One of the biggest names in the transfer portal made his next move public this afternoon as Anthony Echemendia committed to Nebraska. Echemendia will use his final year of eligibility competing for Mark Manning’s team.
Echemendia started his collegiate career at Ohio State and competed sparingly for the Buckeyes before transferring to Iowa State. In Ames, Echemendia earned All-American honors on two occasions. He was fifth in the country at 141 lbs in 2024 and sixth at the same weight class in 2026.
Last season, Echemendia posted a major decision victory in the Cyclones historic victory over rival Iowa. Shortly after that, he captured a title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Echemendia is a two-time Big 12 finalist. He won a conference title in 2024 and was second to the eventual national champion, Sergio Vega (Oklahoma State), in 2026. Vega was responsible for two of Echemendia’s four actual losses that year.
There’s a chance we could see Echemendia up at 149 lbs during the 2026-27 campaign. He was indicated that 141 lbs is a difficult cut. As of now, Nebraska has redshirt freshmen Jake Hockaday and Nikade Zinkin penciled in at 141 and 149, respectively.
Echemendia’s addition gives Nebraska six multi-time All-Americans in the lineup for 2026-27.
