NCAA grants winter athletes additional season

The NCAA's Division I Council voted this week to grant all winter athletes, including wrestlers, who compete during the 2020-21 season, an additional season of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spring athletes were previously granted an additional season of eligibility.

"The pandemic will continue to impact winter sport seasons in ways we can't predict. Council members opted to provide for winter sport student-athletes the same flexibility given spring and fall sports previously," council chair M. Grace Calhoun said in a statement. "The actions today ensure the continuation of local decision-making in the best interest of each institution and its student-athletes."

Many wrestlers missed out on the opportunity to compete at the 2020 NCAA Wrestling Championships after the NCAA canceled all championship events on March 12. Graduating seniors did not receive any eligibility relief, with the council noting that those athletes had the opportunity to complete their regular seasons.

Pretty unfair for those that lost their year last year. The opportunity was taken away to finish the year even though modifications could have and should have happened. Very disappointed with NCAA to not let them finish their season.

Most unfair indeed! But 2020 seniors were the victims extremely cruel timing. When the NBA suspended their season, panic set in and the NCAA made rash decisions without logically evaluating the options that were available. Then to pour more salt in the wounds, rather than partially rectify the bad decisions with another year of eligibility, they basically told the seniors tough $h^*! So they are left with the agonizing feeling of never knowing how their year would have finished. It's a feeling that eats at you for a lifetime, it fades, but never disappears.

PS - part of the reason for not extending eligibility was the strain it would put on already tight scholarship funds. But now it's not a problem? This year's HS seniors are going to find $$ very hard to come by I'm afraid.
