Bucknell cruises to 35-3 victory at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Bucknell wrestling team cruised to a 35-3 victory over Harvard on Saturday afternoon at the Malkin Athletic Center.

The Bison (3-5, 1-2 EIWA) won nine of 10 bouts, scoring bonus points in three of them, to spoil the Crimson's (0-3, 0-1 EIWA) home and EIWA opener. For Bucknell, Zach Hartman, who was ranked as high as eighth nationally at 157 pounds, pinned his second-straight opponent while Brandon Stokes put an exclamation mark on a commanding team effort with a pin in the heavyweight finale.

In addition, Drew Phipps (197) scored an impressive 16-1 technical fall over Cole Bateman. In the final frame, Phipps registered eight points on a takedown and six back points; he racked up a staggering 5:13 of riding time overall.

By pulling out single-point victories, the Campbell twins gave the Bison early momentum. At 125 pounds, Jakob Campbell edged Nolan Hellickson, 5-4, on his escape at the start of the third period; with that win, Campbell remained unbeaten in dual action at 5-0 and improved to 10-4 on the season.

David Campbell followed up his twin's victory with a 5-4 decision of his own, using a last-second takedown to sneak past Lukus Stricker. Decisive decisions by Joey Gould (141) and Matthew Kolonia (149) pushed Bucknell's advantage up to 12-0 entering Hartman's 157-pound bout with Hunter Ladnier.

Late in the second period, Hartman had fallen into a 5-1 hole; he erased his disadvantage with two-straight takedowns and then pinned Ladnier at the 6:32 mark to extend the Bison's edge to 18-0. The freshman, who was ranked eighth by both Intermat and The Open Mat, is now 15-4 on the season, including an unbeaten 11-0 against unranked grapplers.

Decisions by D.J. Hollingshead (165) and Kyle Inlander (184), sandwiched around a tie-breaker loss by Frankie Guida, Jr. (174) in his 2018-19 dual debut, brought the score to 24-3. With the team victory already assured, Phipps and Stokes won in dominating fashion. Stokes's pin of Evan Callahan came at the 5:39 mark, with Stokes taking advantage of starting the third period on top to flip Callahan and earn six points.

Bucknell is in action again tonight, squaring off with Brown at 7 p.m. in Providence, R.I.
