Just a few short years ago Rutgers seemed to be a program on the upswing.  They crowned their first 2 NCAA champs in Nicky Suriano and Anthony Ashnault, they were an above-average B10 program and on the verge of becoming a top 10 team nationally.

What has happened since then though?

They haven't been able to attract the same type of transfer talent and their primo recruits (e.g. Aragona and now Alvarez) have left the program.

Rutgers seems to be trending downward back toward irrelevance.  Is new coaching blood needed?  Has Goodale lost his magic?

I think the "NJ" attitude that surrounds the program is wearing thin for some recruits. If you have the grades and want to stay in NJ, why choose Rutgers over Princeton? And if you are good enough, why choose Rutgers over PSU? Or Michigan, or NU? And so on. My kid was an NJ placer and wanted nothing to do with that Rutgers vibe. Know for a fact he was not alone, and that feeling seems more pronounced of late.

A rare exception to actually comment on one of your posts but , they are still solid in the transfer portal , Seabass, Bulsak who AAed, heilman , number 1 recruit dean Peterson whose the 125 , Alvarez himself was a portal guy..

but recruiting has taken a hit , then have basically no one coming in 2023 class , 165 has been a black hole since perrotti graduated in 15/16 , turley AAed at 174 as a freshman but is a complete shell of himself now and still has 2 years of eligibility, 197 is another guy the program has had at 3 different weights and his body is broken down , and they have a Juco heavyweight while wrestling in the big ten, add that to the fact that support is at an all time high , but can’t seem to bring in a resident athlete for more than a few months before they leave , they have no real upper weight coaches for both the college team and RTC and if they don’t beat Maryland it’s a good chance they go 0-8 in the big ten , things have stagnated at RU and they probably do need a change for a spark .. they have a lot of HS guys train at the RTC but don’t seem to be getting those guys to there for college

also letting Sebastian Rivera do whatever he wanted after he transferred in rubbed some people the wrong way , claiming he’d make the cut for team 2 straight years then deciding close to the season that he wouldn’t , him going to do team Puerto Rico stuff over Rutgers stuff, some definite issues

but that being said they have a #1 recruit at 125 with full eligibility, shawyver is a solid R16/r12 guy so those 2 should be 125/133 the next 2 seasons, Oliveri only a sophomore at 141 should be an AA eventually , White is a freshman at 149 and had a great redshirt year and has a lot of room to grow, 157 has Clark who was an afterthought recruit who has really taken some huge jumps ( beat artalona this year ) and at 184 they have a #1 recruit whose a freshman and an AA with 2 or 3 more years in redshirt , if they can fit all those guys in the lineup together and snag a big guy or 2 in the portal they could be back in the middle of the pack in the big ten by next year but if not then maybe it’s time to hand the keys over to pritzlaff or swing for the fences and throw a ton of money at someone like JB and hope he wants the challenge

What is the vibe exactly?

Very NJ-centric, with the social and cultural overtones that go along with that. Hard to really know it without being involved in NJ wrestling.

I don't get the feeling it's more pronounced, they were just really helped by having 1 or 2 studs like Ashnault, Suriano and Rivera.  And Ashnault was the only one that went there as a freshman.    Soldano could have the opportunity to become that.  Top NJ guys will often choose other schools, in part because a lot of kids just want to get out of state in general, but I'm sure some also want the top programs.  Rutgers has for awhile gotten the "second tier" NJ recruits, which are still very good.  And they've started getting some more from out of state.   They probably shouldn't be losing to Indiana though.  And I like Goodale but I can't really think of anyone that seems to have improved a ton since getting there.

I just went through their roster, no wonder there is a Jersey vibe!

IDK much about Rutgers, but it looks like a good school, B10, not outrageously priced, close too NYC.  Is it they can't recruit out of state or won't?

It is a good school. Like any good, big state u., you can get an excellent education if you want to and put the effort in. Or you can just slide by. The campus is not the most pleasant and there is little of that "college town" feel. I mean, if you want to stay in NJ, attend a top school with a top program, have the grades and get a solid aid package, Princeton is impossible to beat, IMO.

Dean Peterson was #1?  Ahead of say, Figueroa?

Also Peterson was Princeton originally and I won't go into details, but I heard the team didn't want him and that caused him to flip.

Aragona not wrestling at all, right?

they had some bad luck too - like Glasgow instead of Lewis, similar value out of HS.  Glory wanted an Ivy league school.  I assume Griffith wanted a school of that caliber as well.

I heard he left because glory decided to stay at 125 when the original plan was glory would move up , Peterson was ranked number 1 for awhile he even won at whose #1 over Jordan Titus , missed the back half of the season and states his senior because of injury makes people forget how good he was in hs

Princeton is ranked as one of the top Universities in the World...Pretty simple if you can get accepted you probably go there. NJ Wrestling has been on a slight decline lately and being a state place winner is not as big of a deal as it was 5/10 years ago...Your son wanted nothing to do with B1G Rutgers and I would bet that was mutual and Rutgers had no interest in him...Let me guess, He's at a D3 Program right now

How do you figure NJ wrestling is on the decline? Just last season CJ composto AAed as a true freshman after placing in NJ states once (3rd) , last season was the first true down year in terms of AAs but doesn’t mean the state is on the decline

You seem offended, or maybe just nasty for no reason. My son is long graduated (back before the "decline") but my post was not about him.  But you are right, Rutgers was not after him, though a couple Ivies were. My point was, he was not interested in them, and many others felt the same, then and now, even those who were recruited. By the way, there are kids on the roster now who were low NJ placers.
