Augsburg (3-1 in dual meets), the defending NCAA Division III national champions and current No. 1-ranked team in the Division III national poll, shut out No. 29-ranked Luther (Iowa) 45-0 in the opening match on Saturday, then scored a 23-13 win over No. 10-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the quarterfinals.
Augsburg will face No. 4-ranked Wisconsin-La Crosse in the semifinals on Sunday (1/9) at 11 a.m. at the UNI-Dome. The championship and third-place matches will be at 3 p.m.
The 11-time national champion Auggies are attempting to become the first team to win three straight championships at the NWCA Division III National Duals, an event in its 10th year. Augsburg has won five of the previous nine National Duals titles, while perennial rival Wartburg (Iowa) has won four titles.
The Auggies are now 34-4 in their Division III National Duals history (39-13 in all National Duals matches), with a current streak of 11 straight victories. In its 38 Division III National Duals meets, Augsburg has outscored its competition by a 1,177-to-349 margin, an average score of 31.0 to 9.2.
Jared Massey (SR, Circle Pines, Minn./Centennial HS), the No. 3-ranked wrestler nationally at 197 pounds, scored two first-period pins on the day for the Auggies, including the lone pin in the victory over Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Five other Auggies also won both their matches on the day. No. 2-ranked 149-pounder Tony Valek (JR, Belle Plaine, Minn./Scott West) improved to 19-1 on the season with two victories, while No. 2-ranked 174-pounder Zach Molitor (SR, Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti HS) had a first-period pin and a 10-1, major-decision win on the day. He is now 6-0 on the year.
No. 2-ranked Orlando Ponce (SR, Hialeah, Fla./Hialeah-Miami Lakes HS) improved to 4-1 on the year with a major decision and a 3-2 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point's No. 7-ranked Jordan Schulte. No. 5-ranked 125-pounder Josh Roberts (SO, Grand Forks, N.D./Grand Forks Central HS) improved to 12-3 with two wins, including a major decision and a 4-1 win over Wisconsin-Stevens Point's No. 6-ranked Joe Mileski. Cody Hansen (SO, Albert Lea, Minn.), ranked No. 8 at 141, also scored two wins, including a major decision, to improve to 11-2 on the year.
