Apology for tweet from InterMat staff writer

During the Ohio State-Penn State football game on Saturday night, one of our staff writers posted an offensive tweet from his personal account. His comment in no way represents our values at InterMat. We will be taking corrective action on this and are deeply sorry to anyone who was offended by the comment.

I hope that corrective action is his termination. Perhapsthe most egregious and unprofessional act committed by a sports "journalist". Your integrity is on the line

Chris I think you may be overstating the seriousness of this offense a bit. This event probably gives Josh Lowe a perspective that he didn't have before, that he shouldn't make statements such as that one. However, far, far worse things have been said regarding PSU. Calling PSU "Ped State" was crude and cheap, but it's not baseless. PSU leadership DID spend a decade(s) covering the crimes of a pedophile.

A couple other things:

1) You should note that his twitter account has ALWAYS had the disclaimer that his tweets are his own and do not represent the views of the organizations with which he is associated. It is his own personal twitter.

2) You are calling for his "termination." The wrestling community and Intermat are the parties that would lose the most by "terminating" him. If you think that Intermat is his full-time gig, you are sadly mistaken. Josh earns his living another way, but loves wrestling and writes for Intermat on the side. I don't know the specifics of the relationship, but "terminating" Josh is not going to destroy his livelihood as you would like it to. Instead, it will strip the HS wrestling community of one of its most dedicated and knowledgeable resources. You can't just pull someone else from the streets to fill Josh's shoes. Simply put, there aren't many (any?) people available who bring to the table what Josh does.

So I guess what I'm saying is.. I'm not defending his tweet--it was a cheap shot. However, I think it would be wise to keep some perspective here. What he said is nothing that hasn't been joked about across the country for the last year, and it's not libel. It also wasn't said in any context that was related to wrestling or Intermat. I hope Josh and Intermat learn from this, but Josh's contribution to the wrestling community is a great one for which he probably (this is my guess) receives minimal compensation. Josh isn't the one who will pay the biggest price if he is "terminated."

I agree with Ben. Josh showed a lack of maturity (also referring to Michigan as scUM and USC as "Spoiled children." He also failed to consider that his posts were under his intermat twitter. But he is one of the brightest and most honest wrestling analysts we have. Let's give him a mulligan and not overreact to a silly mistake.

I am CERTAIN he will be fired. There is only one rule at Intermat: Promote Penn State at all costs.

This is the premier Penn State Wrestling fan site. This aggression will not stand, Man!

First off I agree wholeheartedly with Ben Golden.

Secondly Chrisrn1965's comment "Perhaps the most egregious and unprofessional act committed by a sports journalist" is LAUGHABLE. Chris, you must not watch sports too often/are probably a penn state alum. Within the past week Stephen A Smith said "N*GGA Please" on ESPN... he was not terminated.

People are far too sensitive. Josh Lowe didn't slander PSU.. they did harbor a pedophile. Watch any Saturday "Gameday" sportscast and you'll see more offensive signs behind Kirk Herbstreet and Lee Corso. That's on national tv.. not twitter.

Furthermore, this is sports you're entitled to have an opinion, root for your team and root against others. It's a little too PC nowadays.. everyone's offended by everything. Put on your Big Boy pants Chris.. if you don't like his tweet try unfollowing him instead of crying to his superiors asking for his termination.

Anyways if you fire Josh Lowe I definitely won't be renewing my Intermat subscription which I've had for a few years. He is irreplaceable, knows the most statistics and more about wrestling than anyone else on your site... and he isn't continuously talking about BJJ/Fantasy superhero wrestling matchups... Leave that kind of stuff to the amateurs over at flo.

One other point, they fire Josh and a lot of us have no reason to subscribe to the site.
Danimal Dan (1) about 9 years ago
I too must agree with Ben. Josh is the primary reason I subscribe to Intermat and a childish tweet made at a football game seems like a rather small offense. If you fire Josh, I will take my money wherever his talent goes next. Harsh reprimand yes, termination, no way.

For those of you defending Josh Lowe. Am I to believe that he can now cover Penn State wrestling in a fair and unbiased manner? I think not. Whether you like it or not he has permanently damaged his journalistic intergrity, not to mention the fact that he is demonstrated that he is also an immature jerk.

I have had many an email conversation with both Josh and Andrew while doing some NYS related work for InterMat...Both are top notch individuals who I hold in the highest regard.

Did Josh use bad judgement? Yes! Did he do so attempting to cause harm? Of course not; it was a joke that perhaps came a little too soon. If you have ever chatted with the guy, you know that he is not a mean spirited person.

Since the incident happened, he was owned up to it and apologized. I doubt we will see a repeat act.

The guy is human said something dumb. I've done the same thing many times in my life and people were kind enough to chalk it up to a moment of stupidly but were willing to forgive. I owe Josh that same courtesy.

You apologists, who focus on the egregious crimes of a sick individual--and their cover-up by bureaucrats who displayed the typical pathetic weakness and cowardice that bureaucrats in all governments of all types in all places show (I speak from personal experience as a former consultant to presidents in 4 countries)--obfuscate the issue and show yourselves to be of comparable moral integrity to the low-life tweeter. I, personally, am not the least surprised to learn of this episode--nor of the myriad others that preceded it--from Lowe, as his actions and behavior over the years has come in to "question" many times, and deservedly so. I for one say "good riddance"; as a former Olympic-level participant and long-time student of this great sport, I could list 10 more worthy successors in 10 seconds for the position than this unethical loser.
Ben Golden (1) about 9 years ago
Chris: To answer your question, yes, you can most certainly expect all of Josh's analyses and commentary to be unbiased. He has never shown the slightest bias in any of the work published on here. To be frank, his objectivity shocks (and, as a fellow Ohioan, offends) me.

But even beyond this, you don't need to worry about that situation because Josh covers high school wrestling--not college.
DannyClarke (1) about 9 years ago
Chris I am starting to believe you are a certified moron. You do realize all of your sports writers have favorite teams but still manage to write in an unbiased manner. So he used a little satire, that doesnt me he cant write a column that is fair and balanced. He has only "permanently damaged his journalistic intergrity" to cry baby, liberal, penn state jock riders, who can't take a joke with stride.
chrisrn1965 (1) about 9 years ago
Danny:

A joke is intended to be funny. Mr. Lowe's tweet was not funny or the least bit clever. Sports writers may all have favorite teams but they do not insult a rival team in a public forum which results in a loss of journalistic intergrity. If you can't understand these points you must be the moron.
