"You like the outcome of the score, but there were several matches throughout the night that you just do not want to see at this time of the year," head coach John Smith said. "I give OU credit. They are a competitive team that wrestles hard and well. There were four or five guys who really grinded through their matches, and because of them we got bonus points. Those really made the difference in the lopsided score and those are the things you like to see."
Bonus points at 141, 149, 165 and 184 pounds lifted the Pokes (9-2; 6-0 Big 12) over the Sooners after suffering losses at 125 and 133 pounds.
No. 1 Dean Heil cut the Sooners' lead to 8-5 after a technical fall at the end of regulation, putting up 16 points against Noah Teaney at 141 pounds.
"They way you have to look at it is that good guys don't let stuff like [being down 8-0] bother them," Heil said. "As an individual, you have to go out and get the job done whether you've lost two or you've lost nine in a row and you're that last match. No matter what, you have to set yourself apart and go perform the way you want to perform and down two matches, 8-0, I went out there and did what I wanted to do and helped the team out in the long run."
At 149 pounds, Anthony Collica defeated Davion Jeffries with a dominant 16-6 decision that included five takedowns.
More bonus points came at 165, as expected. Two-time NCAA champion Alex Dieringer defeated 12th-ranked Clark Glass in an exciting 16-3 major decision. Dieringer improves to 69 wins in his unbeaten streak.
Nolan Boyd gave the Cowboys the final bonus points of the night at 184 pounds to remedy an unexpected loss at 174 pounds. Boyd took on Andrew Dixon and earned three takedowns en route to a 15-2 win.
Sixth-ranked Joe Smith made his Bedlam debut, facing Shayne Tucker at 157 pounds. The Cowboy scored just two points in the first period but kicked it up in the second and third periods, collectively picking up nine more points.
"It was really fun. The student section and the crowd were awesome," Smith said. "I don't think we've had a crowd like this in a long time and I was really anxious to get out here and wrestle. It shell-shocked me when I got out here a little bit and felt it in my arms and legs a bit. I'm still getting used to the one-hour weigh-in, but I think come nationals we'll all come around."
At 197 pounds, Preston Weigel grinded out a tough 4-3 match against Brad Johnson to seal the dual win. The bout was tied 3-3 heading into the final period with the Sooner on bottom. A solid third-period ride gave Weigel riding time advantage and the win.
"That's just going to help me succeed in future by getting these wins," Weigel said. "That's two wins back-to-back here and it's a good start, but I'm not satisfied with just this. I've got a lot more work to do."
Heavyweight Austin Marsden closed out the dual with his 19th win of the season. Marsden, ranked No. 5, defeated No. 16 Ross Larson in a close 2-1 match.
The Cowboys will travel to Ithaca, N.Y., on Sunday to wrestle No. 15 Cornell at 12 p.m. CT.
