The Iowa Hawkeyes have their new assistant coach and, as you might expect, it’s a familiar face. Jacob Warner will take over for the spot left vacant by former Hawkeye assistant Bobby Telford.
Warner was a four-time All-American at 197 lbs for Iowa competing between 2019-23. He also was named an NWCA First-Team All-American after the 2020 NCAA Tournament was canceled. Warner’s best NCAA finish was a finals appearance at the 2022 tournament. He was also seventh in 2019, fourth in 2021, and fifth in 2023. During his 2022 NCAA finals run, Warner defeated future Hawkeye national champion Stephen Buchanan in the semifinals.
In conference action, Warner was a three-time third-place finisher in the Big Ten and never finished lower than fifth. He also was a three-time NCAA #5 seed.
Warner came to Iowa City as the #7 overall recruit in the high school Class of 2017. In 2016, Warner earned a bronze medal at the Cadet World Championships in freestyle. Two years later, he was a member of the Junior World team.
He was also a starter on Iowa’s 2021 national championship squad.
