    Ohio State outlasts Virginia Tech

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Holding on to an 11-10 lead with four matches remaining, the No. 5 Ohio State wrestling team (2-0) won four consecutive bouts between 174 pounds and heavyweight to pull out a 23-10 victory at No. 12 Virginia Tech Friday night at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va.

Trailing only once following the opening match at 125 pounds, the Buckeyes held a narrow 8-7 advantage after the 149-pound bout before clinching their second dual win of the season on senior C.J. Magrum’s 7-4 decision over Derrick Borlie in the 197-pound matchup. A pair of takedowns in the third period lifted Magrum to victory. Tied 3-3 with 1:35 remaining, Magrum scored a crucial takedown, but Borlie answered with an escape for a 5-4 score. In the waning moments, Magrum recorded his second takedown of the match for the eventual victory.

Ohio State trailed Virginia Tech, 4-0, early on when senior 125-pounder Nikko Triggas dropped a 10-2 major decision to No. 9 Jarrod Garnett. However, sophomore Logan Stieber got the Buckeyes on the board when he recorded a 19-4 technical fall over Erik Spjut at 133 pounds. Stieber led Spjut, 5-1, after the first period and, 10-1, to start the third period and with four takedowns, plus riding time, amassed 19 points in his sixth win of the season.

In his 2012-13 dual meet debut, sophomore and 141-pounder Hunter Stieber secured an 8-5 decision vs. No. 11 Zach Neibert. Owning a slim 5-4 lead at the end of the second period, Stieber was able to escape Neibert’s clutch to increase his lead by two. Stieber then notched a takedown to secure the win despite an escape by Neibert with 30 seconds remaining.

With Ohio State leading Virginia Tech by just four points, sophomore Cam Tessari, who also was making his debut in the dual-meet season, lost a tough 5-3 decision to No. 18 Nick Brascetta at 149 pounds. Up next, redshirt sophomore Josh Demas edged Lex Ozias, 3-2, thanks to riding time at 157 pounds. Demas trailed Ozias, 2-1, with 40 seconds left in the third period, but recorded an escape to tie the score at 2 apiece.

The Hokies cut the Buckeyes’ lead to one (11-10) once again after freshman Mark Martin lost just his third match of the season, 7-1, to No. 4 Peter Yates at 165 pounds. It took an overtime and tiebreak for Nick Heflin to secure a 2-1 win vs. Austin Gabel in the 174-pound bout and a 14-10 lead for the Scarlet and Gray.

Heflin’s victory began a string of four consecutive wins for Ohio State. Freshman and 184-pounder Kenny Courts, the team leader in wins with 11, posted an 11-6 win vs. Nick Vetterlein and Magrum’s 7-4 victory followed.

Redshirt junior Peter Capone once again concluded the match, this time with a 6-3 win over No. 20 David Marone. After a scoreless tie entering the second period, Capone scored an escape to take a 1-0 lead, but Marone answered with an escape of his own to tie the score, 1-1, in the third period. Capone then scored a takedown, but was quickly reversed by Marone. However, Capone managed to escape and score a takedown for the victory.

Ohio State will continue its busy week and weekend when it hosts No. 18 Pittsburgh at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. John Arena in its season home opener.
