Concluding their three-match trip to the state of North Carolina and competing in two of the most-recognizable venues in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Bears (2-1) won six of 10 bouts to upend the Blue Devils (2-1) and took three bouts in the setback to the nationally ranked Wolfpack (10-2).
"We had a great win over Duke and competed really hard against a very good NC State program," Brown head coach Todd Beckerman said. "Today was a great opportunity to compete against opponents - and in arenas - that will help prepare us for EIWAs and NCAAs. Overall, we had a really productive trip to North Carolina and are looking forward to hosting our first home duals next weekend."
LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), senior heavyweight Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.), and junior 125-pounder Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) all went 3-0 on the weekend with LaFragola notching three major decisions. As a team the Bears concluded their trip 2-1, including a 39-3 win over Davidson on Friday, in their first dual meets of the season.
Next, Brown hosts Army West Point in its home dual opener on Thursday, Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. (ESPN+) before closing the weekend with home duals on Saturday, Jan. 19 against Franklin & Marshall at 11:00 a.m. (ESPN+) and Bucknell at 7:00 p.m. (ESPN+).
Dual 1: No. 12 NC State 29, Brown 10
RALEIGH, N.C. - Seniors Ian Butterbrodt and CJ LaFragola and junior Trey Keeley all earned victories, but Brown fell to No. 12 NC State, 29-10, on Saturday afternoon at PNC Arena.
The Bears won the first two bouts of the day to take a 6-0 lead in the team score before the host Wolfpack - ranked No. 12 in the nation according to Intermat's dual meet rankings - claimed the dual's next six bouts.
Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.), LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.), and Keeley (Washington, Ill.) all improved to 2-0 on the weekend after winning at Davidson on Friday.
Opening the match at 285 pounds, Butterbrodt gave the Bears a 3-0 lead in the team score with a 4-0 decision over Colin Lawler. After two scoreless periods, Butterbrodt notched an escape, a takedown, and a point for riding time in the third frame to gain the shutout.
Keeley followed with an 8-4 decision over Zurich Storm at 125 pounds, extending the Bears' team edge to 6-0. He pulled out to a 6-2 lead at the end of the first period behind three takedowns before adding a pair of escapes.
LaFragola registered Brown's third win of the dual, topping Roderick Davis, 14-5, at 184 pounds. He posted three takedowns between the first and second stanzas, taking a 6-3 lead. In the third period, he notched three takedowns, an escape, and a point for riding time.
Senior Christian LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) battled No. 4 Hayden Hidlay in a 16-8 major decision setback at 157 pounds. LaBrie pulled within 13-8 in the third period with a pair of escapes and a takedown in the final frame.
Sophomore AJ Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) dropped a narrow 5-2 decision at 174 pounds to Daniel Bullard. Pedro came within 4-2 with an escape in the third period before Bullard held on for the win.
At 197 pounds, senior Tucker Ziegler (Myersville, Md.) tested No. 19 Malik McDonald, falling via a 5-4 decision. Ziegler gained a 4-3 lead with an escape early in the third period before McDonald notched a takedown late in the stanza.
The Bears and Wolfpack competed in PNC Arena as part of a doubleheader with NC State's No. 15 ranked men's basketball program, which won 86-80 over Pittsburgh prior to the wrestling dual meet. The match served as a homecoming for Brown assistant coach Darrius Little, a 2012 graduate of NC State and a native of Thomasville, N.C.

DURHAM, N.C. - Senior 157-pounder Christian LaBrie tallied a technical fall, senior 184-pounder CJ LaFragola registered a major decision, and Brown defeated Duke, 24-15, on Saturday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Competing in their third and final dual in the Tar Heel State, the Bears took six of the dual's 10 bouts and beat the Blue Devils in five of the nine match-ups that were contested.
LaBrie (Exeter, R.I.) posted his first technical of the year while LaFragola (Little Egg Harbor, N.J.) recorded his third major decision of the weekend and his fifth major of the year.
Seniors Jon Viruet (Springfield, Mass.) and Ian Butterbrodt (North Andover, Mass.) and junior Trey Keeley (Washington, Ill.) all won via decision at 165, 285, and 125 pounds respectively. Sophomore Hunter Kosco (Canal Fulton, Ohio) picked up a win via forfeit at 133 pounds.
Keeley opened the dual with a 10-5 win over Harrison Campbell at 125 pounds. Keeley took a 6-3 lead at the end of the first period and remained ahead 8-4 at the end of the second before closing out the victory.
After Duke pulled within 9-8 in the team score, LaBrie extended the Bears' edge to 14-8 with a 22-7 technical fall win over Brandon Leynaud at 157 pounds. LaBrie scored three takedowns and a 4-point near fall to go up 10-2 at the end of the first period. He pushed his edge to 16-4 at the end of the second before notching three more takedowns to earn the technical fall.
At 165 pounds, Viruet followed with an 8-2 win over Zach Finesilver, making the team score 17-8. He compiled one takedown apiece in the first and second periods and totaled four points in the final frame.
LaFragola gave the Bears a 21-12 team advantage with a 16-7 major decision over Kaden Russell at 184 pounds. LaFragola held an 8-4 edge through two periods and totaled three takedowns in the third period on his way to the major decision.
Butterbrodt closed the match with a 6-0 win over Araad Fisher at 285 pounds. After a scoreless first period, Butterbrodt recorded a 4-point near fall in the second and added two more points in the final frame.
Cameroon Indoor Stadium was available due in part to the fact that the Blue Devils' No. 1-ranked men's basketball program played at No. 13 Florida State, winning 80-78.
