three other teams in half of the IIAC Duals this Saturday inside of the Lamberti Rec Center. The Beavers will begin their day against #28 Dubuque at 9:00am before taking on top-ranked Wartburg College at 10:30am. The day concludes with a dual against Central College at 12:00pm.
