Schmitt earns Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors

MADISON, Wis. -- Redshirt sophomore Cole Schmitt is Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of Jan. 10, the league announced Tuesday. The honor is Schmitt’s first weekly conference honor of his career.

To earn the award, the New Glarus, Wis., native secured four wins at 149 lbs. to help the Badgers place third at the NWCA National Duals last weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The No. 10 wrestler at 149 lbs. in the country at the time, Schmitt captured a 4-3 decision over American’s No. 8 Ganbayar Sanjaa and defeated No. 9 Brian Stephens (Virginia Tech), 6-5.

In addition, Schmitt opened the tournament by pinning South Dakota State’s James Hamilton at 5:31 to help Wisconsin defeat the Jackrabbits, 42-3. To wrap up the weekend, he shut out Minnesota’s Daniel Zilverberg, 7-0, to extend his overall record to 15-4 (excluding open tournaments). After sweeping his competition last weekend, Schmitt is now ranked No. 7 at 149 lbs.

Schmitt is the second Badger to receive the accolade this season. Junior Travis Rutt (184 lbs.) was named the Big Ten Conference Wrestler of the Week for Nov. 23, 2010 after posting four-straight wins, including three over ranked opponents from Nov. 19-21.

Wisconsin joins Illinois and Michigan as the only three teams in the conference thus far to have two athletes win the award for the 2010-11 season.

Schmitt and the rest of the Wisconsin wrestling team return to the mat Sunday as they host Illinois at 1 p.m. at the UW Field House.
