Oklahoma shocks ASU to place third at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Oklahoma wrestling team upset No. 9/9/16/16 (Flo/Trackwrestling/InterMat/NWCA) Arizona State 21-19 Saturday to take third at the Virginia Duals.

On day two, OU defeated Old Dominion 27-14 in the consolation semifinal. That win set the Sooners up for a rematch with Arizona State. OU came back from an 11-point deficit, winning the last three bouts of the night to secure the victory.

“I am proud of our team today. Beating the No. 16 team is a good start to where we eventually want to be,” said head coach Lou Rosselli. “Every guy gave their maximum effort and that is all I have ever asked of them.”

Anthony Mantanona, Anthony Madrigal, Davion Jeffries and Kayne MacCallum all grabbed wins for the Sooners. Mantanona led the charge with an upset win, pinning No. 20 Seldon Wright of ODU in 1:44. The win by fall was Mantanona's third pin in his last five matches, bringing his total to four this season. He ties Dom Demas for the most pins by a Sooner this year.

Anthony Madrigal (133) defeated ODU's Killian Cardinale 12-10. Madrigal held a 9-3 lead with a minute left in the third before Cardinale rallied to come within one point. Madrigal was taken down with under 20 seconds to cut his lead to 11-10, but the freshman earned a point for riding time to close out a 12-10 decision.

Davion Jeffries won a thriller in the 149 bout. The senior was tied with ODU's Kevin Budock at 3-all late in the third, but Jeffries rallied, using an escape to take the lead and a takedown with 10 seconds on the clock to secure a 6-3 victory.

At 184, OU's Kayne MacCallum topped Dean Drugac 8-2. MacCallum had two takedowns in the first period, nabbing his first one just 14 seconds into the match. The grad transfer used an escape and another takedown in the second to push his lead to 7-2, then earned a point for riding time.

The Sooners added 12 points by virtue of forfeits by Old Dominion at 157 and 197.

    Oklahoma 21, Arizona State 19

The Sooners rallied in the final three bouts of the night to capture a win over Arizona State. OU trailed 20-9 going into the 184 bout, but MacCallum began the Sooners' comeback by pinning Arizona State's Jacen Petersen in 5:19 in the 184 bout.

At 197, Woodley notched a 5-2 victory over Austyn Harris. After a scoreless first period, Woodley got on the board first with a takedown to start the second before Harris tied the bout at 2-all. Woodley escaped to open the third, then got a takedown to seal his win.

With the Sooners trailing 20-18, heavyweight Jake Boyd took the mat against Arizona State's Brady Daniel. The bout went scoreless through one period before Boyd got on the board with an escape, then was awarded a penalty point for a 2-0 lead. Daniel got an escape in the third to trim Boyd's lead to 2-1, but the Sooner answered with a takedown to win it 4-1.

Earlier in the match, Madrigal got his second win of the day at 133 against Josiah Kline. The bout was scoreless after the first period before each wrestler got an escape in the second to tie it at 1-all. Madrigal had accumulated 1:34 of riding time headed into the third period and rode Kline out to win it 2-1.

No. 7 Demas (141) avenged a loss in his first match of the tournament with a 7-4 decision against the Sundevils' Cory Crooks. Demas scored back-to-back takedowns in the first before being awarded a penalty point to take a 5-2 lead into the second. After a scoreless second period, Demas got an escape in the third and added a point for riding time to take the bout.

At 149, Jeffries won a thriller, downing ASU's Joshua Maruca 6-4. Jeffries trailed 4-3 late in the final period, but had earned 1:43 in riding time. Jeffries got a takedown with just seven seconds on the clock to win it.
