Nebraska improves to 7-2 with win over UNI

Lincoln, Neb. -- The 11th-ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers defeated the No. 14 Northern Iowa Panthers in front of a record Tumble N' Rumble crowd of 4,699 Saturday night at the Devaney Center. With the win, Nebraska is now undefeated in its last 13 duals against UNI (12-0-1).

The night started out on a high note for NU as No. 14 Zeke Moisey (125) came out of the gates furiously, earning an early takedown on Jay Schwarm to go up 2-0. A second period reversal gave him more than enough cushion as he rode out a 5-2 victory.

A true freshman from Olathe, Kan., Jevon Parrish got the start tonight at 133 pounds and nearly picked up his first dual victory, losing 8-6 in sudden victory to Jack Skudlarczyk. Parrish was 12-4 in open tournaments before burning his redshirt tonight.

UNI took the 141 and 149-pound bouts to go up 9-3 as Josh Alber and Max Thomsen earned decisions over Chad Red Jr. and Collin Purinton, respectively.

With his team facing a six-point deficit, senior Tyler Berger (157) stepped up and delivered a convincing 19-4 victory by tech. fall over Patrick Schoenfelder. With the win, Berger moved to 15-1 on the season with eight victories by bonus points.

With his team down 9-8, Isaiah White (165) came to the mat ready to face the fourth top 20-ranked wrestler in his past six matches. Once again, White came through for his team, grinding out a 2-1 decision over No. 12 Bryce Steiert. The match was tied 1-1 after three periods, but the junior from Chicago, Ill., had accumulated exactly 1:00 in riding time to take the win by one point.

UNI's No. 8 Taylor Lujan gave Nebraska's No. 9 Mikey Labriola (174) the third loss of his redshirt freshman season in a 10-5 decision. The win gave his team a 12-11 lead with three matches to go.

The 184-pound match turned out to be one of the best bouts of the dual, as it pitted Nebraska's Taylor Venz (No. 5 ranked 184 pound wrestler in the country) against No. 6 Drew Foster. Venz already defeated Foster in the Cliff Keen Invitational earlier this season and is 2-0 all-time against him.

Venz, a sophomore All-America honoree last year, came out attacking from the get-go and earned a takedown and a two-point nearfall just seven seconds into the match. The two exchanged blows for the remainder of the match, but Venz was able to hold off Foster once again, earning a crucial 8-6 decision. The win moved Venz to 12-3 on the season and put NU up 14-12.

The Huskers were able to keep that lead for good as Eric Schultz (197) won his 14th match of the season, taking a 6-3 decision over Tyrell Gordon to give NU a five-point cushion.

Heavyweight David Jensen stayed undefeated on the year (10-0) as he dominated Izaak Shedenhelm from start to finish, taking a 17-2 victory by tech. fall.

With the win, No. 11 Nebraska moves to 7-2 (1-1 B1G) on the season and No. 14 Northern Iowa drops to 2-3 (2-0 Big 12).
