    Illinois dominant over Indiana in 39-3 victory

    BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Illinois was extremely impressive all afternoon, racking up points and dominating Indiana, 39-3. The convincing win over the Hoosiers was the Illini's largest ever margin of victory in Bloomington. In their first Big Ten dual of the season, the Fighting Illini racked up two falls, a technical fall, and four major decisions as they won bouts in nine of their ten matches with the Hoosiers.

    The afternoon begun with the heavyweights as sophomore Luke Luffman defeated Jacob Bullock by major decision after several takedowns to begin the dual. A huge takedown late in the third period gave the sophomore heavyweight an 11-3 advantage and putting the Illini on top, 4-0 to start the afternoon against the Hoosiers.

    Brock Hudkins earned an escape late in the second period to go up 1-0 on Justin Cardani at 125-pounds, but Cardani would start the third period on bottom and get an escape midway through the period to knot the score at 1. Late in the third period, Cardani finished a takedown with seconds left on the clock to go up 3-1 and win by decision, giving Illinois an early 7-0 lead.

    Lucas Byrd secured a major decision win over Caden Rooks in the 133-pound matchup after an impressive debut in the Illini starting lineup. Byrd notched several takedowns and pulled away from Rooks, winning 14-5.

    At 141-pounds, senior Dylan Duncan impressed in his first match of the 2021 season. The senior won by fall (6:18) over Paul Konrath, putting the Illini up 17-0.

    Senior Mike Carr gave the Illini another major decision victory, defeating Luke Baughman in the 149-pound weight class, 16-5. The senior who missed last season due to injury secured several takedowns en route to his first victory of the 2021 season.

    At 157-pounds, first-year starter Johnny Mologousis got off to a great start with a takedown and four-point near fall late in the first period to take a 6-0 lead into the second period. He would finish the match with a 10-0 major decision victory, giving the Illini a 25-0 lead.

    Danny Braunagel came out strong against Nick South at 165-pounds, ultimately pulling off the technical fall (6:48) and giving the Illini another five team points to go up 30-0 over the Hoosiers.

    Donnell Washington earned a quick four points with a takedown and near fall, going up 4-0 early over first-year starter Trey Sizemore in the 174-pound bout. Sizemore would gain control, but a reversal from Washington late in the second period would give him another two points. The Hoosiers would get on the board with three points, trailing Illinois, 30-3.

    Zac Braunagel recorded two early takedowns, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the 184-pound matchup halfway through the first period. After a pair of takedowns in the second period, Braunagel secured the second fall of the day for the Illini (6:02), increasing the lead to 36-3 over Indiana.

    With the final match of the afternoon at 197-pounds, Wroblewski capped off an incredible performance from the Illini with another win, defeating Nick Willhan by decision. The win would extend the Illini lead to 39-3, giving Illinois their largest margin of victory in Bloomington.
