Gibbs comes directly from University of Buffalo, where he was an assistant on the Bulls' staff for eight years. As recruiting coordinator, he was instrumental in Buffalo's rise to a perennial Top 25 program. He received the university's "Stars Award" for outstanding achievement as a recruiter and coach and signed numerous Top 100 recruits.
"Sean's eight years of experience at Buffalo will be a huge help to us," Popolizio said. "He is extremely excited to get back into coaching. Sean will be focussing mainly on our upper weights and he'll also be running a lot of morning workouts and preseason workouts."
Gibbs was a captain, team MVP and two-time NCAA qualifier at University of Pittsburgh, where he won 93 career matches. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 1993.
In addition to his experience at Buffalo, Gibbs served as head coach for the NWCA/USA Wrestling All-American Tour in 2001. That team of collegiate All-Americans competed internationally in Bulgaria and France. He also served as head coach of the New York Super Six - the largest freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling club in Western New York.
Gibbs was an Espoir All-American in 1990 and is a member of the Stark County (Ohio) Wrestling Hall of Fame.
