Minnesota defeats Purdue, Rutgers in Big Ten tri-meet

PISCATAWAY, NJ -- The No. 12 Gopher wrestling team (4-2) defeated No. 18 Purdue, 32-4, and No. 17 Rutgers, 21-18, in a Big Ten tri-meet on Sunday in Piscataway, N.J. Minnesota earned its 12th straight win against the Boilermakers and improved to 5-0 all-time against the Scarlet Knights.

Five Gophers went 2-0 on the day including sophomore Patrick McKee and senior Owen Webster. Ranked ninth in the country at 125 pounds, McKee upset No. 6 Devin Schroder of Purdue by a score of 5-4. He followed that with a pin of No. 15 Nic Aguilar of Rutgers. At 184 pounds, Webster upset a pair of ranked opponents. He defeated No. 10 Max Lyon of the Boilermakers and No. 15 John Poznanski of the Scarlet Knights.

In the opening match against Purdue, the Gophers raced out to a 27-0 lead behind eight straight wins by decision. Sophomore Marcos Polanco upset No. 19 Parker Filius, 3-2, at 141 pounds. No. 7 Brayton Lee defeated No. 5 Kendall Coleman, 3-2, at 157 pounds. Top-ranked heavyweight Gable Steveson closed out the dual with a 24-8 technical fall over Jamarcus Grant.

In the nightcap against Rutgers, McKee gave Minnesota an early 6-0 lead with his fall, but the Scarlet Knights responded with three straight victories to take a 10-6 lead. After Lee's decision at 157, No. 15 Andrew Sparks gave the Gophers a 13-10 lead with a 13-3 major decision against Brett Donner at 165 pounds. The true freshman from California improved to 5-1 on the season.

Following an upset at 174 pounds by technical fall, Rutgers took a 15-13 lead heading into the final three matches. Webster's 6-4 upset of Poznanski at 184 pounds proved to be crucial as the Knights would regain the team lead following a win at 197 pounds.

That set it up for Steveson to clinch the team victory with his 23rd win in a row. He wasted little time in collecting his second technical fall of the day over Rutgers' Boone McDermott. Steveson improved to 6-0 on the year and 56-2 in his career.

Minnesota returns to the mat on Friday at 5 p.m. when it hosts No. 13 Illinois at Maturi Pavilion.
