Four of the night’s 10 bouts ended in bonus points for the Cowboys.
“It was good to get back on the winning side,” coach John Smith said. “I liked Morrison’s and Perry’s matches. They wrestled two of the better kids on that team, and both picked up major decisions. Those are the things that we hope to more and more of.”
Sophomore Eddie Klimara kicked it off for the Pokes, defeating Cory Stainbrook, 7-2. It was Klimara’s ninth win of the season.
No. 4 Jon Morrison put the first of several bonus points on the board for the Cowboys with his 13-4 major decision over Nathan Pennesi at 133 pounds.
The Pokes suffered a loss at 141 pounds, when Anthony Collica gave up back points and a win to Colin Johnston in a bout that ended 8-4.
Josh Kindig, the nation’s No. 7 149-pounder, redeemed the loss with a 6-2 decision over Mountaineer Mike Morales.
No. 2 Alex Dieringer picked up his eighth fall of the season with his pin over Brutus Scheffel in 4:27.
Tyler Caldwell, ranked No. 5, earned a decision over Ross Renzi, 6-1, at 165 pounds. He was followed by a pair of major decisions from No. 2 Chris Perry and No. 18 Nolan Boyd at 174 pounds and 184 pounds, respectively.
Darnell Bortz stepped in for the Cowboys at 197 pounds. He kept the match close, but Leo Trindade earned a riding time point to hand Bortz a 8-6 loss.
No. 16 Austin Marsden closed out the dual for the Pokes at heavyweight, shutting out AJ Vizcarrondo, 4-0.
The Pokes will be back at it on Sunday when they take on the No. 13 Pittsburgh Panthers in Pittsburgh, Pa., at 1 p.m. CT.
