Bucknell opened the day with a 22-19 victory over Brown with back-to-back pins by Lyster and Stolfi at 197 and 285 erasing a 19-10 deficit. The Bison then trailed 18-12 in the nightcap against Clarion, but decisions by Rory Bonner and Lyster evened the score and then Stolfi recorded his 15th pin of the season to clinch the six-point victory for Bucknell (5-6, 2-0 EIWA).
Clarion (6-10) and Brown also wrestled in between the two Bucknell matches and the Golden Eagles posted a 24-16 win against the Bears.
The Bison had 10 individual victories on Saturday and five of them were by pin. Petrov added another bonus-point win with a major decision to open the day against Brown.
Despite Petrov’s early victory, the Bison trailed Brown 19-10 with just two bouts to go. After a scoreless first period, Lyster scored five quick points on a reversal and a near fall midway through the second period. He followed immediately with a pin, his third of the season. Stolfi then took to the mat knowing a decision would tie the score, but he pinned Ryder Cavey in 2:34 after building a 4-1 advantage.
Connor Lapresi and Barrick also posted wins by decision against Brown, which fell to 0-5, 0-4 EIWA.
A comeback by the heavier weights was again needed in the nightcap as the Bison won four of the final bouts. They nearly won all five as 174-pounder Joey Krulock battled back from a 5-0 second-period deficit to force overtime against Ryan Darch, but Darch recorded a takedown in the first 20 seconds of the overtime period to give the Golden Eagles an 18-12 advantage.
Rory Bonner got the comeback started for Bucknell as he won the 184-pound bout by a 6-1 score. He held a 2-1 lead at the end of the second period, but outscored Dustin Conti 4-0 over the final two minutes of wrestling.
Lyster then captured his 13th win of the season with an easy 7-0 decision over Daniel Sutherland after a scoreless first period. Stolfi then followed with a second-period pin of Even Daley after building a 9-0 lead. It was Stolfi’s 15th pin in his 19 victories this season. He ranks second in the nation in wins by fall and is now tied for fourth on the program’s single-season pins list and seventh on the career ledger (24).
Bucknell, which has won three matches in a row for the first time since February 2011, will continue its weekend homestand Sunday with a 2 p.m. match against EIWA foe Penn. The match will air live and free of charge on Bison Vision on the Patriot League Network.
