    Purdue blanks SIU Edwardsville

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Pins from Brandon Nelsen, Patrick Kissel and Braden Atwood, and a come-from-behind win by Tyler Kral to clinch the shutout, highlighted a 39-0 win over SIU Edwardsville (2-6, 0-0 SoCon) for Purdue wrestling Saturday in Holloway Gymnasium. The Boilermakers notched their third home dual victory of the season while improving to 5-2, 0-0 B1G.

Purdue outscored the Cougars 64-27 while holding an 18-3 takedown advantage as the Old Gold & Black put 30-plus points on the board for a third time this season. The Boilermakers have taken the last eight duals in the all-time series against SIU Edwardsville and have now shut the Cougars out three times.

"Being dominant, that is the thing in our mind," Purdue head wrestling coach Tony Erslandsaid. "Dominance is what we are after when we are talking about being in tight matches and building our lead. The pin is the ultimate form of dominance in our sport. We love to see guys getting falls for us, it helps the team out. Being dominant like that goes a long way with your mentality."

The Boilermakers received decisions from Aaron Assad (125), Danny Sabatello (133) and No. 20 Nick Lawrence (141) to start the dual. Sabatello, the reigning B1G Wrestler of the Week, pushed his winning streak to 12 straight while winning his ninth consecutive dual match dating back to Feb. 7, 2014, with a 10-3 decision of Patrick Myers. The now 13-1 redshirt junior took Myers down once in each period and added a two-point nearfall in the third period.

Nelsen recorded his third first-period fall of the season by sticking Karsten Van Velsor in 2:22. The 149-pounder was on the attack from the first whistle, putting on an offensive clinic with four takedowns and received a five count before getting Van Velsor's shoulders on the mat. The pin is Nelsen's sixth of his redshirt senior campaign as he moved into a tie for fifth on Purdue's career falls list with 29. Nelsen, who hails from Indianapolis, Ind., moved to 11-2 and is 2-0 in duals for the Old Gold & Black.

Decisions followed from Doug Welch (157), Pat Robinson (165) and Chad Welch (174) to build Purdue's lead to 24-0 before registering back-to-back pins at 184 and 197 pounds. A wild series in the first period saw SIU Edwardsville's Derek Nagel take Kissel down, only to be reversed, and then Kissel was reversed as the first three minutes ended. With choice, Kissel took bottom in the second and reversed Nagel again. The Cougar took an 8-7 lead with an escape to start the third. Kissel struck with a takedown and locked in with a cradle for the fall at 5:26.

Kissel, a redshirt senior from Sheboygan, Wis., moved to 12-5 while getting his fourth pin of the season. It was also his second pin in as many home matches this year and the 12th of his career.

Nineteen seconds into the 197-pound match, eighth-ranked Atwood (9-1) took Matthew McClimens down and went to work looking for the fall. A two-point nearfall was awarded and Atwood nearly had McClimens stuck. The Cougar avoided it, but it wasn't long before Atwood was back at and got the fourth fall of his redshirt senior season. He has pinned 28 opponents during his career and is right on the heels of Nelsen at No. 7 on the career falls list.

Kral secured the shutout for Purdue with a 4-3 decision over Chris Johnson in the final bout at 285 pounds. Kral had choice after a scoreless first period, to which he got on the board with an escape. Johnson evened it at 1-1 with an escape of his own after starting the third period from bottom. The Cougar took a 3-1 lead on a takedown as the two went out of bounds with 32 seconds remaining. Kral made it 3-2 with an escape and got the takedown he needed as the horn sounded. The win is the seventh of the season for the redshirt sophomore.

"The way that Tyler did it, being down and having to get out and go right back in and attack, and secure the win, that was big for the team," Ersland said. "It gets everyone excited and pumped up. Definitely a momentum builder as we move forward."

Up next for the Boilermaker grapplers is a trip to Chattanooga, Tenn., to face the 19th-ranked Mocs on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. ET. The following night they will be in action at Kell High School in Marietta, Ga., with a 7 p.m. ET dual against North Carolina. Live results from both duals will be available via TrackWrestling and @PurdueWrestling.
