Oklahoma escapes with 20-18 win at Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The No. 6 Oklahoma wrestling team (8-1 overall, 2-0 Big 12) escaped with a 20-18 win over No. 24 Oregon State (7-5 overall, 2-0 Pac-12) Saturday afternoon inside Gill Coliseum.

Entering the final match at 197 pounds between No. 3 Travis Rutt and No. 13 Taylor Meeks, the Sooners trailed 18-17. Rutt secured a 7-3 decision over the junior to give OU the victory.

"Oregon State is a very good team. They had a good plan against us and are very well coached," OU head coach Mark Cody said. "Any time you can give up two pins against a team of that caliber and still come up with a win, it's fortunate. As a team we still have a lot of work to do in preparing our guys for what's to come in the next couple of months."

The dual began with the heavyweight division, and the Sooners suffered losses in the first two matches and fell behind 9-0 before Cody Brewer added a 13-4 major decision of Drew Van Anrooy to cut into Oregon State’s lead.

No. 15 Nick Lester continued to decrease the deficit with a decision of redshirt freshman Joey Delgado, 5-3, at 141 pounds. Then, No. 2 Kendric Maple gave the Sooners their first lead at 10-9 after he topped No. 12 Scott Sakaguchi in the 149-pound bout by an 8-6 decision.

The Sooners also registered wins at 165 pounds and 174 pounds from redshirt freshman Clark Glass and No. 1 Andrew Howe, respectively. Glass defeated sophomore Toney Chay by decision, 5-2, while Howe added a 17-6 major decision of junior Joe Latham. With the win, Howe improved to a perfect 15-0 on the season.

Oregon State took the matches at 285 pounds, 125 pounds, 157 pounds and 184 pounds. No. 15 Amarveer Dhesi of Oregon State defeated OU’s No. 17 Ross Larson by a 6-2 decision in the night’s first match at heavyweight.

At 125 pounds, sophomore Joey Palmer caught freshman Sean Williams by a pin, giving the Beavers the early 9-0 lead. The dual start was Williams' first of his career as he took the place of the injured Jarrod Patterson.

Oregon State added another fall at 157 pounds as No. 11 RJ Pena took down No. 19 Justin DeAngelis in 1:53. Senior Austin Morehead downed OU freshman Danny Chaid by an 9-2 decision at 184 pounds.

The Sooners return to the mat at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30, as they face No. 7 Missouri in their final home dual of the season. Seven members of OU’s senior class will be recognized prior to the match.
