Air Force's pins came from junior Cody Surratt at 174 lbs., and sophomores Jake Thompson at 184 lbs., and Kayne Hutchsion at heavyweight. Then the tech fall came courtesy of sophomore No. 14 Sidney Flores at 125 lbs.
The dual started at 165 lbs. and Cal Poly notched the first win as their nationally ranked wrestler held on for a tight 3-0 decision. Then AF brought the fire power at the next two weight classes, as Surratt and Thompson went back-to-back with first period falls to blow ahead, 12-3.For Surratt it was pin number 13 on the season, while it was Thompson's sixth.
Cal Poly tightened the team score at 197 as No. 12 Tom Lane got a tech fall to make it 12-8 into the heavyweight bout. There, AF got back to its pinning ways, as Hutchison secured his eighth fall of the season, also in the first period, to put AF back up by 10, 18-8. Then Flores followed with a tech fall at 125 lbs., his fourth of the season, to make it a 23-8 team score with four matches to go.
AF then went back-to-back with hard fought, one point decision wins from sophomore Jared Van Vleet and junior Lenny Petersen to put the dual score on ice, 29-8. Petersen's match was a reversal fest, as there were five combined between the two. In the end, the difference was a stall call and Petersen's riding time for the 9-8 decision. Cal Poly went on to win the final two bouts, both by decision, to result in the 29-14 final.
The Falcons will return to the mats next weekend for the final two road duals of the season, first at Oklahoma, Friday, Feb. 14, followed by a trip to North Dakota State, Sunday, Feb. 16.
