Minnesota sweeps tri-meet at Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In its first conference tri-meet since 1996, the 14th-ranked Gopher wrestling team (2-1) defeated Maryland (0-3) and host Michigan State (1-1) on Saturday afternoon. Minnesota routed the Terrapins with a 48-0 win and defeated the No. 17 Spartans, 28-6, in the finale.

Eight of the 10 Gophers finished the day with two victories led by sophomore Patrick McKee. The 17th-ranked 125 pounder began the day with a major decision against Maryland's King Sandoval and then upset No. 2 Rayvon Foley of the Spartans with a 10-6 decision.

Top-ranked heavyweight Gable Steveson improved to 32-0 in his career in dual meets with a pin and technical fall. Steveson earned a 13-second fall against Maryland's Connor Bowes to tie for the second-fastest pin in school history, matching Mitch McKee (2017) and Jim Martinez (1981).

Another standout on the day was junior Jake Allar. Making just his second and third career starts, Allar began the day with a pin in 1:28 against the Terrapins' Dominic Solis at 174 pounds. He followed that with a 13-1 major decision against No. 15 Drew Hughes of the Spartans.

In its 48-0 win in the opener against the Terrapins, Minnesota secured its biggest winning margin against a conference foe since a 51-0 victory against Purdue on Feb. 10, 1979. The Gophers amassed three major decisions and four pins en route to the win.

Following McKee's major decision at 125, senior Boo Dryden earned the fall in 5:33 at 133 pounds. Redshirt freshman Marcos Polanco followed with his first career dual meet win by a 6-0 decision against Danny Bertoni at 141 pounds.

No. 6 Brayton Lee increased the Gopher lead to 25-0 with a pin of Lucas Cordio at 157 as time expired in the second period. True freshman Andrew Sparks followed up his upset at Nebraska a week ago with a 14-3 major decision against Jonathan Spadafora at 165 pounds.

Before Steveson's 13-second fall at heavyweight, No. 20 Owen Webster and Garrett Joles closed out the dual with a major decision and decision, respectively.

The Gophers kept the momentum going in the nightcap against the Spartans with seven straight wins to open the dual. After earning a win by medical forfeit against Maryland, No. 17 Michael Blockhus, a transfer from Northern Iowa, dominated Peyton Onamia in a 16-4 major decision at 149 pounds. Sparks improved to 3-0 in his rookie season with a come-from-behind 8-7 win against No. 19 Jake Tucker at 165 pounds. He trailed 6-1 in the second period before the rally.

The Golden Gophers will now return home to renew one of the great rivalries in college wrestling. Minnesota will host No. 1 Iowa at Maturi Pavilion on Friday night. The match is scheduled for 8 p.m. and will air live on Big Ten Network.
