2026 NCAA DI National Championships Preview (141 lbs)

The 2026 NCAA DI Wrestling Championships are less than a week away! In a few short days, 330 wrestlers will make the trek to Cleveland, with hopes of a national title on their minds. Now it's in a city that hasn't hosted nationals since 2018, but it’s within driving distance of some of the top wrestling areas in the country. Before the action on the mat starts, InterMat will go through each individual bracket and highlight the favorites, top matches to watch, and much more. Next up we have a weight class that features a two-time national champion and an undefeated true freshman, among others. The Top Seed: Jesse Mendez (Ohio State) .In the illustrious history of Ohio State wrestling, only two wrestlers have won three national championships (Logan Stieber/Kyle Snyder). Jesse Mendez has the opportunity to add his name to this exclusive list. Mendez’s senior season has easily been his most impressive since coming to Columbus. He heads into the national tournament with a perfect record for the first time in his career. In his 22 matches, only three have ended in regular decisions. Mendez will enter as one of the Hodge Trophy favorites. The last time we saw Mendez he collected his second career Big Ten championship. He posted a 7-2 victory over longtime rival Brock Hardy to get the finals wins. It was his third win this year over Hardy. The first came as Mendez and his teammates won a team title at the National Duals Invitational. He, and his fellow lightweights, went undefeated and sparked the Buckeyes in Tulsa. Mendez was one of the centerpieces of Ohio State's top-ranked recruiting Class of 2022. He never redshirted and immediately jumped in the Buckeyes lineup and earned All-American honors at 133 lbs. Mendez moved up to 141 lbs and captured NCAA titles in back-to-back seasons. His first title came at the expense of Penn State’s Beau Bartlett and last year’s came over Hardy. In 2025-26, Mendez has wrestled as difficult a schedule as anyone. He has 11 wins over seven past All-Americans through the season. Mendez has also been able to increase his offensive output. His bonus point percentage (86.3%) is almost 15% higher than his junior season percentage. The Contenders: #2 Sergio Vega (Oklahoma State), #3 Brock Hardy (Nebraska), #4 Anthony Echemendia (Iowa State), #5 Luke Stanich (Lehigh) The Conference Champs ACC: #10 Jack Consiglio (Stanford) Big 12: #2 Sergio Vega (Oklahoma State) Big Ten: #1 Jesse Mendez (Ohio State) EIWA: #5 Luke Stanich (Lehigh) Ivy: #6 Vince Cornella (Cornell) MAC: #13 Wyatt Henson (Lock Haven) Pac-12: #24 Nash Singleton (Oregon State) SoCon: #33 Aldo Hernandez (Appalachian State) Top First-Round Matches #17 Caedyn Ricciardi (Navy) vs. #16 Ryan Jack (NC State) #12 Luke Simcox (North Carolina) vs. #21 Tyler Wells (Oklahoma) #19 Haiden Drury (Utah Valley) vs. #14 Braeden Davis (Penn State) #15 Eli Griffin (Rider) vs. #18 Carter Nogle (Air Force) This is one of the few weight classes with multiple undefeated wrestlers. In addition to Mendez, Sergio Vega and Luke Stanich have yet to lose during the 2025-26 season. Vega is a true freshman who has yet to even surrender a takedown this year. He is good in most positions, but his best trait has been his ability to come through in clutch situations. There should be plenty of those in Cleveland. Vega owns multiple wins over the #3 and #4 seeds. Stanich won the U20 World Championship over the summer, but in the process, suffered an injury that sidelined him for the first semester. Stanich returned for Lehigh’s rivalry dual against Cornella and handed Vince Cornella what would be his only loss of the season. In the postseason, Stanich cruised to his second career EIWA title with three straight major decisions. The third and fourth seeds belong to veteran All-Americans Brock Hardy and Anthony Echemendia. Hardy has more losses (5) than you’d imagine for a third seed, but all five losses have come to Mendez and Vega. He’s a three-time All-American and knows what it takes to get it done in March. Like Hardy, Echemendia’s only three losses have come to those #1 and #2 seeds. Don’t overlook the sixth seed, Cornella, who has only lost to Stanich this year. He has three wins over multiple-time All-American CJ Composto (Penn) and could see him again in the Round of 16. Like a couple of his Iowa teammates, Nasir Bailey had a bit of an up-and-down regular season, but had a solid Big Ten Tournament and was third. He could be a tough out from the #7 seed. The top half of the bracket has returning All-Americans Ryan Jack and Vance Vombaur. The bottom half also has Braeden Davis and Composto, in addition to the high seeds. Finally, take note of the youngsters out of the ACC. A pair of freshmen were in the conference finals, with Jack Consiglio defeating Luke Simcox. Consiglio gets the 10th seed and Simcox is the 12th. During the regular season, Consigilo was third at CKLV and Simcox won the Soldier Salute. Darkhorse All-American Candidate: #16 Ryan Jack (NC State) Speaking of the ACC, the conference’s third-place finisher, Ryan Jack, will come in as the #16 seed. Jack is a past All-American and could represent a tough second-round match for top-seeded Mendez. Mendez did tech Jack earlier this season, but the two have been close in the past. During the regular season, Jack pinned the eventual conference champion, Consiglio. Unfortunately for Jack, the pair did not meet at ACC’s. Even with a potential loss in the second round, Jack has a decent path to the bloodround and, from there, who knows? Extreme (20+) All-American Candidate: #21 Tyler Wells (Oklahoma) As a true freshman, Tyler Wells made the NCAA Tournament and was the 20th seed. Last year, he was seeded 22nd. So naturally, he gets the 21st seed in Cleveland. In each of his first two attempts, Wells outperformed his seed. He made the bloodround in 2024 and the consolation Round of 16 last year. In his first two years, Wells needed an at-large berth while competing for Minnesota in the Big Ten. This year, there was no waiting with fingers crossed as he finished fourth in the Big 12 and got the automatic berth. Wells managed to keep in conference foes (Vega/Echemendia) in check and lost very close matches to both. The Team Race The top two seeds belong to Ohio State and Oklahoma State. They’re squarely in the trophy hunt. Based on the regular season’s worth of results, Mendez probably has the potential to score more from bonus. Nebraska and Iowa State will both be in the mix for a trophy and they have the three and four seeds. Those two could end up meeting in the consolation semifinals or finals and would be able to give their squads a boost with a win. At 125 lbs, we mentioned that Lehigh doesn’t have as many possible high-point scorers as the other trophy contenders. Stanich is capable of outwrestling his seed and helping his team’s chances. Projected Quarterfinals: #1 Jesse Mendez (Ohio State) vs. #8 Vance Vombaur (Minnesota) #5 Luke Stanich (Lehigh) vs. #4 Anthony Echemendia (Iowa State) #3 Brock Hardy (Nebraska) vs. #6 Vince Cornella (Cornell) #10 Jack Consiglio (Stanford) vs. #2 Sergio Vega (Oklahoma State) Projected Semifinals: #1 Jesse Mendez (Ohio State) vs. #5 Luke Stanich (Lehigh) #3 Brock Hardy (Nebraska) vs. #2 Sergio Vega (Oklahoma State) Projected All-Americans: 1st: Jesse Mendez (Ohio State) 2nd: Sergio Vega (Oklahoma State) 3rd: Anthony Echemendia (Iowa State) 4th: Luke Stanich (Lehigh) 5th: Brock Hardy (Nebraska) 6th: Vince Cornella (Cornell) 7th: Vance Vombaur (Minnesota) 8th: Jack Consiglio (Stanford) Projected Round of 12 Finishers: #7 Nasir Bailey (Iowa) #14 Braeden Davis (Penn State) #21 Tyler Wells (Oklahoma) #16 Ryan Jack (NC State) Projected Consolation Round of 16 Finishers: #17 Caedyn Ricciardi (Navy) #11 CJ Composto (Penn) #20 Julian Tagg (South Dakota State) #9 Joey Olivieri (Rutgers)
