With only two weeks left of regular season duals, every match is becoming more important for seeding at the ACC Championships. We have two ranked versus ranked duals in the ACC this week with the Tar Heels traveling north to face the Hokies and the Panthers making the West Coast trip to face the Cardinal. The final ACC dual of the week completes the Triangle duals with NC State facing Duke in Durham.
#13 North Carolina at #6 Virginia Tech
Last season, North Carolina pulled off a major upset over Virginia Tech that helped secure them a share of the ACC dual title. The Hokies will look to keep that from happening tonight and maintain sole possession of first place in the ACC. This is the first match of a busy weekend for the Hokies, who will also host #3 Oklahoma State on Sunday--I will break that matchup down in full this weekend.
There are some excellent individual matchups to watch in this one, and it is the ACC dual of the week on ACCNetwork. There are six ranked versus ranked matchups in this one and several of them can have major seeding implications. At 125, Eddie Ventresca will look to keep his record unblemished in the ACC against a dangerous Kysen Terukina, with true freshman Aaron Seidel looking to do the same at 133 against veteran Ethan Oakley. 141 could be a big match if Luke Simcox returns to the lineup; he has made his way into the top-10, but has been out of the lineup the last two duals. He would face a gritty Tom Crook. 157 is a sneaky good matchup to keep an eye on and both 165 and 184 will be big matches for seeding.
125 #13 Kysen Terukina v #3 Eddie Ventresca
133 #27 Ethan Oakley or Matthew Botello v #6 Aaron Seidel
141 #10 Luke Simcox or Nick O'Neill v #22 Tom Crook
149 Nate Askew v Noah Nininger or Drew Gorman
157 #25 Laird Root v #16 Ethen Miller
165 #12 Bryce Hepner v #33 Mac Church
174 Collin Carrigan v #30 Sergio Desiante
184 #13 Jake Dailey v #32 Jaden Bullock
197 Robert Platt v #14 Sonny Sasso
285 Jacob Levy v #17 Jimmy Mullen
#12 Pittsburgh at #22 Stanford
Stanford has had a two-week break from ACC competition after their double weekend in Virginia; they won a lopsided dual against Cal Poly last week 43-3. Pittsburgh is coming off a close loss to NC State at home and is hoping to rebound against Stanford. This dual is very lopsided with Stanford having the strength of their lineup in the lightweights with Pittsburgh holding the advantage at the upperweights. There are some solid individual matchups in this one, but three of them really stand out to me. At 149, Kade Brown has been seeming to find his groove lately, despite a tight 4-1 loss to Koy Buesgens last week; he will face Aden Valencia who has shown that he can hang with (and beat) almost anyone in the country. Dylan Evans has shown some flashes this year--including winning the Midlands--and will face the very dangerous All-American Daniel Cardenas; this match will be big for seeing. The match of the dual is at 197 featuring All-American Mac Stout and one of the national leaders in pins, Angelo Posada. They have wildly different styles and if they both open up, this could be a very, very fun match.
125 Tyler Chappell v #10 Nico Provo
133 #26 Evan Tallmadge v #7 Tyler Knox
141 Briar Priest or #29 Anthony Santaniello v #17 Jack Consiglio or Adam Mattin
149 #23 Kade Brown v #13 Aden Valencia
157 #17 Dylan Evans v #10 Daniel Cardenas
165 #32 Jared Keslar v EJ Parco
174 #15 Luca Augustine v Collin Guffey
184 #27 Chase Kranitz v #29 Abe Wojcikiewicz
197 #8 Mac Stout v #13 Angelo Posada
285 #15 Dayton Pitzer v Luke Duthie
#8 NC State at Duke
NC State has dominated the cross-Triangle matchup in recent years, and I wouldn’t expect any different tonight. From the lineup they put out, we will see several non-starters for the Pack - due to rest and/or injury--they are hoping to be back at full strength when they host Cornell next week. There are a couple things to watch in this one, starting at 149. Dylan Ross has been on a run for the Blue Devils but will face one of the top wrestlers in the country in Koy Buesgens. Aiden Wallace is looking to continue his solid run in the conference and gain some seeding momentum, though we won’t see him face All-American Matty Singleton tonight. The only ranked versus ranked matchup will be at 285 with #2 Isaac Trumble looking to maintain his undefeated status and lock up the top seed in the ACC against #23 Conner Barket.
125 Brad Yokum v Spencer von Savoye
133 Zach Redding v Riley Rowan
141 #13 Ryan Jack v Raymond Adams
149 #8 Koy Buesgens v Dylan Ross
157 Luca Felix v Mikey Boulanger
165 #10 Will Denny v Aurelius Dunbar OR Logan Fite
174 Latrell Schafer v #23 Aidan Wallace
184 Don Cates v David Hussey
197 Patrick Brophy v Owen McGrory
285 #2 Isaac Trumble v #23 Connor Barket
