    MSU places eight at Reno TOC, McClure wins title

    RENO, Nev. -- Michigan State wrestling took third place at the Reno Tournament of Champions today, finishing with 107. 5 team points and also placed eight individual wrestlers in the event. No. 11 Michael McClure led the Spartans with a first place finish at heavyweight and went 5-0 in the tournament.

    McClure opened the tournament with two shutout decisions, posting a 9-0 major decision over Brendan TerWee of Stanford and a 6-0 decision over Peter Anqiuano of Grand Canyon. The Holland, Mich., native then notched back-to-back decisions over two nationally ranked wrestlers in the top-10. McClure defeated No. 9 J.T. Felix of Boise State, 4-2 and followed that up with a 5-2 decision over No. 6 Chad Hanke of Oregon State. In the championship match, McClure pinned No. 16 Odie Delaney of The Citadel in 3:40.

    At 125 pounds, Brenan Lyon took home fourth place after falling to Mitchell Loftstead of Southern Oregon, 14-1. Lyon lost two Tyler Iwamara of Cal State in the semifinals before coming back through the consolation bracket to finish in fourth. Josh Heinzer also competed at 125 pounds and went 2-2 in the tournament.

    Sophomore Brandon Fifield took fourth place at 133 pounds and fell to Sam Speno of NC State, 3-0 in the third-place match. Fifield won his first two matches by fall and pinned Zach Zehner of Wyoming in 1:58 before eventually losing to Brian Owen of Boise State in the semifinals, 4-0.

    Dan Osterman place went 4-1 and placed second at 149 pounds. Osterman pinned Brutus Scheffel of West Virginia in 4:40 to advance to the finals but dropped a close 4-1 decision to No. 4 Jason Chamberlain of Boise State.

    Nick Proctor and Ryan Watts both placed at 165 pounds, Proctor finished in second place and Watts took fourth. Robert Nash also competed at 165 and went 3-2. Proctor squared off against Watts in the semifinals and used a 3-1 decision to advance. Proctor then lost to Nigel Jones of NC State, 13-4 in the finals.

    At 174 pounds, Jordan Wohlfert went 3-2 and fell to Scotty Bacon of Boise State in the consolation round, 5-2.

    John Rizqallah took home third place at 184 pounds and defeated Kody Reed of Montana State-Northern, 6-2, in the third-place match. Rizqallah lost to eventual champion No. 12 Jake Swartz of Boise State in the semifinals, 11-4.

    Luke Jones placed fifth at 197 pounds and Nick McDiarmid went 3-2 for the Spartans. Jones earned a fall over Josh Manu of Missouri Valley in 3:40 in the fifth-place match.

    The Spartans return to action following the holiday break on Friday, Jan. 4 and will take on Purdue at Jenison Field House at 7 p.m. The Spartans also host both Bucknell and Lindsey Wilson on Sunday, Jan. 6.
