    Augsburg wins UWEC Invitational

    EAU CLAIRE, Wis. -- Jared Massey (JR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS) dominated his weight class, earning Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament honors as the Augsburg College wrestling team won the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational on Saturday at the McPhee Physical Education Center.

    Massey opened with two pins in his first two matches, then scored two 16-0, technical-fall victories in the semifinals and finals to win the 197-pound weight class.

    The defending NCAA Division III national champion and top-ranked wrestler nationally in his weight class, Massey is now 21-0 on the season, with eight pins and two technical falls. In his two seasons at Augsburg, Massey is now 51-1.

    Augsburg, the top-ranked team in the latest Division III national rankings, won the tournament with 221 points, with No. 6-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse finishing second with 149.5 points. Division II Wisconsin-Parkside was third with 125 points and No. 9-ranked St. John's was fourth with 109.

    Augsburg wrestlers won five of the 10 weight classes, with 12 Auggies finishing among the top six in their weight classes in the tournament.

    At 133 pounds, Paul Bjorkstrand (SR, Burnsville, Minn.), ranked No. 4 nationally, went 4-0 with a technical fall to claim his weight class. Josh Roberts went 3-0 with a pin to claim the title at 125.

    At 141, No. 5-ranked Jafari Vanier (SR, Minneapolis, Minn./Bloomington Kennedy HS) claimed his title with a 4-0 performance. Heavyweight Andy Witzel (SR, Fulda, Minn.) went 4-0 to claim his weight-class title, with a pin and major decision along the way.

    Beau Hansen (JR, Albert Lea, Minn.) placed second at 165 pounds for the Auggies, as did Jaime Rocha (SR, Santa Maria, Calif./Righetti HS) at 125 and Brad Baus (SO, Mukwonago, Wis.) at 184.

    Tony Valek (SO, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) tied for third place at 149, while Cody Hansen (FY, Albert Lea, Minn.) placed third at 141. Ryan Seidler (FY, Adams, Wis./Adams-Friendship HS) placed fourth at 141, while Jackson Mboma (SO, Maple Grove, Minn.) placed sixth for the Auggies at 174.

    Augsburg returns to action on Friday (2/12) at 7 p.m. at Si Melby Hall, as Augsburg hosts No. 21-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the final dual meet of the regular season.
