Purdue wins fourth straight, thumps Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Purdue's upper weights put big points on the board in a 29-6 win over Maryland in the XFINITY Center Pavilion on Friday. Eight of the 10 weights went the Boilermakers' way with three bouts resulting in bonus points. For the first time since 2013, Purdue has won three straight Big Ten Conference duals, moving to 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the league. Maryland dropped to 2-10 and 0-5 in the Big Ten.

Jacob Morrissey and Tanner Lynde were a one-two punch with technical falls at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively. Morrissey needed just 4:26 to dispose of Sam Rowell, 15-0, after scoring a dozen points in the second period. The Oconto Falls, Wisconsin, native had a first period takedown and received a point courtesy of Rowell being called for stalling twice in the stanza. Morrissey's 60th career match resulted in career win No. 40 and the fourth tech fall of his redshirt junior campaign.

Lynde didn't need much more time to roll to an 18-2 win over Idris White, doing so in 4:40. The redshirt senior snapped a three-match losing skid with a strong outing. Lynde responded to a quick White takedown by reversing the Terrapin and tilting him for a four count on two occasions, building an 11-2 lead through the opening period. An escape to start the second period followed with an immediate takedown and a four-point nearfall to bring the match to an end. The tech fall is the fourth of the season for Lynde and the 18 points are the most he has scored in a match during his career.

Redshirt freshman Nate Limmex got back on track with a 13-2 major decision against Maryland's Adam Whitesell. The 149-pounder, who wrestled in his second match since suffering an injury in Las Vegas in early December, scored a takedown in each period and earned a four-point nearfall early in the match.

Ben Thornton (22-8) extended his dual match winning streak to four straight with 9-3 decision over Michael Beck in the opening bout. A 4-0 decision from Kyle Ayersman at 141 pounds and a 6-4 sudden victory by Alex Griffin at 157 gave the Boilermakers a 16-3 advantage heading into the intermission.

Out of the break, 165-pounder Dylan Lydy notched his first Big Ten victory, a 3-2 decision of Josh Ugalde. A hard-fought 6-3 showing from Christian Brunner (197) against David-Brian Whisler followed the back-to-back tech falls.

Purdue continues its East Coast trip at No. 11 Rutgers on Sunday. Competition from the Rutgers Athletic Center is set for a noon ET start. The Scarlet Knights cruised to a 38-3 win over Oregon State on Friday.
