Stanford tops Cal Poly in Pac-12 opener

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Despite wrestling without multiple starters, No. 21 Stanford opened Pac-12 action with a 22-13 win at Cal Poly, Friday, at Mott Gym.

Stanford won six of the 10 bouts to improve to 5-1 overall, while Cal Poly dropped to 2-4, 0-1 in the Pac-12.

The dual started at 174 pounds, where redshirt junior Jared Hill got the Cardinal on the board first with an 8-5 decision over Nathan Tausch. It was the first win of the season for Hill.

Cal Poly took the lead momentarily with wins at 184 and 197 pounds. Stanford freshman Seamus O'Malley wrestled 12th-ranked Tom Lane tough at 197 pounds. The Cardinal rookie had a 2-1 lead after the first. O'Malley is now 5-4.

Making his season debut, redshirt sophomore Hadyn Maley knotted up the team score with an 11-2 major decision over Samuel Aguilar at heavyweight. True freshman Jackson DiSario put the Cardinal back in front with a dominating 15-0 technical fall over Benny Martinez at 125 pounds.

Senior Brandon Kier registered his first dual win of the year with a 5-1 decision over Trae Vasquez at 133 pounds. Wrestling up at 141 pounds, true freshman Luciano Arroyo came up short in a 5-3 sudden victory decision for Cal Poly's Wyatt Cornelison, cutting Stanford's lead to 15-13.

Redshirt freshman Tyler Eischens turned in a 7-1 decision over Brawley Lamer at 157 pounds. Eischens led 4-1 after two. He scored a reversal to start the third and finished with 3:15 of riding time to improve to 16-6 overall.

Redshirt freshman Shane Griffith capped the scoring for the Cardinal with a 16-2 major decision over Bernie Truax. Griffith, who is ranked seventh nationally, is now 18-0 to start the season - tied for the ninth-longest winning streak in program history.

Stanford remains on the road this weekend, wrestling at Life Pacific (2 p.m.) and California Baptist (6 p.m.) on Saturday.
