A day after the American women’s freestyle team captured a world championship, their male counterparts put themselves in position to win themselves on Sunday. The final members of the men’s freestyle team hit the mat on Saturday and three out of the four wrestlers will compete for gold medals tomorrow.

In today’s action, Kyle Dake added another world title, while three others wrestled back for bronze medals.

In his gold medal matchup, Dake tangled with Azerbaijan’s Arsenii Dzhioev, a returning world bronze medalist. There wasn’t much action in the opening period and Dake got on the board with a point via a Dzhioev activity clock violation. Early in the second, Dake was in position for a go-behind, but dropped down to Dzhioev’s leg and switched to a single, which he finished at the edge for the only two-point score of the contest. It was enough for him to get his hand raised in a 3-2 victory.

With the latest championship, Dake now has five world titles and they’ve come at three different weights. Two at 79 kg, two at 74 kg, and this latest at 86 kg. He also had a total of eight world/Olympic medals.

Dake’s win over Dzhioev makes it back-to-back matches at this tournament with wins over wrestlers who previously beat him earlier this year. In the semis, he avenged a Ranking Series loss to Russia’s Ibragim Kadiev.

Just a day after Kyle Snyder made his case for American wrestling’s hypothetical Mount Rushmore, Dake threw his hat into the ring.

Wrestling back for bronze medals on Saturday were Marcus Blaze (61 kg), Zain Retherford (70 kg), and Wyatt Hendrickson (125 kg). Blaze did not initially make the semifinals, so he needed a repechage win before advancing to a bronze medal bout.

The bronze medals were the first at the Senior level for Blaze and Hendrickson, while Retherford now has a sizable medal collection of his own. He has three world medals, one of each color.

In the final group of competitors for the United States, Spencer Lee (57 kg), Levi Haines (79 kg), and Trent Hidlay (92 kg) all qualified for tomorrow’s gold medal matches.

Lee was trailing Azerbaijan’s Islam Bazarganov 10-3 on the scoreboard after giving up a takedown and a few turns. Bazarganov got sloppy trying for another gut wrench and Lee grabbed a headlock and caught Bazarganov on his back for the fall.

And extra level of intrigue surrounds Lee’s gold medal match tomorrow. He’ll face former Penn State two-time national champion, Roman Bravo-Young, who competes for Mexico. It also pits Penn State and Iowa grads against each other. The pair met in 2025 in the semifinals of the Zagreb Open and Lee won 8-3.

Bravo-Young’s Penn State teammate, Levi Haines, is back in the world finals for a second time in as many tries. Haines had a workman-like 3-3 win on criteria over Mongolia’s Suldkhuu Olonbayar, the same opponent he defeated in the 2025 world semifinals.

For the gold medal, Haines will take on Iran’s Mohammad Nokhodilarimi, a five-time world medalist who had a long hit list of Americans he’s beaten over the past three years. That group includes Dean Hamiti, Jordan Burroughs, Evan Wick, Joey Lavallee, and Chance Marsteller.

The final match of the tournament will feature a rematch of the 2025 world finals at 92 kg. Trent Hidlay will take on Russia’s Amanula Gadzhimagomedov. Hidlay’s 13-10 comeback win over Gadzhimagomedov was one of the most memorable moments from the 2025 tournament.

Just to make the 2026 finals, Hidlay had to stage another impressive comeback, this time at the expense of Iran’s Amirhossien Firouzpourbandpei. The Iranian held an 8-2 lead late in the first period; however, Hidlay reeled off nine straight points in the closing moments of the first and into the second to grab an 11-8 victory.

The Americans will also have James Green alive in the 74 kg repechage. He will need two wins just to wrestle for a bronze medal.

It was hard to top the first day of men’s freestyle competition at the 2026 World Championships, but the American squad might have accomplished that feat. On Thursday, Bo Bassett and Kyle Snyder defeated world champions from Russia along their paths to the world finals. Today, both completed their runs with gold medals.

Additionally, four of their team members started their tournaments and each is still in medal contention.

Friday’s finals featured one of the prodigies of a past generation teaming up with the current “next big thing” to claim gold medals as Snyder and Bassett took the mat.

Each finished their tournaments in different ways, but each was fitting given their history and reputation.

Bassett took the mat first against Armenian veteran Vazgen Tavanyan, a two-time Olympian and one-time world bronze medalist. The Armenian made the finals after a controversial last-second win over returning champion Rahman Amouzad of Iran. Tavanyan was given a point for a caution on Amouzad for failing to engage during the final seconds of their semifinal contest, which turned the bout in Tavanyan’s favor.

The Tavanyan/Bassett matchup was always going to be a contrast in styles. Bassett is known for his motor, pace, and variety and frequency of offensive attacks. Tavanyan is more measured with his offense and is generally defensive minded. In a sign of things to come, Bassett finally was able to penetrate through Tavanyan’s defense and secure a takedown during the final seconds of the opening period.

Though he held a 2-1 lead, Bassett only turned up the pressure offensively in the second and netted three additional takedowns, along with a point for a head slap from Tavanyan.

For the final three seconds of the match, Bassett allowed the time to run out and began to savor the victory. Those were potentially the only three seconds of the bout in which Bassett was not furiously trying to set up an attack.

With his win, Bassett now has two world titles in 2026 - one at the U20 age group and this one at Seniors. It likely washes the sour taste out of his mouth after a medal-less showing at the U23 World Championships earlier this month.

Bassett became the first American to win a world title at the 65/66 kg range since current head coach Bill Zadick won a world championship in 2006.

If Bassett is known for pace and overall domination, Snyder has become synonymous with engineering clutch comeback wins. The veteran added another incredible comeback to his resume as he escaped from a 4-0 hole and shocked Japan’s Arash Yoshida with under :30 left in their 97 kg final.

After getting frustrated with Yoshida’s head/hands defense and ability to wiggle out of danger, Snyder finally broke through his Japanese opponents defense and finished a single leg at the edge of the match with :24 seconds remaining in the contest. He nearly got four points for the finish, but wasn’t able to challenge the ruling due to a lost challenge in the previous sequence.

That didn’t end up mattering as Snyder stayed extremely active and was able to create a situation where he got a go-behind to tie the bout at four, but he went ahead on criteria. Snyder nearly turned Yoshida in a gut wrench, but that effort from par terre milked the final seconds on the clock and Snyder won a 4-4 match.

The win gives Snyder his fifth world championship and sixth world/Olympic title. That combination of six puts him in a tie with legends John Smith and Adeline Gray, one behind Jordan Burroughs. He now has 11 world/Olympic medals and has left with hardware in every World/Olympic event since 2015, but one.

Speaking of adding to medals and legacy, Kyle Dake will be looking to do that tomorrow as he advanced to the world finals at 86 kg. Dake grinded out a workmanlike 6-3 victory over young Russian star Ibragim Kadiev in the semifinals.

In the finals, Dake will face Azerbaijan’s Arsenii Dzhioev, a bronze medalist from the 2025 tournament. Dzhioev has a win over Dake earlier this year at the Muhamet Malo Ranking Series event; however, Kadiev also beat him during that tournament, as well.

Both Zain Retherford (70 kg) and Wyatt Hendrickson (125 kg) advanced to the semifinals before suffering a loss, so both will drop down to bronze medal matches. Marcus Blaze (61 kg) fell in the quarterfinals but was pulled back into repechage, so he’ll need to win a match before wrestling for the bronze.

After some ups and downs during the first couple of days of competition at the 2026 Senior World Championships, Thursday was an excellent day for the American team. Both for the men’s and women’s freestyle teams. Thursday saw the final two women’s weight classes begin competition, while the first two men’s freestyle brackets go underway, as well. In both instances, the two American men and women who started their tournaments today each advanced to Friday’s gold medal matches.

If that wasn’t enough, later in the session Adaugo Nwachukwu captured the first gold medal of the 2026 tournament for the Americans.

Nwachukwu displayed some last-second heroics during her 12-11 victory over two-time world champion and 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Nonoka Ozaki (Japan). During their back-and-forth affair, the two exchanged four-point throws and action-packed sequences. Ozaki came from a 5-0 first-period deficit to take the late lead 11-9. With :14 seconds remaining on the restart, Nwachukwu pushed the pace and was finally able to hustle her way into a takedown during the final few seconds. The takedown gave her criteria and an 11-11 victory. The Japanese corner challenged the flurry; however, the call was upheld, making the final score 12-11.

This was Nwachukwu’s first Senior World medal in only her second appearance at the event. Earlier this month, she finished as the silver medalist at the U23 World Championships.

Nwachukwu’s win is the first by an American woman over a Japanese opponent in a world or Olympic final since Tamyra Mensh-Stock defeated Ami Ishii for a world title in 2022.

In addition to Nwachukwu, Kennedy Blades also grabbed some hardware on Thursday. She posted two wins on the day, one via tech and a fall in her medal round match to claim a bronze medal in the 68 kg weight class. It’s the second straight year that Blades earns a bronze medal at the World Championships.

Cristelle Rodriguez-Dobler (53 kg) and Precious Wieser (72 kg) each wrestled in a bronze medal match, but came up just short.

One of the most anticipated weight classes of the entire tournament starts this morning as action took place at the 97 kg men’s freestyle bracket. It is a group that contains four past Olympic gold medalists and a handful of legendary figures. Two of those collided in the quarterfinals as Kyle Snyder won the latest round in his rivalry with Russia’s Abdulrashid Sadulaev.

As he’s been known to do, Snyder had to come from behind to get the latest win over his Russian rival. Sadulaev got a takedown midway through the second period to take a 4-1 lead. That didn’t last as Snyder was able to score twice from a front headlock position - once with a takedown and the other netted a step out point. The 4-4 match went Snyder’s way on criteria.

After being Sadulaev, Snyder cruised to a 5-0 victory over Poland’s Zbigniew Baranowski to make the world finals. There he’ll face Japan’s Arash Yoshida. Yoshida defeated Snyder at a Ranking Series tournament in 2025; however, Snyder got revenge with a win in the 2025 World semifinals. The Japanese wrestler went on to win his first Senior world medal (bronze).

Speaking of comebacks, the other American men’s freestyle wrestler, Bo Bassett, staged one for the ages in the quarterfinals. Facing Russia’s Abasgadzhi Magomedov, Bassett trailed 12-3 early in the second period. Bassett never wavered and outscored the Russian 11-1 during the final two minutes of the match to take the match, 14-13.

The finals appearance comes less than two weeks after a disappointing medal-less showing from Bassett at the U23 World Championships.

For the gold medal, Bassett will face Armenia’s Vazgen Tevanyan, a two-time Olympian and world bronze medalist.

From one young sensation to the next, in women’s freestyle, Everest Leydecker also advanced to a gold medal match on Friday. Leydecker posted a steady 6-1 victory over Japan’s Nagisa Harada in the 55 kg semifinals.

Like Bassett, Leydecker’s finish at the Senior tournament has already surpassed her result at the recent U23 World Championships (bronze).

Finally, veteran Abby Nette emphatically clinched her first Senior world medal and a trip to tomorrow’s final with a fall over Ukraine’s Mariia Vynnyk in the semifinals. Vynnyk was the returning world silver medalist at 59 kg.

Leading 4-0, Nette held a Russian tie and Vynnyk tried to shoot through the hold. That proved to be unsuccessful and Nette drove her right to her back. After a prolonged fight from Vynnyk, Nette finally got the fall.

The final group of three Greco-Roman weights got their tournaments underway on Monday. The American squad did not pick up a win; however, one of their wrestlers has been pulled back into repechage. 

At 67 kg, Otto Black dropped his only bout of the day, in the Round of 32 to Uzbekistan’s Aytjan Khalmakhanov, 12-1. Khalmakhanov’s 4-0 win over Slavik Galstyan in the semifinals brought Black back into medal contention. 

On Tuesday, Black will need to win three matches to come back to the States with some hardware. His trek to the medal round starts tomorrow morning with a matchup against Australia’s Tsuchika Shimoyamada. 

At 63 kg, Xavier Johnson was pulled from the bracket via injury and did not compete. 

The other wrestler competing for Team USA on the day was Beka Melelashvili at 87 kg. Melelashvili led heading into the final :45 seconds; however, his opponent, Ivan Huklek of Croatia, used a pair of underhooks to toss Melelashvili to his back for four points and then a fall.

The first day of the 2026 Senior World Championships kicked off with action in the Greco-Roman discipline. Unfortunately, the United States was only able to post one win on the day and pushed one wrestler into tomorrow’s repechage round. 

The single win on Saturday belonged to Max Nowry, who defeated Kazakhstan’s Nazarmamad Rakhmonbekov 11-2 during the round of 32 in the 55 kg weight class. One match later, Nowry was beaten by the Iranian, Payam Ahmadi Balootaki. Nowry got pulled into repechage when Ahmadi Balootaki made the gold medal match. 

In order for Nowry to earn a bronze medal on Sunday, he’ll need to post two wins. The first would have to come against Asian silver medalist Lalit Sehrawat. 

Along with Nowry’s repechage match, the 72, 97, and 130 kg weight classes will start their tournaments on Sunday.

We’re only a few days away from the first day of the 2026 U23 World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada. It will be the first world level event of any age group held in the United States since 2015, when Las Vegas hosted the Senior World Championships. With that in mind, the US team is loaded and should capture a bunch of medals across all three styles.

2022 U17 World champion Joseph Sealey takes over the men’s freestyle 79 kg spot for Team USA at the 2026 Galaxy U23 World Championships, October 12-18, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

2023 U20 World bronze medalist Matthew Singleton was originally slated to represent the U.S. at 79 kg; however, after an injury, Singleton can no longer compete. Sealey takes over the spot after approval from the Men’s Freestyle Sports Committee, as outlined in the U23 World Team Selection Criteria.

This will be Sealey’s second age-group World Team after he powered through the 71 kg weight class at the 2022 U17 World Championships. He teched his way to gold, allowing just one point across five matches and outscoring his opponents 55-1.

Sealey recorded two third-place finishes at domestic Senior-level events this year. He placed third at the U.S. Open Championships and Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament at 74 kg.

Action at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas takes place October 12-18, with men’s freestyle action wrapping up the tournament October 16-18. FloWrestling will provide video coverage throughout the tournament. Live results will be available on UWW Arena.

The final pieces of the 2026 Senior World Team have been decided, as there were two Final X wrestle-off’s outside of Columbus, Ohio, on Friday afternoon. Bo Bassett completes the men’s team by winning the 65 kg series, while Dymond Guilford rounds out the women’s squad at 76 kg.

These series’ were moved from June as returning world medalists Real Woods and Kylie Welker requested a delay due to injuries. Interestingly enough, both returning world medalists dropped their series’.

Kylie Welker started the evening with a 4-1 victory over Guilford; however, Guilford battled back and won two straight matches, 2-1 and 7-1, to seize the world team spot.

In the deciding bout, the pair went into the break knotted at 1-1. Guilford took control of the bout early in the second period as she scored a takedown after an errant headlock attempt by Welker. Later in the period, Welker nearly had a takedown, but couldn’t return Guilford to the mat. As Guilford broke free from Welker, Welker attempted a shot, which was countered for a second takedown and a 5-1 lead. With about:30 seconds left in the contest, Welker attempted an inside trip, which was thwarted and led to another Guilford takedown. That 7-1 score held up for Guilford.

Guilford is now a two-time Senior World Team member. She made the 2022 team – the same year she earned a silver medal at the U23 World Championships.

Bassett stunned Woods with an 8-4 victory in their first match. In the second bout, Woods got on the board first as Bassett was cautioned for a singlet grab. Late in the period, Bassett got in on a leg attack and threw Woods out of the cylinder for a point of his - though Woods still led on criteria.

Once again, in the second period, Woods took an early shot and eventually secured a takedown and then transitioned into a gut wrench and a 5-1 lead. That did nothing to slow down Bassett, who quickly got in on a shot of his own. After another Bassett takedown, Woods needed to take injury time for something related to his knee.

The match resumed with about a minute and a half remaining and Bassett immediately took control, snapping and spinning for a takedown and a 7-5 lead. Shortly after, Bassett scored an insurance takedown with a sweep single, which led to the 9-5 final score.

Bassett has made his first Senior World Team. He already won a U20 world championship earlier this summer and is slated to compete with the U23 team, as well.

The final Final X matches are finally here! After long last, our 2026 Senior World Team will be finalized as two Final X series’ take place on Friday afternoon in Ohio’s Hilliard Davidson High School. These series have been delayed after injuries to returning world medalists. Initially, three series were supposed to take place on Friday; however, Bella Mir will not wrestle Kennedy Blades at 68 kg in women’s freestyle, giving Blades the Senior team spot.

That means there will only be two series’ - one in men’s and one in women’s freestyle. Today, we’ll discuss the men’s freestyle series between returning world bronze medalist Real Woods and U20 world champion Bo Bassett. Tomorrow, we'll preview the women's freestyle series between Kylie Welker and Dymond Guilford. 

65 kg Men’s Freestyle - Real Woods vs. Bo Bassett

This is the one that has everyone’s attention and was one of the most anticipated matchups of the entire Final X series.  Can the collegiate freshman Bo Bassett take out the returning world bronze medalist, Real Woods, to earn a spot on his first Senior world team? The biggest question regarding this series is in regards to Woods’ health. Woods was last in action at Real American Freestyle’s RAF 09 show on May 30th. It was he who needed their Final X series pushed back.

If Woods isn’t 100%, if his conditioning isn’t at an optimal level, Bassett is probably the worst matchup possible. He has pace for days and wears out high-quality opponents in top form, much less ones that might still be working back into shape. Conversely, at his best, Woods is the type of opponent that might be able to slow Bassett down and tie him up. Woods has a habit of doing this and making his foes wrestle his type of match.

While Woods was on the mend, Bassett won a spot on the U20 world team and crushed the field en route to a world title. His 8-2 win in the finals over Japan’s Takuto Osedo marked his closest match of the tournament. Before the U20 Trials, Bassett stayed sharp with three dominant wins in RAF - the last coming over 2016 Olympic gold medalist Vladimer Khinchegashvili.

Bassett has already started his freshman year at Virginia Tech and has been able to train with 2024 NCAA champion Caleb Henson and two-time world medalist James Green during his time in Blacksburg.

Woods had a decorated collegiate career at Stanford and Iowa, where he earned NCAA All-American honors on three occasions and made the 2023 NCAA finals. Just making the 2025 Senior World Team seemed improbable as Woods finished fourth at the 2025 US Open, losing two matches to Aden Valencia.

A couple of weeks later, Woods got revenge on Valencia, then beat Jesse Mendez and Brock Hardy to win the World Team Trials and earn a spot in Final X. At Final X, Woods swept a pair of close matches at the expense of Joey McKenna.

How they got here:

Bassett: Bassett did double duty at the US Open with a Senior title and a U20 win. For the Senior title run, Bassett staged an excellent comeback to take out Valencia in the quarterfinals, 11-10. There was no such resistance in the semis and finals, as he blew through Beau Bartlett and McKenna with 10-0 techs in each bout. Winning the Open put Bassett in Final X opposite Woods.

Woods: A bronze medal at the 2025 World Championships allowed Woods to skip the Open process and wait in Final X. At the World Championships, Woods fell in the Round of 16, but battled back with two repechage wins in order to wrestle for a medal. The second of the two repechage victories came over Sujeet Kalkal, a returning U23 world bronze medalist. Later that year, Kalkal won U23’s. For the bronze medal, Woods turned in a gritty, 3-1 performance over Canada’s Peiman Biabani.

One of the key takeaways from the 2026 U20 World Championships was the all-time great performance of the men’s freestyle team. All 10 team members came away with medals, and the United States cruised to a team title. It was the American team's best performance since ... we'll, last year! With five champions at the 2025 tournament, we could have made the argument in 2025 that that version of the U20 team was the best ever for us. A year later, that conversation is warranted once again.

So let’s do it, let’s go weight-by-weight and compare the 2025 team to this year’s version. How do you think a hypothetical dual would play out? Looking at the matchups themselves, there aren’t any matches that are slam dunks in favor of one particular wrestler.

2026 - Isaiah Cortez (Silver Medalist)

2025 - Anthony Knox (11th place)

Both of these wrestlers were Cornell recruits from the Class of 2025, so there’s a good chance that they tangled plenty of times while Knox was still in Ithaca. Based on the history and pedigree, you’d give Knox the edge head-to-head; however, Cortez clearly got the better results at the World Championships.

2026 - Aaron Seidel (World Champion)

2025 - Marcus Blaze (World Champion)

Marcus Blaze gets the edge here as he is our Senior Team representative and won the Trials process that included Aaron Seidel, though the pair did not meet. Seidel fell to Jax Forrest at the World Team Trials and Blaze defeated Forrest at Final X. Obviously, less relevant, Seidel did defeat Blaze for third place at the NCAA Championships, so there is that result in Seidel’s favor.

2026 - Bo Bassett (World Champion)

2025 - Luke Stanich (World Champion)

After watching Bo Bassett at the 2026 tournament, it’s hard to imagine picking anyone but Bo. At the same time, the reason Bassett wasn’t on the 2025 team was because of Luke Stanich, who beat him at the U20 Trials and the Open. It wasn’t like Bassett magically improved overnight from 2025 to 2026 either, he was already a U20 world bronze medalist from 2024, so it’s anyone’s guess.

2026 - Landon Robideau (Bronze Medalist)

2025 - PJ Duke (World Champion)

Once again, things are a bit convoluted here. PJ Duke won the 2025 world title and made the Senior and U23 teams later that year. He earned a bronze medal at U23’s, as well. I’m sure it’s probably hard to unsee Landon Robideau winning an NCAA title and beating Duke in the semifinals (I know, very controversially). Duke probably deserves the edge in freestyle, but there’s at least a discussion there.

2026 - Jayden James (Silver Medalist)

2025 - Ladarion Lockett (Fifth Place)

The placement for Lockett is a little deceiving, as he did match James with a silver finish in 2024. We at least have some recent and more relevant data between these two. James won a pair of close matches between the two in the Trials finals this May. It should be noted that Lockett beat James twice at the same tournament in 2025.

2026 - Ryan Burton (Bronze Medalist)

2025 - Will Henckel (Silver Medalist)

There are fewer recent common opponents or head-to-head opportunities to use with these two, compared to the other matchups in this hypothetical dual. Both Burton and Henckel lost close matches during their only World Championship setback. I tend to think Henckel’s Iranian opponent was probably better than the Japanese wrestler who defeated Burton. Henckel also has some solid results at the U23 and Senior level this year. Now, if you want to go back a few years, Burton did beat Henckel at Fargo in 2024.

This is another confusing one. Both Aeoden Sinclair and Max McEnelly won world titles with wins over opponents from Russia and Iran. Both had to pull out at least one close victory during their respective championship runs. McEnelly didn’t wrestle at the Open or Trials this year, but does have a recent RAF win over Bo Nickal. Sinclair has a high-quality RAF win over his own, over a returning world bronze medalist. Again, folkstyle makes this even more confusing. McEnelly won a 184 lb NCAA weight class that featured Sinclair. Though the two did not meet in Cleveland, Sinclair beat McEnelly during a regular season bout.

2026 - Jimmy Mastny (Bronze Medalist)

2025 - Connor Mirasola (Bronze Medalist)

This is another one that is hard to break down because of the lack of comparables between the two. Connor Mirasola was more experienced at the international level in 2025, as opposed to Mastny in 2026. Mirasola made the 2024 U20 world team, but did not medal. He also competed at the U20 Pan-American Championships. Mastny showed he could never be counted out, particularly in his comeback win in repechage over the Russian.

2026 - Michael Boyle (Gold Medalist)

2025 - Justin Rademacher (Gold Medalist)

This would pit the youngest member of the 2026 team (Boyle) against Rademacher, who already had two years of collegiate experience under his belt when he made the 2025 squad. Despite the difference in age and experience, Boyle was utterly dominant during his championship run. He teched in the finals and had two techs and a pin during his path to the gold medal match. Perhaps in the next year, we’ll see how Boyle fares against Senior-level competition.

2026 - Dreshaun Ross (Silver Medalist)

2025 - Cole Mirasola (Bronze Medalist)

We probably have to give Dreshaun Ross the edge here. He had a pretty impressive run to the finals and was very competitive with a tough opponent from Iran in the gold medal match. Mirasola’s only loss came via an 11-0 tech. Ross also has a size and length advantage that might make for a difficult stylistic match for Mirasola.

The three outstanding best-of-three series for 2026 Final X, presented by Kerberos Capital Management, will take place on Friday, Sept. 25, at Hilliard Davidson High School in the greater Columbus, Ohio, area.

First-round matches will start at 6 p.m. (ET), with round two starting at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at Hilliard Davidson Wildcat Gymnasium. If needed, third-round matches will commence 30 minutes after the conclusion of round two.

The wrestle-offs include the men’s freestyle 65 kg series, the women’s freestyle 68 kg series, and the women's freestyle 76 kg series. The winner of each of the series will represent the U.S. at the 2026 Senior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, this October.

At 65 kg in men’s freestyle, 2025 World bronze medalist Real Woods takes on two-time age-group World champion Bo Bassett, who just won the U20 World Championships. The 68 kg women’s freestyle series features 2024 Olympic silver medalist and 2025 World bronze medalist Kennedy Blades facing two-time age-group World Team member Isabella Mir. The women’s freestyle 76 kg series includes two-time World bronze medalist Kylie Welker battling 2022 World Team member Dymond Guilford.

In June, Woods, Blades and Welker each requested and received medical delays for their matchups, which were originally scheduled for June 19 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

The U20 World Championships are in the books. The tournament featured plenty of firsts and unusual facts: some that were very evident, others we needed to dig a little deeper to find. So, have some fun and use these as you analyze the tournament.

The United States earned medals in all ten weights in men’s freestyle. The last time anyone accomplished that feat was in 1988 when the Soviet Union did so.

Russia’s Ismail Khaniev was the only wrestler in the men’s freestyle competition to earn his second U20 world title.

In women’s freestyle, Everest Leydecker (55 kg) and Kajal Dhochak (India - 76 kg) both captured their second U20 world championship.

The Greco-Roman competition saw Aykhan Javadov (Azerbaijan - 60 kg) and Ali Ilyasov (Russia - 130 kg) both win their second U20 world gold medals.

Sakura Onishi (Japan - 62 kg/WFS) and Yehor Yakushenko (Ukraine - 97 kg/MGR) both won their third U20 world title.

The last women’s freestyle wrestler to win their third title was Amir Elor in 2023.

Kerem Kamal (Turkiye - 2019) was the most recent Greco wrestler to capture three U20 titles.

Alp Arslan Begenjov became Turkmenistan’s first multi-time U20 world medalist in men’s freestyle.

Darius Sas was Romania’s first U20 world medalist in men’s freestyle since Vasile Caras in 2014.

Isaiah Cortez earned a silver medal in men’s freestyle at 57 kg. He was also a silver medalist in Greco in 2024.

Sandro Kurashvili was Georgia’s first U20 world champion in men’s freestyle since Geno Petriashvili in 2014.

The US men’s freestyle team had at least four world champions for a second consecutive year (they had five in 2025).

Even though the US men's freestyle team was dominant - none were carryovers from 2025 and only Bo Bassett had Junior world experience (2024). 

Pennsylvania had a pair of medalists in men’s freestyle with Aaron Seidel (61 kg) and Bo Bassett (65 kg) both winning gold. The last time that Pennsylvania had two medalists was in 2008, when Quentin Wright and Mike Letts both won bronze.

With Michael Boyle’s gold medal at 97 kg, it marked the fourth straight year that an Ohio native captured a medal, the longest such active streak among states.

Jimmy Mastny earned a bronze medal at 92 kg. He became the first Illinois native to win a U20 world medal in men’s freestyle since Patrick McCaffrey in 2006.

Virginia Tech led the way from a college standpoint with two world champions (Seidel/Bassett) and a bronze medalist (Ryan Burton).

The 53 kg U20 women’s final featured an All-Pan-American matchup with Kaura Coles (Canada) defeating Alexa Alvarez-Valenzuela (Venezuela). The last time women from two Pan-American nations wrestled for a gold medal was in 2006 when Nicole Tyson (USA) defeated Diana Piza (Ecuador).

Coles was Canada’s first U20 world medalist since Ana Godinez Gonzales in 2019 and the first champion since Dorothy Yeats in 2013.

Even though Japan captured the women’s team title, China had more world medalists (7 to 6). All of Japan’s medalists were finalists.

Sara Rantonen became the first woman from Finland to earn a U20 world medal since Petra Olli won the third of her world medals in 2014.

California was without a world team member in women’s freestyle, which is huge considering its role as a traditional power.

Leydecker became only the fourth US woman to win multiple world titles.

Both the men’s and women’s U20 world champions at 65 kg earned bronze medals in 2024, but did not medal in 2025. (Bo Bassett and Margarita Salnazarian.

Azerbaijan had multiple medalists in women’s freestyle in back-to-back years for the first time since 2014-15.

Finland’s Paulie Perkioe captured a bronze medal in Greco at 97. It marked the first time that Finland had a U20 medalist in back-to-back years since 2017-18.

Arvin Khosravy became only the sixth three-time world team member during the last decade in Greco.

Action has wrapped up on the final day of a record-setting U20 World Championships for the US men’s freestyle team. The American squad had three wrestlers in the four remaining gold medal matches and one wrestling for bronze.

Of the three finalists, only Michael Boyle at 97 kg came away with the gold. Boyle and Rodion Sanakoev (Russia) ended the first period with the score knotted at one. Boyle turned up the heat and tallied a step-out followed by five takedowns. After each score, Boyle hustled back to the center of the mat as a tired Sanakoev dragged himself slowly back. Boyle finished things with an extremely quick finish after a high crotch and a 12-2 victory.

Boyle was the fourth American to capture a world title from the men’s freestyle team in 2026. He’s also only 17 years old, so he could get the opportunity to add additional medals.

Jayden James (74 kg) and Dreshaun Ross (125 kg) both made the finals but had to settle for silver medals. James held a late lead in a shootout with Japan’s Ariya Yoshida, but gave up a takedown at the final buzzer to lose, 13-12.

Ross got down to Iran’s Abolfazl Mohammad Nezhad by a 5-0 margin in the second period. He nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback with a takedown in the final :05 seconds, but was unable to get any exposure from a leg lace.

Ross’ Oklahoma State teammate, Landon Robideau, trailed Zalkarbek Tabaldiev (Kyrgyzstan) by a slim 1-0 margin at the break in their bronze-medal match at 70 kg. Robideau took the lead with a step-out point early in the final period. Shortly after, Tabaldiev was hit for a shot clock violation, and Robideau quickly earned another step-out to lead 3-1.

Robideau’s win gave the American team a medal at each of the ten weight classes. The last time that any country earned medals at every available weight class was 1988, when the Soviet Union did so. The American squad finished with a team title and 205 points. They outdistanced second-place Russia by 50 points.

The incredible showing for the United States men’s U20 freestyle team continued on Saturday. Another American earned a gold medal, while three of the four wrestlers whose tournament started this morning have locked up a place in the finals.

Facing Japan’s Takuto Osedo in the 65 kg gold medal match, Bo Bassett blew the match open in the second period, as he tends to do. The only point scored in the opening period was by Bassett on a shot clock violation. In the final period, Bassett got in on a leg attack but was exposed by Osedo. He ended up on top in the sequence and earned a point as well. Bassett took advantage of the sequence and turned Osedo once with a trapped-arm gut wrench twice before going out of bounds.

On the ensuing restart, Bassett was close to a takedown, but exposed Osedo and nearly had a fall. For the remaining minute plus, Bassett held position and hand fought, never letting his Japanese opponent come close to scoring. The final score ended up 8-2 in Bassett’s favor.

This was the only match of the tournament for Bassett that went into the second period. In his run-up to the finals, Bassett had two first-period falls and two first-period techs.

The win gives Bassett his second U20 world medal - he earned a bronze in 2024. It’s his second age group world title after winning U17’s in 2021.

Also in the finals for the Americans on Saturday was Isaiah Cortez at 57 kg. Cortez fell 8-4 to Russia’s Magomed Magomedov. Cortez settled for silver. It is his second U20 world medal; he also took silver in 2024 in Greco.

At 92 kg, Jimmy Mastny, an Iowa State recruit who is a senior in high school, won a pair of odd matches in contrasting fashion. His repechage win came via tech, but he compiled 22 points in the process. For the bronze medal, Mastny found himself trailing Beibarys Yergali (Kazakhstan) 2-1 with under :20 remaining in the bout. In that time, Mastny was able to get a single leg and convert for a takedown with less than five seconds to spare.

Also claiming a bronze medal on Saturday was Virginia Tech’s Ryan Burton at 79 kg. In the early stages of his medal round match with Azerbaijan’s Eljan Ismayilzada, Burton found himself trailing after Ismayilzada hit an arm throw for four points.

That was the only offense that the Azeri wrestler was able to muster as Burton pulled away in the second period. Burton ended the scoring with four points of his own, as he hit a Metzger out of bounds. That made the score 10-4, which is how the match ended.

With Bassett and Burton’s wins, it gives Virginia Tech two world champions (along with Aaron Seidel) and a bronze medalist.

Of the final group of Americans who started the tournaments on Saturday, three of the four are in the finals tomorrow. Jayden James (74 kg), Michael Boyle (97 kg), and Dreshaun Ross (125 kg) will all wrestle for gold. Landon Robideau advanced to the semifinals but suffered a loss and drops into a bronze medal match. Should Robideau win, it would mean that the entire men’s freestyle team earned a medal.

Heading into Sunday’s repechage and medal round matches, the US team has already clinched the team title. They hold a 69-point advantage over second-place Russia (195 to 126).

Thursday at the U20 World Championships was the best day thus far for the American contingent. Our first gold medal at the event made a bit of national history. Plus, three American women are still in contention for bronze medals. And, by the way, the men’s freestyle team took the match and both of our entries on the day punched their tickets to the finals.

In the 55 kg women’s freestyle finals, Everest Leydecker trailed Japan’s Nana Kozuka, 2-1. Early in the second stanza, Leydecker found a leg and converted a takedown. Shortly thereafter, she managed to get an exposure and, for the second time in this tournament, found her opponent on her back in an unorthodox manner. After an extended period with Kozuka fighting to avoid a fall, Leydecker finally got to a more normal position and secured the fall at 5:14.

This gives Leydecker gold medals at the U20 World Championships in back-to-back years. She is one of only four American women with multiple U20 titles.

Leydecker is also slated to compete at the U23 and Senior World Championships later this year.

Competing in repechage on Thursday was Bella Williams at 62 kg. She fell in her only match of the day 12-0 to Hungary’s Barbara Bager.

Also, Piper Fowler lost a narrow 6-5 decision to Turkiye’s Elmira Yasin in a bronze medal match and will settle for fifth place.

Karlee Brooks (57 kg) and Taina Fernandez (68 kg) have qualified for repechage and will need to win two matches on Friday to secure a bronze medal. Since Caleb Graber(59 kg) advanced to the semifinals before a loss on criteria to Japan’s Sae Noguchi, she will drop down into a bronze medal bout.

Two members of the men’s freestyle squad took the mat on Thursday and both advanced to a gold medal matchup under different circumstances.

Aaron Seidel seemingly had one of the toughest draws from the American men’s squad. Right off the bat, he had recruiting U20 world silver medalist Ahora Khateri of Iran. Technically, Khateri put up the biggest fight of the day for Seidel; however, he fell via tech fall just like the other three opponents that the Virginia Tech All-American faced. Seidel tallied a fall and three techs, where he outscored the opposition 38-6.

Seidel advances to tangle with Kazakhstan’s Bekassyl Assambek for the 61 kg gold medal. Assambek is the Asian U20 champion and a past U17 world bronze medalist.

Joining Seidel in tomorrow’s finals is Missouri All-American Aeoden Sinclair at 86 kg. Sinclair pulled off some second-period heroics in his semifinal win over Japan’s Natsura Okazawa. Facing a 6-0 deficit after one period, Sinclair wore down his Japanese opponent and tallied three takedowns and a step out point to win, 7-6.

Sinclair will take on Russia’s Akhmad Mukutov in tomorrow’s gold medal match.

The first set of medals were handed out in freestyle at the U20 World Championships in women’s freestyle on Thursday. One American woman was awarded her hardware, while another clinched a medal of her own, a third will compete for the bronze on Thursday, and finally, one will be in repechage.

Returning U20 world champion Everest Leydecker got her tournament started today and has advanced to the finals for a second straight year.

In her first bout of the tournament, Leydecker was able to pin Hansika Lamba of India while attempting a lace leg, which was as unusual as it sounds on paper. In the two bouts that followed, Leydecker blanked both of her opponents. A 10-0 tech over Belarus’ Valeriya Mikitscih and an 8-0 victory over China’s Meilin Zhou in the semis.

For the gold medal at 55 kg, Leydecker will square off against Japan’s Nana Kozuka. Kozuka was a U17 world silver medalist in 2024 - losing to Canada’s Kaura Coles in the championship match, by fall.

Also advancing to the semifinals on Wednesday was Iowa State’s Piper Fowler at 76 kg. Fowler posted two wins via tech fall, before dropping one against India’s Kajal Dhochak, 6-0 in the semis. Dhochak is the reigning world champion at the weight and defeated American Jasmine Robinson, 13-6, in the 2025 tournament.

Fowler will meet the winner of the Turkish and Japanese wrestlers in repechage for a bronze medal.

Bella Williams, at 62 kg, will also compete for a bronze medal on Thursday.

Speaking of bronze medals, two American women competed in bronze medal bouts earlier today. Morgan Turner prevailed 11-0 in her match at 50 kg. Turner faced Kayla Batres of Guatemala, who goes to high school in the United States at Connecticut’s Greens Farms Academy.

With the win, Turner now has four medals at the age group level. Her resume already featured two U17 world championships and a bronze. This is her first at the U20 division. She’ll also represent the United States at the U23 and Senior World Championships.

Taylor Whiting, at 53 kg, was the other American in a medal round match. Whiting won a quick repechage match against India’s Muskan, after converting a single leg and four ankle laces. In the bronze medal match, Whiting tried to come out quickly and get another early takedown; however, her offensive attack was stuffed, China’s Yuxuan Li, spun for a takedown and ended things after four gut wrenches.

On Thursday, the remainder of the women’s freestyle wrestlers will start their tournaments (57/59/68 kg). The men’s freestyle team will also take the mat for the first time in two weights (61/86 kg).

Earlier today, brackets were released for the men’s freestyle portion of the 2026 U20 World Championships. Now, each wrestler knows their respective path to a world title. The pairings, particularly at the age group level, can be extremely unpredictable. It’s possible for the two best wrestlers in the bracket to meet in the Round of 32. At 61 kg, that might actually be the case. Another American team member could have a wrestler from his home state in round two.

The third day of the U20 World Championships, from Bratislava, Slovakia, featured the final medal matches in Greco-Roman and the first session of women’s freestyle bouts. Although no American wrestlers came away with medals, two women are in position to do so on Wednesday.

Morgan Turner (50 kg) and Taylor Whiting (53 kg) each need a win during tomorrow morning’s repechage round and another in the bronze medal match to claim hardware.

The two-time U17 world champion, Turner, posted a win in the Round of 16 despite giving up the first points. India’s Parveen countered a Turner shot for the opening takedown and later scored two points from exposure after a headlock. Turner maneuvered out of the headlock and managed to turn the situation to a cradle of her own. She never relinquished the position and secured a fall in 1:28.

In her next bout, Turner was beaten by Japan’s Yuu Katsume, 11-0. Katsume is a 2024 U17 world champion. During that run, she also teched Turner in the semifinals. It was the only appearance for Turner at the U17 World Championships without a gold medal.

Turner will have to wait and see who her opponent is after a round of repechage action.

Whiting’s first bout of the tournament came in the Round of 16 against Canada’s Kaura Coles. Coles was up 10-1 when she pinned Whiting in the second period. The Canadian needed to stage a remarkable semifinal comeback against China’s Yuxuan Li in order to pull Whiting back into repechage. Coles trailed 7-4 after one period, but reeled off 10 unanswered points in the second to win, 14-7.

Coles’ win sets up a repechage match tomorrow morning for Whiting against India’s Muskan. When Muskan faced Coles, she only lost via a 9-7 margin.

In Greco-Roman, Manny Saldate (60 kg) and Arvin Khosravy (82 kg) both started their tournaments on Tuesday, but fell in their first match. Both have been eliminated from medal contention.

The lone Greco-Roman wrestler in the repechage rounds on Tuesday was Amryn Nutter at 67 kg. Nutter posted a 5-2 win over Germany’s Sebastian Wagner to advance to the second set of repechage matches. Unfortunately, that’s where his tournament would come to an end. Nutter suffered a 1-1 loss to Egypt’s Mohamed Abdelrehim in a match in which all the scoring came via passivity points. Abdelrehim prevailed because his was the final score.

Monday at the U20 World Championships saw the first set of medals awarded and the American squad grabbed one in Greco-Roman competition. Aidan Squier posted three wins on the day to collect a bronze medal. He advanced to the medal round after a tech and a 6-4 victory in the morning’s repechage rounds.

In the bronze medal bout, facing Romania’s Gabriel Stan, Squier found himself in a 6-0 hole after the opening stanza. Within the first minute of the second period, Squier threw Stan in a body lock for four points and put himself right back in the match. Later in the second, Squier pulled within a point after a passivity call on Stan. In the ensuing par terre restart, Squier got Stan off the mat and threw him outside of the cylinder. Stan never exposed himself, but did step out, giving Squier a point to knot the bout at six points.

The four-point throw earlier in the second period gave Squier a lead on criteria, one he would not relinquish. At times, Stan nearly gained a step out point; however, Squier was deftly able to circle back towards the center of the mat and avoid surrendering any points.

Squier’s win makes him the first, and only, American medalist of the event thus far.

This is a positive sign for the American Greco team as they did not earn a medal in 2025, after getting three in 2024.

From the group whose tournament started on Monday, Amryn Nutter at 67 kg has qualified for repechage on Tuesday. He’ll face Sebastian Wagner of Germany and needs three wins to take home the bronze.

Tuesday’s competition will feature the final two Greco-Roman weights (60 kg and 82 kg), along with the first group of women’s freestyle weights (50 kg, 53 kg, and 72 kg).

Yesterday, USA Wrestling released new procedures regarding qualification for the 2027 World Team Trials with a focus on the Olympic weights. The changes were rather staggering and will greatly alter the competition and preparation schedule for athletes seeking to qualify for those teams.

After reading each of the procedures (as they vary from style to style), here are five takeaways we’ve identified from the changes.

1. There will be no Final X in 2027

One of the glaring changes to the way that business has been conducted regarding non-Olympic years since 2018. In 2018, Final X served as the final, best-of-three wrestle-off for slots on the world team. Some pros for this were that it created a de facto freestyle (and sometimes Greco) season with the US Open, the World Team Trials, culminating in Final X. Final X has become a must-see event and is an easy promotion for us media-types, because we know the participants for at least a month ahead of time. The other side of the coin is that it draws on the world team process.

The new changes will streamline the process and give us ample time to determine a world team and plan any competitions between April and the 2027 World Championships (September 11-19 in Las Vegas).

I have mixed feelings. Final X has become a tentpole event on the American wrestling calendar. It’s an event and a great event. There have been different variations of Final X as it has evolved, but generally, it has the feel of something special. USA Wrestling has improved the feel of the US Open finals, but it still is an event held in conjunction with 10 other age-group tournaments.

In USAW’s release, there was nothing regarding the future of Final X, so I suppose it could return in 2029, but I’m skeptical.

2. The ability to compete at Olympic and non-Olympic weights

One gripe that I’ve heard over the years regarding Final X and having all of our world team wrestle-offs conducted at once is that there isn’t the ability for someone who lost somewhere along the way to move up or down and make the world team at a different weight.

This could happen with the new system. It’s more in line with what happens during an Olympic year. Qualifiers at non-Olympic weights move up or down to fit within those six weights for the Trials. A few months later, there is a trials for non-Olympic weights and athletes go back to their ideal weights (or change weights if they lost at Final X).

Typically our men’s and women’s freestyle teams have been stacked at just about every single weight, so it’s hard to imagine them becoming significantly stronger; however, there’s a slight chance that could happen.

Since our men’s freestyle team is established at all of the non-Olympic weights (Marcus Blaze - 61 kg, Zain Retherford - 70 kg, Levi Haines - 79 kg, and Trent Hidlay - 92 kg), we can use them as an example. At the end of the day, I’m not sure that anyone bumps up or down and makes a stronger team than any of those four; however, all four could move to an Olympic weight in April and, if they don’t make the team, wrestle-off and win those seats anyways.

As a fan, this could be fun and interesting to watch. It also adds the element of imperfection of weights that we see in Olympic years. Kyle Dake might be able to beat Trent Hidlay, who is cutting significant weight at 86 kg, but if the two meet at 92 kg, does Dake have enough horsepower for Hidlay?

3. The deadline to reschedule a series moves up significantly

Final X 2026 took place in mid-June, and we still do not have world team qualifiers at one men’s freestyle weight and two women’s weights. Each series featured returning world medalists who followed the proper procedures and requested a delayed wrestle-off due to an injury. Word is that all three will late place in late September - about a month out for the World Championships.

I assume that USAW saw this happening and didn’t want such a scenario in the future. In the guidelines for 2027, wrestle-offs must be held by July 31st. I think that’s probably a reasonable solution.

4. Most of the qualification has already taken place

Since the process to make the Senior World Team has been significantly streamlined, most of the qualification avenues have already taken place. The 2027 Trials will take place at the same time the US Open is typically held, so that’s one event that typically has been used to build the field. The 2026 US Open results will be used to qualify the majority of competitors. In all three styles, a top-seven finish at the 2026 Open gets you into the 2027 Trials.

There are a few ways to qualify going forward. Some might vary slightly depending on the style, but a top-three finish at the Bill Farrell (by a US athlete) gets you in. A gold medal at a UWW-sanctioned event does it, as well. In men’s and women’s freestyle, medaling at a Ranking Series event works. There are also different methods to qualify through the NCAA Tournament - each varies from the three styles. Finally, there will be a Last Chance Qualifier, in which only the champion moves to the Trials.

Medalists from the 2026 World Championships will automatically advance to the finals of the Trials at Olympic weights, provided they compete at the same weight in which they medaled.

5. USAW wants the best possible teams for 2027 and Olympic Qualification

So why the changes? USAW wants to put its best foot forward and it’s two-fold. As mentioned earlier, the 2027 Senior World Championships will take place on American soil for the first time in 12 years. Whenever you’re hosting an event of this magnitude, the home team always wants to put on the best show possible.

In conjunction with that thought, the 2027 World Championships are the first qualifying event for the 2028 Olympic Games (also in America - Los Angeles). In a change from 2024’s procedures, only the medalists from 2027 will punch their tickets (or their countries) to the Olympic Games. Trying to qualify through alternative methods can be very risky and it’s not a path that anyone wants to go down.

Again, I don’t know if this will generate a “better” team than we would have produced under the old, but perhaps a shorter and less rigorous qualification process will lead to less of a grind for the athletes and more recovery/preparation time, which could impact results in a positive way.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – USA Wrestling has approved and posted its procedures to determine the Senior World Team in the 18 Olympic weight classes for the 2027 season.

A distinct set of procedures is established for each Olympic discipline—men’s freestyle, women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman. These procedures were developed and approved by the Sport Committee for each discipline, then received final approval from the USA Wrestling Board of Directors.

All three Olympic disciplines will determine their Senior World Team in the Olympic weight classes—six weights per discipline—at the U.S. Open Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, in April 2027. This is a significant procedural update from the 2026 Senior World Team selection process.

Senior-level athletes and coaches in these disciplines are asked to review the procedures closely and follow up with USA Wrestling with any clarifying questions.

Looking through the results for the American contingent at the U17 World Championships, well, it was a mixed bag. The women’s team won the second team title in the program’s history and finished with four champions and eight medalists. The Greco squad had one of its better showings since the tournament was reinstated in 2011. Prior to this tournament, they never had two champions in the same year. With Rylen Wax’s title at 45 kg, the Greco program has produced champions in three of the last four tournaments.

The men’s freestyle team, on the other hand, featured results that were far below the lofty standards that we’ve been accustomed to seeing. For the first time since the tournament was brought back, the Americans came home without a gold medal. They also finished with only two medalists, total.

Action on Saturday at the 2026 U17 World Championships wrapped up with two Americans advancing to the gold-medal finals in men’s freestyle. Another member is in a bronze medal match tomorrow.

Earlier this week, Rylen Wax earned a U17 world title in Greco-Roman. Now, he’s looking to double up as he locked up a spot in tomorrow’s 45 kg gold medal match.

Wax’s most difficult match didn’t come in the semifinals - he cruised there with a 9-0 win, but the quarterfinals proved to be a bit more challenging. Leading Kazakhstan’s Aryn Zhanat 3-1 at the break, Wax was aggressive off the whistle and countered for four points by Zhanat, taking a 5-3 lead.

A step-out point for Wax closed the deficit to a single point. He would take the lead shortly thereafter with a takedown after a low single leg. Holding onto a one-point lead, Wax was able to fend off a dangerous leg attack from Zhanat and exposed the Kazakh wrestler for another two points and a three-point cushion. Zhanat got a reversal in the closing seconds, but couldn’t threaten any further, as Wax held on to win, 8-6.

Standing between Wax and another gold medal is Puerto Rico’s Nelson Villafane. Though Villafane represents Puerto Rico, he hails from Pennsylvania.

The second American to make the finals on Saturday was Salah Tsarni at 92 kg. Tsarni ripped through his bracket, defeating wrestler-after-wrestler from traditional powers. He downed opponents from Ukraine, Iran, Japan, and India. Not only did Tsarni get his hand raised four times, but he did so impressively. He posted three tech falls without surrendering a point and got a fall, as well.

Speaking of opponents from power countries, that theme continues in the gold medal match as Tsarni will square off with Russia’s Abdurazak Shabanov.

Also in the medal hunt is Camryn Howard at 71 kg. He notched a win in the opening round before falling to Iran’s Reza Shamsipourhajivand, 9-1. Howard will face Uzbekistan’s Jaloliddin Djalalov in the first round of repechage. He would need three wins to clinch a bronze medal.

Two American wrestlers from the first day of action took the mat and competed in bronze medal matches. Both Kooper Deputy (48 kg) and Chase Karenbauer (55 kg) were blanked in their bronze medal bout and finished in fifth place.

Tomorrow’s repechage and medal round matches will mark the conclusion of the 2026 U17 World Championships.

History was made on Friday in Baku, Azerbaijan, as the United States U17 women’s freestyle team captured its second team title in the history of the event. Also, Taina Fernandez joined an elite group of three-time U17 world champions.

In the final match of the women’s tournament, Fernandez closed out the tournament in style. Just like her previous three opponents, Turkiye’s Kiymet Tezcan did not make it out of the first period in their 69 kg gold medal match. Fernandez and Tezcan spent the bulk of the 1:26 of mat time hand fighting and getting a feel for one another. Once Fernandez saw an opportunity, she seized it with a leg attack.

Fernandez never let go of Tezcan’s leg and found herself in a perfect position for a cradle. The official only needed a few seconds after the cradle was applied to call for the fall.

With that, Fernandez got her third title in dominant fashion. All four of her bouts in this tournament ended via first-period falls and her total mat time was less than five minutes combined.

Fernandez previously won gold medals at the 2024 and 2025 U17 World Championships at 61 kg.

The third U17 world title puts Fernandez into elite company. She is only the fourth wrestler to win three U17 gold medals and the first non-Japanese wrestler to accomplish the feat.

Fernandez wasn’t the only American to cruise in the world finals - at 53 kg, Marlee Solomon did so to claim a title of her own.

Solomon and India’s Akshara were scoreless for most of the opening period, that is until Solomon got into a front headlock position and hustled to a takedown. During the same sequence, Solomon locked up an arm bar and used it to expose her opponent twice, taking a 6-0 lead into the break.

After the break, Solomon kept the pressure on and got in deep on a sweep single. As she was attempting to finish at the edge of the mat, Akshara turned into her and Solomon drove her to her back for four points, ending the bout via technical superiority. The Indian corner challenged the sequence, but lost, making the final score, 11-0

With Solomon and Fernandez winning gold medals, the women’s team finished the tournament with four world champions.

That wasn’t it for the women either, as Sophia Valdez (40 kg) and Madison Healey (46 kg) both dominated in bronze medal matches. For Healey, it was her second consecutive year with a U17 medal.

In addition, Landri Von Gonten advanced to the gold medal match at 61 kg. She ran into Turkiye’s Ozdenur Ozmez and fell via tech, 10-0. Von Gonten had to settle for a silver medal.

All in all, eight of the ten members of the women’s team will come home with hardware. Four golds, one silver, and three bronze medals. The United States (167 points) finished ahead of second-place India (132) and Japan (126) to win its first title since 2021.

While the US women finished their tournament on Friday, the men’s freestyle competition got underway with five weights.

It was a bit of a rough day for the men’s freestyle team as only Chase Karenbauer, at 55 kg, advanced to the semifinals. In the semis, Karenbauer tangled with Colombia’s Jovanni Tovar - who wrestles in high school in the United States. After a challenge went against a Karenbauer takedown, it was all Tovar, who ended the bout in the opening period, 10-0.

Karenbauer drops into a bronze medal match and will have to await an opponent to emerge from repechage. There will be two rounds of competition before the medal round matches.

The only other American from this group still in medal contention is Kooper Deputy at 48 kg. Deputy won a match before falling to an Indian opponent in the quarterfinals. He’ll need two wins to come home with a bronze medal.

Competition in the Greco-Roman discipline wrapped up on Wednesday at the U17 World Championships and the American team finished in style. In addition, the women’s freestyle tournament got underway. All five women who took the mat for the American squad are still in medal contention, with a pair earning a finals berth. 

Focusing on the Greco action, the 45 kg representative, Rylen Wax, fell behind Azerbaijan’s Ali Javadli 5-0 within the first minute of their gold medal matchup. Despite the early deficit, Wax maintained his composure and battled back in a big way. From the opening whistle in the second period, Wax was high energy and controlled the center of the mat. As a result, Javad was called for passivity and Wax was given a point and allowed to work from par terre. 

On the ensuing restart from par terre, Wax locked up a trapped-arm gut wrench and turned Javadli six times to suddenly end the match via 13-5 tech. 

Wax’s World Championship run is not done. He’ll represent the United States in freestyle, as well. 

With Wax’s win, the US U17 Greco-Roman team has had world champions in three of the last four years. He is also the first American to win a Greco medal at the lightest weight class since Cade Olivas took bronze in 2013. Wax and Bruno Pallone (silver) became the first American teammates to make the U17 Greco world finals since the tournament was reinstated in 2011. 

The only other Greco wrestler in action on Wednesday was Will Etu at 92 kg. Etu gave up a late takedown to Iran’s Amirreza Mehritalarposhti to lose 4-3 in his repechage bout. 

The women’s freestyle team got off to a great start with Epenesa Elison (57 kg) and Kaili Manuel (72 kg) both making Thursday’s gold medal match. Neither is a stranger to the world stage. Elison was a silver medalist at this tournament last year and Manuel was on the 2024 squad, but did not medal. 

Elison’s first match proved to be her toughest and was the only that went the full six minutes. She defeated former U15 Asian champion Rion Suzuki, 8-2. From there, Elison cruised to the finals with two techs and a first period fall. 

For the gold medal, Elison will face India’s Nikita Sehrawat. 

Manuel got to the finals on the strength of a win over an Indian opponent. She jumped out to a 7-0 lead on Garima and was able to withstand a late surge to prevail, 7-5. 

Suzannah Lundy (43 kg), Isla Silva (49 kg), Eve Skrocki (65 kg), are all alive in repechage. Lundy and Silva both will need to win two matches to earn a bronze medal. Skrocki will need to win three.

The first medals were awarded on Tuesday at the U17 World Championships and the American Greco-Roman squad came away with a silver medal, put another wrestler in the finals, and has one more in Wednesday’s repechage.

The lone American in a gold medal match on Tuesday, Bruno Pallone, fell in the 110 kg finals. Pallone fell via a 14-5 tech to Ukraine’s Tymofii Prykhodko. The American trailed 6-1 after one period; however, he pulled within one point early in the second period after bear-hugging Prykhodko to his back for four points.

While Pallone was working to take the lead, it was Prykhodko who scored next with a four-point throw from an over/under lock. Pallone continued to fight; however, Prykhodko squeezed him to his back for another four-point move, which pushed the bout into technical superiority territory.

Pallone had to settle for the silver medal, but is the first American heavyweight since Cohlton Schultz in 2017 to medal in Greco at the U17 World Championships.

The American team locked up a second medal as Pallone’s bookend, 45 kg’er Rylen Wax, made the finals at 45 kg. The key sequence in Wax’s semifinal matchup versus Uzbekistan’s Afruzbek Ibragimov took place in the first period after Wax was deemed to be passive and Ibragimov was allowed to work from par terre. As Ibragimov was looking to score with a gut wrench, Wax deftly stepped over the hold for a reverse, tying the match at one.

In the second period, Ibragimov was called for passivity, giving Wax a 2-1 advantage. The pair fought for position for the remainder of the bout to no avail, giving Wax the win.

Wax will face Azerbaijan’s Ali Javadli in tomorrow’s gold medal match. Javadli advanced to the finals with 9-0 techs in each of his first two matches, before getting a forfeit in the semis.

The other American who will wrestle for a medal on Wednesday is Virginia recruit Will Etu at 92 kg. Etu posted a :24 second fall in the Round of 16 before falling to Ukraine’s Hlib Yevsieiev in the quarterfinals. Yevsieiev won via tech in the semifinals, pulling Etu into repechage. He’ll face the winner between Iran’s Amirreza Mehritalarposhti and Azerbaijan’s Zohrab Safarov. Etu will have to win two matches to come home with hardware.

From the first group of Greco participants, Ivan Ivanov competed in a bronze medal match at 80 kg on Tuesday and came up short. Though he held a 4-3 lead at the end of the first period, Ivanov fell to Uzbekistan’s Abdulaziz Kholmirzaev, 12-4.

Ivanov got in position to wrestle for a bronze medal after winning two repechage bouts, one via tech and another by fall.

Arav Pandey (48 kg) and Corey Brown (55 kg) both qualified for repechage, but neither was able to advance to a bronze medal match. Brown did earn a fall in his first match but was defeated in the second repechage round by Romania’s Vlad Trip, 3-1.

However tomorrow’s matches play out, this is a very positive sign for the Greco program. The American squad will come away with multiple medals for the third straight year and they have multiple finalists for the first time since the tournament was reinstated in 2011.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The U.S. lineup in each Olympic discipline has been determined for the 2026 Galaxy U23 World Championships being held at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, this October.

Leading the charge for Team USA is 2024 Olympic champion and two-time Senior World champion Amit Elor, who holds the women’s freestyle 72 kg spot. The 22-year-old Elor is a five-time age-group World champion with two U23 World titles to her credit. She is one of seven 2026 Senior World Team members committed to the U23 Worlds.

In addition to Elor, Senior World Team members confirmed to compete in Las Vegas include Morgan Turner (50 kg), Cristelle Rodriguez (53 kg), Everest Leydecker (55 kg) and Adaugo Nwachukwu (62 kg) in women’s freestyle, plus Otto Black (67 kg) and Joel Adams (77 kg) in Greco-Roman. Every member of this group has medaled at a past age-group World Championships at least once, with five being an age-group World champion.

2025 U23 World champions Kylie Welker (WFS, 76 kg) and Luke Lilledahl (MFS, 57 kg) are back for another run in this age division. Welker won gold at the past two U23 World Championships, while also securing back-to-back bronze medals at the Senior World Championships in 2024 and 2025. Lilledahl is a three-time age-group World champion, winning gold at the U17, U20 and U23 levels, and is a five-time age-group World medalist. Both individuals were NCAA champions in 2026, Welker at Iowa and Lilledahl at Penn State.

Nine members of last year’s U23 World Team return to the fold—Lilledahl in men’s freestyle, Nwachukwu, Rodriguez, Welker and Alexis Janiak (59 kg) in women’s freestyle, and Otto Black, Kenneth Crosby (55 kg), Max Black (60 kg) and Aden Attao (130 kg) in Greco-Roman. Janiak and Otto Black were U23 World bronze medalists last year in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Five more age-group World medalists landed a spot on the men’s freestyle roster—2025 U17 World champion Jayden James (74 kg), 2021 U17 World champion and 2024 U20 World bronze medalist Bo Bassett (65 kg), 2025 U20 World champion and 2024 U20 World bronze medalist Justin Rademacher (97 kg), 2023 U20 World bronze medalist Matthew Singleton (79 kg) and 2022 U17 World bronze medalist (in Greco-Roman) Coby Merrill (125 kg).

The complete U.S. lineup in each Olympic discipline is available below. Notably, the women’s freestyle 68 kg spot remains undetermined, pending the results of the Final X Wrestle-Off between 2024 Olympic silver medalist Kennedy Blades and two-time age-group World Team member Isabella Mir. Both Blades and Mir are U23 age-eligible, and it is expected that one of the two will claim the U23 World Team berth.

Each U23 World Team member earned their place on the U.S. roster through style-specific team selection procedures, which are outlined on the USA Wrestling Team Selection Criteria page of TheMat.com.

The Galaxy U23 World Championships span seven days of competition—Greco-Roman kicks off the event and will compete October 12-14, Women’s freestyle will follow October 14-16, and men’s freestyle wraps things up October 16-18. Wrestling begins at 10:30 a.m. local time each day. A daily schedule of events is available below.

The U17 World Championships kicked off today with Greco-Roman leading the way. The American contingent had a very respectable day with one wrestler advancing to Tuesday’s gold medal match and three others still alive in repechage. Only one American was eliminated from medal contention on Monday.

Heavyweight Bruno Pallone of Montana led the way for the US team and will wrestle for the gold medal at 110 kg after a dominating Monday. Pallone’s day started with a forfeit and then he reeled off techs against Belarus’ Yahor Savich in the Round of 16 and Armenia’s Khachik Khachatryan in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Pallone held a 6-1 lead on Andrej Simic of Serbia at the break. Early in the second period, Simic tossed Pallone to his back for four points and was right back in the thick of things, trailing by a point, 6-5. Initially, the points were awarded to Pallone; however, after a review, the sequence was changed to Simic’s favor.

Pallone blew the match open after the next restart with two exposures before tilting and then pinning Simic.

In the gold medal match, Pallone will face Ukraine’s Tymofii Prykhodko. The Ukrainian made the finals after one-point wins over an Iranian in the quarters and a Russian in the semis.

Arav Pandey (48 kg), Corey Brown (55 kg), and Ivan Ivanov (80 kg) are still able to earn bronze medals if they can go unbeaten through tomorrow’s repechage. Brown and Ivanov will need to win three matches to take bronze, while Pandey will need two.

The remainder of the Greco-Roman team will get their tournament underway tomorrow.

The 2026 U17 World Championships got underway this morning. As usual, the American squad has tons of talent and hopefully should come home with a boatload of medals. Last year, 17 American wrestlers returned with hardware and at least three in each style. Those 17 wrestlers added their names to the list of U17 world medalist from the USA.
