Richards had to take out a multi-time world medalist and as a result of two consecutive, decisive wins only caught a little more shade from Basch because surely it was the weight cut rather than talent. Hard to root against that. Arujau settled the debate once and for all by taking The Leap against someone who believes the earth is flat. Modern Day Sir Isaac Newton if you ask me. Lee is competing at historically our weakest weight by taking out a half human- half challenge brick hybrid monster. How can you not root for him? Zain overcame a particularly challenging case of AssBergers. Talk about a success story. Dake has reversed aging. Only a fool would root against a medical miracle. Marstellar just beat an all-time great by bending space/time and successfully completing a throw out of bounds. Every team should be so lucky to have a quantum physics marvel. Taylor has sacrificed his hair line for his scrambling. He's by far the most humble champ I have ever encountered and his attitude says it all. Zahid has overcome so much - consistently getting beat at every weight he goes, fun weekends in Rome, cosplaying as the Stay-Puft Marshmellow Man etc. How can you not cheer for him? Snyder discovered the secret of dismantling Russian tanks to accomplish his goal of most world titles in a career. I cannot wait to see where his geopolitical career goes next. Steveson is so powerful that he made the letter 'N' disappear from the alphabet. More like Ge_o Petriashvili & Amir Hossei_ Zare if you ask me.5 points

If you remember VHS and reading USA wrestling magazine a month later. You are an old man. So while the whining is hilarious, the old man thing applies. Folks bitch and whine about everything. FLO is not immune to that. I've seen more wrestling content on FLO than I have ever seen anywhere in my lifetime. I believe we all get that.2 points

Rewatched the match last night… not really sure why Yianni was confused. Between that and the last 30 or so seconds of his second match, his match awareness didn’t look on point at Final X.2 points

It astonishes me how quickly flo got so impressively corporate. I worked at big banks where people seemed less scared of falling afoul of the company line than they seem be at flo. This many years on I think it should say a lot that anybody with any sense of independent thinking or a personality has been pushed out of fulltime work at Flo. Anybody interested in going out and seeing if we can bust up some of these contracts they have on tournaments?2 points

Duke won't go to Iowa. it's PSU and Cornell with NCST and Lehigh as long shots. Recently found out that the Cortez brothers have impeccable grades. I feel pretty solid that Stanford will be hard to pass up for them. Robideau already committed to Minny. Him and Perry (to PSU) are the only commits for 2025 so far (unless you count the very likely to OKST for Lockett).1 point

Anecdote: they sold out of Bud Light at my local dive bar, very redneck crowd. Important factual note: Bud Light should be thrown out by virtue of it being awful. Love yourselves more, drink Belgians. #GuldenDraak1 point

I pay $12.50 a month for Flo. If you wanted to pay less to stream your favorite sport, you should have picked a different favorite sport. Wrestling does not have that fan base to charge less. It's also the reason we have to put up with a subpar streaming service, commentators ext... I still remember when I had to buy a poor quality VHS tape months later or read USA Wrestling magazine a month later. So much whining from old men is hilarious. And if you think MLS on AppleTV+ is without issues, think again. I have a paid subscription to AppleTV+ and still had to pay a good chunk of change to add MLS1 point

Well there the reason the #1 is ranked #1, that'd be a data point. But maybe we are looking at it wrong and Harvard or Stanford is the top wrestling program and we are just using the wrong data point.1 point

That doesn't sound like me.... But, as long as I have you here. My guess is that we will see a good sized jump in the regular season where there are some big skill mismatches that will make catch and release a viable strategy. But in the NCAA tournament we are unlikely to see that kind of talent disparity. For example, the TF without back points is the rarest of all animals. Going back to 2015 where they list whether something is a tech fall or major there have been 169 tech falls listed in the brackets and each and every one of them is listed as TF-1.5 (i.e. there were back points). Instead we look at majors that were near tech falls to guess which may have been bumped to tech falls with the addition of an extra take down point. In the 2023 tournament there were 88 major decisions. The breakdown was: 8 point major: 29 (33%) 9 point major: 24 (27%) 10 point major: 16 (18%) 11 point major: 5 (6%) 12 point major: 9 (10%) 13 point major: 5 (6%) 14 point major: 0 (0%) My guess is that very few to none of the 8 and 9 point majors become tech falls with the extra point. For example, lets say the score was 8-0 with 3 take downs, an escape and a riding time point. In the absence of more takedowns the new score would be 11-0. Of course, there is now a greater incentive to ride less and take down more, but I still think almost all 8 and 9 point majors would stay majors. That leaves us the 10 - 14 point majors. All 14 point majors would become TF, but there were none last year. And almost all 13 point majors become TFs (lets say all). But the probability decreases as the difference decreases. If 67% of 12 pointers, 60% of 11 pointers and 50% of 10 pointers become 15+ pointers then last year we would be looking at an extra 22 tech falls. Is 22 extra tech falls a lot? Damn straight it is. From 2015 to 2022 there were an average 23 tech falls. so, yes, a near 100% increase would be a lot. Note: There is one huge caveat. I only looked at major decisions in 2023. And the more careful reader may notice that 2023 was not included in my range in the paragraph above. If you want some free beer at the next NCAA tournament ask someone in a bar to set a line for the number of tech falls in the 2023 tournament, and you will pick over or under. You should almost certainly pick the under. There was a stunningly small number of tech falls last year which may also mean there were an abnormally large number of majors. I do not know because I did not check the number of majors any other year. Perhaps that could be your homework assignment. Think of it as extra credit. Tech Falls by Year: 2015 12 2016 25 2017 33 2018 28 2019 22 2021 28 2022 12 2023 91 point

Some kids were on Twitter over it yesterday. Apparently they have had zero access to their coaches since it started, the investigation was completed and innocence was either found or proven, and they are pissed that they aren't being given any sort of attention, as student-athletes, from the Ohio administration.1 point

No… it’s not. I am a wrestling media guy (a silly little page called The Pin Doctors) and am probably the least social “wrestling media guy” out of any of them and am becoming more that way as time goes by. I don’t ever know the “gossip” stuff from any room, let alone that one… I don’t discuss any other wrestler with my brother other than just him. I don’t even bother to ask him when I discuss wrestling with him because 1.) It puts him in a terrible position (something I learned the hard way during a 2022 situation that’s been beaten to death already) and 2.) I genuinely don’t care. To anyone who has ever followed my page or my stuff dating back to The Predicament, I doubt you’d find many who would say my “M-O” is the wrestling news/gossip stuff. I’m just not into it and it never even occurs to me to ever ask my brother what “so and so” is weighing, who won in Madden between “so and so” and “so and so,” etc. I just really don’t care. I can go to a meet expecting to see world-beaters and would still able to enjoy my time if a bunch of 4th stringers competed. And I’m not stupid. I get it. I understand why people would think it’s me and I can probably list 3-4 reasons as to what would make ppl think that, starting with which groups I share my own Facebook PinDox posts in sometimes…not to mention my big, stupid mouth in a strenuous situation of the 2021-22 season. It looks bad…. I get that. I wasn’t THAT social with other wrestling media to begin with and have taken yet another few steps back from all that since this past fall when I noticed some people assuming certain info was leaked by me. It’s not… and it certainly won’t ever be in the future because now not only do I genuinely not care about the gossip, but I go out of my way to not ever know any of it so it’s damn clear to my own family that it’s not me… which is really the only people I care about in terms of what their opinions are on me and my wrestling mouth. Funny thing is, 75% of the gossip “leaks” that I’ve read ppl blaming me for is stuff that I STILL don’t know to this day because I care THAT little about wrestling gossip stuff to where I don’t even have the motivation to look up what supposedly came from me. People pm me asking me to break news about multiple programs on a daily basis and I rarely even respond to these messages. Because that’s not my bag because I don’t care about it at all. Things are just gonna unwind as they do and I’m fine with that. Sidenote: After some of the mentioned drama from 2021-22, I quit drinking to ensure I never publicly got pissed and went off the handle running my mouth again like I did after the Iowa-Minnesota meet last year. I was hammered that night. And was mortified afterwards. I’ve only been hammered one time since that I can recall and I can’t even frigging believe that, for I used to binge-drink most weekends and every day in my 20’s. Never thought I’d see the day where I didn’t have to worry about the rambunctiousness of “Drunk Swaff.” That was a terrible situation for us, but at least THAT came from it… I needed to stop all that as it was.1 point

Timeline of Flo streaming issues February 2017 - OSU-PSU dual https://www.cowboysrideforfree.com/2017/2/20/14671314/flowrestling-offers-apology-refund-for-fans-after-site-crashes-during-meet "Fans of the two teams who couldn’t make it to Gallagher-Iba Arena to watch had the option to view the match live on FloWrestling.com, who grabbed exclusive broadcasting rights. Unfortunately, the site wasn’t up to the task. FloWrestling’s site crashed at the beginning of the meet, leaving those who had paid the $20 subscription fee to watch out of luck." Flo's response -https://www.flowrestling.org/video/5748204-frl-181-martin-floreani-on-the-osu-vs-psu-failure “We brought a committee together all of our top engineers across Flo sports and we’re going to be looking to to really teardown find the weakness within our platform and expose those weaknesses on our own time and in a testing environments so that something like this doesn’t happen.” CP: "How confident are you that we're not going to run into this kind of issue down the road?" Martin: "I'm very confident..." "We got Tech Falled." January 2019 - Flo signed deal with DC United to distribute their home matches to the local market. March 2019 - Issues arise with the quality of Flo's Stream in the first DC United game of the season. May 2019 - Issues with the quality of Flo's DC United stream have not been sorted. The stream cuts out at critical time of a match with New England Revolution as Martin/Flo is courting MLS for league wide rights after the current deal expires in 2022. https://theathletic.com/1000851/2019/05/29/flo-sports-broadcasts-have-d-c-united-fans-seeing-red/ "D.C. United’s encounter with the New England Revolution last weekend was a slow burner, a game that only picked up its pace in the dying moments. After United captain Wayne Rooney converted a 90th-minute penalty kick, he sprinted into the goal to retrieve the ball, eager to get play underway and find a potential game-winner. Many United fans likely crept to the edge of their seats in anticipation, eager to see that happen. What they ended up seeing for the bulk of the seven minutes of stoppage time was instead a red screen, the “technical difficulties” card of FloSports, the club’s broadcast partner. It was the latest in a frustrating series of events for United fans, many of whom pay as much as $8.99 per month to watch their club’s home games. " https://awfulannouncing.com/streaming/flosports-is-talking-to-rest-of-mls-about-obtaining-local-tv-rights.html "DC United and FC Cincinnati fans weren’t thrilled about FloSports in the first place. It’s not so much about the company itself, it’s that in an era where people are paying for multiple streaming services, they now have to pay for one more just to watch their team and are probably only going to pay to watch their team. Some probably won’t bother. It wouldn’t be so bad if DC United and FC Cincinnati chose someone like ESPN+ because ESPN+ is not only less expensive ($5 per month compared to $20 per month) but offers way more soccer options than FloSports (out of market local MLS games, USL, US Open Cup, EFL, FA Cup, EFL Cup, Serie A, etc.) And since ESPN+ has plenty of other programming and mainstream sports available, it’s at least a platform many non-MLS fans subscribe to, putting the league in front of new fans. That will not happen if MLS moves to FloSports." Oct 2019 - DC United terminates $12 million 4 year rights deal that started in March 2019 after complaints from fans of technical issues and cost. DC United fans were paying significantly less than wrestling fans are charged and had access to all the same stuff as wrestling fans. DC United likely had to pay an exit fee to terminate the agreement and streamed their remaining matches for free missing out on rights money for those games. It is also likely that they were not able to find anther rights parter willing to pay $9 million for the three years they had remaining. It was likely a disastrous deal for United and Flo. https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/dc-united-flosports-streaming-deal-ended-mls-tv-rights "The move brings to an end what proved to be a problematic deal for DC United. Fans of the franchise were initially unhappy at having to pay between US$5.99 and US$8.99 per month for FloSports, which was compounded when the streaming service suffered technical difficulties. DC United’s draw against New York City FC in March, for example, was marred by interruptions. June 2020 - Flo's other MLS team terminates their rights deal for similar reasons as DC United midway through the second year of the deal. Flo's product was not up capable of meeting the demands of even the worst team in MLS. https://www.sportspromedia.com/news/fc-cincinnati-flosports-streaming-tv-rights-local-cancel/ "FC Cincinnati were forced to defend the FloSports deal last year after fans aired frustrations that the platform was technically unstable and prohibitively expensive. Annual subscriptions for the 2019 season were priced at US$150, with the first 2,000 to sign up receiving a discounted rate of US$99 for the year." "Fans who have purchased FC Cincinnati subscriptions on FloSports for 2020 will be given refunds." June 2023 - Final X CP "Unacceptable streaming quality for Final X." "Steps are going to be taken to make sure it doesn't happen again." and again and again and again and again.1 point
