Ramos weighed in and was warming up.   His coach "ducked" him against Nebraska's Smith

Yes Ersland also sat him against Minnesota earlier.  Flynn had taken him to SV the last time they wrestled

Ramos had nothing to gain by wrestling. He has the number 1 seed locked up for big tens.

Still, bad for the sport. He is a senior in Purdue's last home dual of the season (on national television) and one of the programs best wrestlers ever. To not go out there in an effort to protect his seed for the Big10 tournament just sucks.

Listening to the commentators it was said they thought he was recovering from a light touch of Flu.

Who knows what reality is?

Love it when there's nothing to gain from wrestling.  We need more of this in the sport.  🦆

Agree.  Especially since it was towards the end of the dual so there were probably a bunch of people tuning in to get ready for Iowa/OSU.

Not to mention he may have still gotten the 1 seed at B10’s even if he lost.

It was hyped as the "match of the dual" on the B1G Network, in a dual meet which didn't exactly have a whole bunch of stellar matchups.  Then the announcers had egg on their face when Ramos didn't go out there.  Just a bad look all around.

I agree with all of this but what is the solution to prevent ducking?

That's a complicated question, but at minimum I think coaches should be expected to communicate with broadcast networks beforehand.  It was an embarrassing unforced error watching the B1G Network hype up the match, only to be like... "welp, guess we aren't seeing that one."  If you're going to harm the product that you put out there for fans and viewers, at least do them the courtesy of a heads up so people can make other plans and so networks/announcers can be prepared.

The person who doesn't duck, gets credit for the win (via fall) over that school's postseason starter. So in this case, Caleb Smith would have a fall win over Purdue's postseason starter, who will be Matt Ramos. So if they were to end up with comparable resumes (in this case they won't), Smith would have a big advantage for seeding criteria at conference and NCAAs. A good way to reward the wrestler, but not put a L on the duckers record (in case they really are hurt/injured/etc.).

so tired of hearing that as a viable reason to not lace them up and get after it

why suit him? to get in Smith's head for a low level guy? I think it may have backfired.

Not sure if this is true but I heard someone say it looked like they would send him if Nebraska didn’t send Smith (Nebraska also weighed in 2 guys at 125)

I remember stepping on the mat against whoever, or whatever, the opposing coach threw on the mat against me. Most of the time if I was going to get a forfeit my coach would move me up to the next weight and put my pussy buddy in to take the forfeit while I wrestled a guy in the next weight class above. It always worked out, the fat boys were putty in my hands.

I think he's a lock for the #1 seed at Big Tens too, but his coaches may be looking ahead and protecting his record for Nationals. Not that I agree with it, nor does Ramos need the seed protection.

It's odd to me that he weighed in.  If you want give him the day off, okay I don't love it for the sport but his goal is the Natty and you think this helps, but why make him cut to make 125, gamesmanship in a dual you lost by ~30??

I would think making 125 is harder for him than wrestling a 7 minute match.

I'm not trying to be rude, but please stop comparing your local high school wrestling in the 70s to D1 wrestling in 2025..
