The legend of ‘Gas Tank' Gary Traub grew larger. For the third time this season, Traub clasped victory in the final five seconds of regulation or in the case of Friday night, the second sudden victory period. ‘Gar – ee, Gar – ee, Gar – ee!' chants engulfed the Covelli Center once again.
Freshly-minted ‘black shirt,' Kaleb Romero, earned a top-20 win at 174 pounds. He smothered 19th-ranked Joe Grello with four takedowns and narrowly missed out on bonus points as a 9-2 winner.
Pletcher kicked off the evening by recording his sixth major decision of the season. He scored early and often in handing JoJo Aragona a 12-4 loss. Sasso matched the bonus points, posting a 16-7 major decision. He turned Gerard Angelo twice for a total of eight near-fall points.
Following a setback at 157 pounds, Smith and Romero reignited the Covelli Center party. They combined for nine takedowns and outscored their opposition 22-6. Romero has battled a top-20 foe in six consecutive matches, coming out on top four times.
Kollin Moore did what Kollin Moore does in the 197-pound bout. He outscored No. 17 Jordan Pagano, 20-9, with a whopping eight takedowns. Moore now sits at 16-0 with a bonus rate north of 80%. Can you say ‘Hodge Trophy contender?'
Then came the match of the night. Traub moved to 16-2 overall and cemented his standing as the fan favorite following another dramatic, heart-filled win.
