Oklahoma State dominates at OCU Open

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- Competing unattached, members of the Oklahoma State wrestling team dominated at the Oklahoma City Open on Sunday, as Cowboy wrestlers won championships at nine of a possible 10 weight classes. Leading the way were redshirt freshman 133-pounder Jordan Oliver and sophomore 197-pounder Alan Gelogaev, who both pinned everyone they faced on the way to their respective weight class championships.

Also claiming titles Sunday were 125-pounder Chris Notte, 141-pounder Jamal Parks, 149-pounder Albert White, 157-pounder Neil Erisman, 165-pounder Alex Meade, 174-pounder Mike Benefiel and 184-pounder Clayton Foster.

Team scores were not kept at the event.

The only weight class where an OSU wrestler did not emerge as the champion was at heavyweight, where senior two-time All-American Jared Rosholt placed second after getting upset by Oklahoma's Nathan Fernandez in the title bout by a 9-7 decision.

Cowboy teammates met in the championship bouts at 149 pounds and at 174 pounds. At 149, newcomer Albert White handed redshirt freshman Jake Peck a 5-2 defeat for the title and at 174, it was Benefiel picking up a narrow 3-2 win over 2009 NCAA qualifier Chris McNeil.

"I was pleased overall with our start as a group," Coach John Smith said. "This tournament gave us an opportunity to take a look at ourselves and it gives us a better idea of where we are than ranking matches would have. It was good to see Jordan and Z getting pins all the way through, as well as Jamal Parks."

The Cowboys officially open the season when they participate at the University of Central Missouri Open next Sunday.
