    North Carolina tops Appalachian State

CHAPEL HILL -- Bonus point wins from Evan Henderson, Alex Utley and Chip Ness powered No. 18 North Carolina to a 24-12 victory over in-state foe Appalachian State Sunday afternoon at Carmichael Arena. Henderson recorded his 38th career pin to move into a tie for fourth in school history as the Tar Heels improved to 4-1 in duals this year.

Appalachian State (3-1) jumped out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to wins at 125 and 133. Vito Pasone topped Tyrone Klump 9-3 before Jacob Grigg's last-second reversal lifted him past A.C. Headlee.

Henderson needed just 2:07 to put Michael Longo on his back at 141, as the redshirt senior evened the dual at 6. Henderson now has 109 career wins, tied with Justin Dobies for seventh in program history.

Christian Barber gave UNC its first lead of the day with a 3-1 decision over Matt Zovistoski at 149. The bout was even at 1 after two periods and headed for overtime before Barber scored a takedown in the final 10 seconds to secure the decision.

Robert Henderson and Ethan Ramos gave Carolina some breathing room with wins at the middle weights. Henderson landed a takedown and added a four-point near fall in the third period to win 11-6 at 157 before Ramos outlasted Forrest Przybysz 8-6 at 165.

Appalachian State got back on the board at 174 when Nick Kee beat John Michael Staudenmayer 5-3, but the Tar Heels put the dual away with bonus point wins in the next two bouts.

Redshirt senior Utley used a seven-point sequence in the third period to score a major decision against Taylor Jackson at 184. With the match tied at 1, Utley escaped, landed a takedown and then got four back points in less than 10 seconds. The redshirt senior added another late takedown to win 10-2 and notch the major decision.

Ness was dominant at 197 against Tyler Radford. The sophomore almost got a pin late in the first period before two more four-point near falls in the second saw the bout stopped after 4:38 with Ness up 18-1.

No. 12 Denzel Dejournette took the final match of the day at 285, beating Cory Daniel 9-2.

Carolina will be off next week for final exams before returning to the mat on Dec. 12 against Army West Point in Brooklyn, New York.
