Oklahoma defeats Edinboro in Rosselli's homecoming

EDINBORO, Pa. -- The Oklahoma wrestling team downed Edinboro 31-6 Saturday in head coach Lou Rosselli's return to his alma mater.

OU (6-6) earned four bonus-point victories in eight matches to seal the win in its final non-conference contest of the season. With the win over Edinboro, OU finishes 2018-19 with six victories in non-conference action.

"It was a nice win today," said Rosselli, who was a two-time All-American at Edinboro. "I have a lot of friends that came out to watch the match and I'm proud of the way our kids performed."

In the first bout of the night, Christian Moody downed Edinboro's Arick Shankles 6-0 at 125 pounds. Moody got a takedown in the first for a 2-0 advantage and escaped to start the second to go up 3-0. The Sooner added another takedown in the second, then rode Shankles out for a 5-0 lead and was awarded a point for riding time after accumulating over five minutes.

At 133, Anthony Madrigal earned a tech fall victory over Richie Gomez, winning 18-0 in 2:01. The freshman tallied four four-point nearfalls and a takedown for the win. Madrigal has now recorded two tech-fall wins on the year, tying Dom Demas and Davion Jeffries for the most on the team.

No. 16 Demas grabbed a 10-1 major decision win over Jackie Gold. In the first period, the Sooner got a takedown and a two-point near fall for a 4-0 lead. Gold escaped to start the second, but Demas closed the period out with a takedown to go up 6-1. Demas started the final period on bottom and escaped, then added a takedown with a minute left in the bout. The redshirt freshman earned a point for riding time with 2:44 in his favor.

Jeffries downed Tyler Vath 6-2 in the 149 bout. Vath got on the board first with a takedown, but Jeffries answered with a reversal to tie it at 2-all then got a two-point nearfall for a 4-2 lead. The Sooner started the second on bottom and got an escape to take a 5-2 advantage into the third. Jeffries rode Vath out for an extra point.

At 157, Justin Thomas won a major decision against Edinboro's Tim Suter 11-1. A productive first period saw Thomas a takedown and a four-point nearfall for a 6-0 lead. In the second, Suter escaped but Thomas answered with a takedown for an 8-1 advantage heading into the last period. The Sooner got another takedown with a minute left in the bout and banked five minutes of riding time to secure the point.

Hayden Hansen (165) got his first pin of the season when he defeated Edinboro's Fritz Hoehn by fall in 3:55.

In the 184 bout, Kayne MacCallum defeated Zach Ancewicz 2-0. After a scoreless first period, MacCallum got an escape in the second for a 1-0 lead. The Sooner was awarded a point for riding time to secure the win.
