    Brown sweeps past Columbia, Hofstra

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Five different Bears earned two wins on the day as Brown University wrestling rallied past Columbia University, 19-18, before besting Hofstra University, 24-12, in a pair of EIWA duals at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday.

    As part of the team's Alumni & Family Weekend, the Bears (6-6, 4-5 EIWA, 1-3 Ivy) came back from an 18-13 deficit to upend the Lions (7-5, 3-5 EIWA, 1-3 Ivy) prior to topping the Pride (6-12, 2-6 EIWA) to close the day.

    On Senior Day, Brown's seniors totaled eight wins, including two wins apiece for seniors Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), and Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.). Juniors Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) and Theo Powers (Mexico, N.Y.) each notched two wins as well.

    Viruet posted his team-best fifth pin of the year against Hofstra and improved to 26-5 overall, 11-1 in duals, and 9-0 in EIWA duals. LaFragola bettered his season mark to 19-7, 10-2 in duals, Butterbrodt notched his third major decision of the year against Columbia and improved to 9-0 in duals, and Keeley increased his win total to 16 on the season.

    As part of Brown's Senior Day festivities, the Bears honored eight members of the Class of 2019 prior to the Columbia dual – Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.), Andrew LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.), Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.), CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), Brendan O'Connor (Monroe, Michigan), Travis Vasquez (Fair Lawn, N.J.), Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), and Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.).

    Next, Brown closes its dual season next weekend at Harvard on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 6:00 p.m. (ESPN+) and at home vs. Sacred Heart on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 1:00 p.m. (ESPN+).

    Dual 1: Brown 19, Columbia 18

    Senior Ian Butterbrodt opened the match with a major decision, and seniors CJ LaFragola and Tucker Ziegler won back-to-back bouts to close the match to rally Brown past Columbia, 19-18, on Saturday morning.

    In the team's final home Ivy League dual meet of the year, the Bears came back from deficits of 12-10 and 18-13 in the second half of the dual to pick up their first Ivy victory of the season.

    Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) notched his third major decision of the year and moved to 8-0 in duals while LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), Ziegler (Myersville, Md.), senior Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.), and juniors Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) and Theo Powers (Mexico, N.Y.) all won by decision.

    Opening the dual at 285 pounds, Butterbrodt captured a 10-0 victory over Danny Conley. He took a 7-0 lead at the end of the second period behind a four-point near fall before closing out the shutout.

    Keeley gave Brown a 7-0 lead in the team score behind an 8-6 win over Joe Manchio at 125 pounds. Keeley led 4-3 at the end of the second period and outscored Manchio 4-3 in the final frame.

    After Columbia pulled within 7-6, Powers extended Brown's edge to 10-6 in the team score behind a 9-3 win over Danny Fongaro at 141 pounds. Powers led 2-0 at the end of the first and 5-2 at the end of the second on his way to the win.

    With the Bears trailing 12-10 in the team score, Viruet – ranked No. 18 at 165 pounds – notched a 6-1 win over Laurence Kosoy at 165 pounds to push Brown ahead 13-12. He led 3-0 entering the third frame.

    After Columbia pulled back ahead 18-13, the Bears responded with back-to-back decisions to take the 19-18 win.

    LaFragola started the comeback with a 3-1 sudden-victory win over Brian Bonino at 184 pounds. With the two wrestlers tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation, LaFragola tallied a takedown 30 seconds into the overtime period.

    Ziegler secured the win with a 7-3 victory over Sam Wustefeld at 197 pounds. With the score tied 3-3 in the second period, Ziegler scored a takedown to bring a 5-3 edge into the third period where he added an escape and riding time point.

    Dual 2: Brown 24, Hofstra 12

    Senior Jon Viruet registered his team-high fifth fall of the year – and his fourth fall in dual meet competition – as Brown topped Hofstra, 24-12, on Saturday afternoon in its second EIWA dual of the day.

    The Bears won six of the dual's 10 bouts, including a 3-for-4 streak from 157 to 184 that allowed Brown to extend its lead over the Pride from 12-6 to 24-9.

    Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) pushed his season record to 26-5, including 11-1 in duals and 9-0 in EIWA duals while senior CJ LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) improved to 19-7 overall and 10-2 in duals. Seniors Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) and Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) and juniors Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) and Theo Powers (Mexico, N.Y.) all added wins.

    Starting the dual at 285 pounds, Butterbrodt earned a 2-0 win over Omar Haddad, notching his second shutout of the year.

    Keeley followed with a 7-6 win over Dylan Ryder at 125 pounds. Trailing 6-4 entering the third period, Keeley notched an escape and a takedown to pull out the victory and bring the team score to 6-0.

    At 157 pounds, LaBrie earned a 6-1 win over Ryan Burkert. LaBrie led 2-1 through two periods and outscored Burkert 4-0 in the final frame to make the team score 15-6 in favor of Brown.

    Viruet notched his fall in 1:54 over Corey Langner at 165 pounds, putting Brown ahead 21-6 in the team score.

    LaFragola gained his second win of the day with a 10-4 victory over Trey Rogers at 184 pounds. LaFragola led 4-1 at the end of one and 7-2 through two periods en route to the win.
