After four bouts the Pack trailed 9-3, but NC State reeled off four straight wins, including those two pins, to clinch the dual with two bouts left.

The dual started at 157 pounds, and ODU won three of the first four bouts to take a 9-3 lead. The Pack’s win was at 174 pounds, as Pete Renda won 2-1.

NC State then won four straight bouts and clinched the road win with two matches still left.

At 197 pounds, freshman Michael Boykin took his bout into extra time, and came away with a 4-2 win to start the Pack’s stretch. Defending NCAA champion Nick Gwiazdowski improved to a perfect 24-0 on the season as his second period pin put the Pack ahead for good at 12-9 after six bouts. The pin was Gwiazdowski’s 10th of the season, and his third straight.

At 125 pounds, redshirt senior Joe DeAngelo pitched a shutout with a 4-0 win. DeAngelo has now won three straight and eight of his last nine overall. Freshman Bryce Meredith returned to the Pack’s lineup at 133 pounds, and scored a pin just 1:06 into his match to seal the Pack’s win.

The Pack has now won three straight duals and seven of its last eight dating back to early January. NC State’s schedule doesn’t get any easier after its upset at #17 ODU, as NC State’s final four duals are all against top-20 foes.

Popolizio’s Perspective: “Overall a great performance from our guys. Coming out with two pins in a close dual like this was a critical point of the dual that put us over the top. ODU’s past performances and national ranking shows they are a great team, so this is a very good team win for us on the road. Getting a win tonight gives us the momentum we need going into the final stretch of our season.”

Up Next: The Pack has a quick turnaround, as NC State will be in ACC action at No. 9 Virginia Tech on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Results:
157 TC Warner (ODU) dec. With the win, Carolina closes its dual meet season at 9-9-1 while the Bulldogs drop to 7-12.

Trailing 18-13 with two matches remaining, Zac Bennett and Andre Petroski recorded decisions at 197 pounds and heavyweight, respectively, to close out the match and give the Tar Heels the victory. 174-pounder Thomas Ferguson earned a major decision that gave UNC a bonus point that proved to be the difference in the match.

Trailing until the final match, the Tar Heels kept it close due to decisions from three other wrestlers: Mike Rappo (141), Nick Stabile (149) and Corey Mock (157). Rappo, Stabile and 165-pounder Thomas Scotton wrestled the final matches of their career in Carmichael Arena.

Carolina quickly fell behind 12-0 after The Citadel's 125-pounder Richard Alarcon pinned Jake Corrill in 2:37 and the Tar Heels forfeited at 133 pounds. Rappo put UNC on the board with a 10-8 decision over Jordan Dix at 141. The Holland, Pa., native fell behind 5-2 after a period but used three takedowns over the final two frames to earn the victory.

The Tar Heels continued to chip away at the Bulldog lead with Stabile's 7-3 victory over Derek Royster at 149 pounds. The senior recorded two takedowns in the opening frame to take a 4-1 lead, and then took control with a reversal early in the second period. The win evened Stabile's record at 5-5 on the season and he has now won four of his last five contests.

At 157 pounds, Mock cut the lead to 12-9 with a 3-0 decision over Pierre Frazile. Mock earned single points with an escape, a stalling penalty and the accumulation of riding time to improve to 32-14 on the season. The Bulldogs pushed the lead back to six when No. 8 165-pounder Turtogtokh Luvsandorj registered a takedown with under 20 seconds remaining to defeat Carolina's Thomas Scotton.

Ferguson answered for Carolina with a 12-4 major decision over Kenneth Radford at 174 pounds. Ferguson took command early and never was threatened as he logged five takedowns in the convincing victory, which cut The Citadel's lead to 15-13.

The Bulldogs responded once again, padding their lead with a 6-5 win by Justin Sparrow over UNC's Antonio Giorgio in the 184-pound weight class. Sparrow took a 6-2 lead into the third period and withstood a furious rally from the Carolina freshman that included a three-point near fall.

Bennett kept the Tar Heels alive when he defeated Kelby Smith 4-1 at 197 pounds. The match was scoreless entering the third period, but an escape and a takedown gave Bennett a 3-0 lead. Smith was able to earn an escape, but Bennett held on for the victory.

With The Citadel leading 18-16, the match was set to be decided at heavyweight. Carolina sent out Petroski, a freshman who has wrestled at 174 and 184 pounds this season, due to a concussion suffered by Ben Brooks Saturday against Nebraska. The Bulldogs countered with Josh Tuck, who has wrestled mostly at 184 pounds also. Petroski jumped out to an early lead with a takedown and recorded a two-point near fall in the second period. Tuck responded to close within 5-3, but two third-period takedowns by the Carolina freshman clinched the bout and gave the Tar Heels the victory.

Carolina is next in action on March 5 at the ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va.

Results:
125 - Richard Alarcon (CIT) pins Jake Corrill (UNC), 2:37 (CIT 3-0)
133 - Tyler Sim (CIT) wins by forfeit (CIT 12-0)
141 - Mike Rappo (UNC) dec. Caldwell has 49 first-period pins for his career and has wrestled 51 consecutive matches since his last on-the-mat defeat. Caldwell lost by a medical default in January 2009.

Colton Palmer tied the team score at 12-12 after five bouts with a 3-1 decision over Pierre Frazille at 157 pounds. Palmer got the match-winning takedown with 39 seconds remaining in the match and rode Frazille the remainder of the period. Palmer improved to 26-10 with the decision.

Nijel Jones’s pin of Luvsandorj gave NC State an 18-12 lead in the team scoring, and the Wolfpack pushed its lead to 24-12 when Quinton Godley pinned Kenneth Radford at 6:54 in the 174-pound match. Godley took control of the match with three takedowns in the second and third periods, then got the fall just ahead of the buzzer in the third. Godley improved to 19-15 overall and 18-13 at 174.

Justin Sparrow finally ended the slide for The Citadel with an 8-3 decision over Pat Carey at 184 pounds. With the victory, Carolina snaps a four-match winless streak and improves to 7-8-1 overall and 2-3 in the ACC while the Wolfpack falls to 8-7 and 1-2 in conference action.

Carolina earned victories in six of the ten weight classes, including pins by Corey Mock at 157 pounds and Zac Bennett at 197. Other Tar Heels to capture victories were Pat Owens (133), Thomas Scotton (165), Andre Petroski (174) and Antonio Giorgio (184).

The match began at 125 pounds, and NC State jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when Pedram Rahmatabadi defeated Nick Shields 6-4. Shields gained an early advantage with a takedown, but Rahmatabadi took a 4-2 lead in the second period with a three-point near fall. A Shields reversal tied the bout at four, but an escape by Rahmatabadi and a minute of riding time gave the Wolfpack the decision.

Carolina evened the match at 133 pounds when Owens overcame an early 4-0 deficit to beat Dale Shull 10-4. Shull jumped out front with a takedown and a near fall, but Owens responded with reversals in both the first and second periods. The duo entered the third period tied, but Owens registered a two-point and a three-point near fall to take control and win the bout.

The Wolfpack regained the lead at 141 pounds when Darrius Little recorded a 5-2 victory over Mike Rappo. Little took Rappo down in the first period and kept the lead throughout. Rappo pulled within 3-2 early in the third period, but Little clinched the bout with a late takedown. With NC State leading 6-3, top-ranked 149-pounder Darrion Caldwell jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back in defeating Carolina’s Nick Stabile. The Tar Heel senior earned a late reversal, but Caldwell took a 7-3 decision to give the Wolfpack a 9-3 advantage.

Mock knotted the match at nine when he pinned Colton Palmer at 5:43 in the 157-pound weight class. After falling behind 2-0, Mock registered an escape and a takedown to take the lead before gaining a two-point near fall at the second period buzzer to take a 5-2 lead. After choosing bottom and escaping to begin the period, Mock pinned the Wolfpack junior 43 seconds into the third period.

Carolina took its first lead of the night at 12-9 when Scotton snapped a six-match losing by narrowly defeating Nijel Jones, 6-5. Scotton held a 4-1 lead after two periods due to a first-period takedown and a second-period reversal. The senior extended that lead to 6-2 and seemingly took control of the bout after a takedown with 0:56 remaining. However, Jones earned two points due to stalling and recorded an escape to pull within one, but Scotton fended off the comeback and took the contest.

Petroski extended the Carolina lead with an intense 4-2 overtime victory over NC State’s Quinton Godley. Godley grabbed the lead with a second-period reversals but escapes by Petroski in both the second and third periods tied the bout. The match went to a sudden victory period, where Petroski earned a takedown at 0:35 to increase the Carolina lead to 15-9.

Carolina pulled ahead 18-9 when Giorgio defeated Pat Carey at 184 pounds. The reigning ACC Co-Wrestler of the Week, Giorgio jumped out front 4-0 with a takedown and a near fall in the first period. The Johnstown, Pa., native took control early with a takedown and a three-point near fall, then ended the contest at 1:41 to record his ninth victory in 10 matches and his third consecutive fall.

At heavyweight, Carolina freshman Ben Brooks was defeated in a tight 3-2 affair by Wolfpack sophomore Eloheim Palma. Duke dropped to 1-3-1 overall and 0-2 in conference action.

“I was pleased with our tempo and our pacing tonight,” Wolfpack coach Carter Jordan said. “We were aggressive. We lost some of that at the end, but I think that was due in part to inexperience.”

The Wolfpack took a 12-0 lead after two matches thanks to Duke forfeits at 125 and 133 pounds. In the first actual bout of the evening, NC State’s Darrius Little overcame an early takedown by Mike Bell, built a 4-2 lead after two periods, and dominated the third period for an 8-2 decision. Little won his seventh match in a row and his 11th in his last 12 to improve to 22-6. The decision pushed the Wolfpack’s team lead to 15-0.

Darrion Caldwell followed Little to the mat for the Wolfpack and pinned A.J. Guardado in 98 seconds to give NC State a 21-0 advantage. Caldwell improved to 7-0 with six pins for the season. The victory was the 101st of his career and the pin was his 56th. Caldwell is second to Sylvester Terkay (1990-93) in NC State history in both categories. Terkay won 122 matches with 64 pins in his career. Caldwell’s pin was his 48th first-period pin.

No sooner had Caldwell pinned Guardado than freshman Matt Nereim, wrestling up a weight, pinned Duke’s Ryan Harding in 76 seconds to lift the NC State lead to 27-0. Nereim improved to 11-2 on the season. The match was his first at 157. He is 10-2 at 149 and has won nine matches in a row.

“Darrion looked like Darrion,” Jordan said. “What else can you say. He’s just a special wrestler. We’ve been careful in bringing him back from his shoulder injury, but he hasn’t shown any ill effects. And for a freshman, Matt Nereim has been spectacular. We’ve been using him at 149 while we’ve brought Darrion along from his injury. Tonight was his first match at 157 and he looked terrific.”

Duke got on the scoreboard with Willy Mello’s 8-6 decision over the Pack’s Colin Genthert at 165 pounds. Mello took control of the match with a reversal and three-point near fall in the first period, then staved off a third-period comeback attempt by Genthert. The Blue Devils trimmed the team lead to 27-9 when Bret Klopp pinned the Pack’s Nijel Jones in 1:02 in the 174-pound match.

The Blue Devils reached double digits on the scoreboard and cut the Wolfpack lead to 27-12 with Diego Bencomo’s 4-1 decision over Quinton Godley at 184 pounds. Bencomo overcame a 1-0 lead in the third period with an escape, a takedown and a point for riding time. Godley, wrestling his third match at 184, dropped to 18-11 overall. He is 1-2 at 184 and 17-9 at 174. Duke cut the NC State lead to 27-15 with Brian Self’s 3-1 decision over KaRonne Jones at 197 pounds.

Eloheim Palma ended the bout with a 6-4 decision over Andrew Fulk to lift the Wolfpack to the final margin of victory to 30-15. Palma took the early lead with a pair of takedowns in the first period and put the match away with an escape and riding time in the third period.

“Eloheim has struggled lately, so he needed that,” Jordan said. “He’s so intense and works so hard, and he’s been frustrated because things haven’t clicked for him lately. He needs to keep working and fighting his way through it. Darrius Little won a major decision at 141 over Brad Merriman, and 149-pounder Matt Nereim built a 14-0 lead after one period before pinning Darien Peele at 3:49. Little's victory was his 20th of the season. Quinton Godley won a major decision at 174, and Nijel Jones, who began the year at 165 pounds, pinned John Merickel at 184.

"We wrestled well in spots," Wolfpack coach Carter Jordan said. "A key match was Darrius Little defeating a returning All-American. That should put him in the top 20 and solidify a spot for him at nationals. That was huge. I thought our starters wrestled well. Matt Nereim at 149 was huge. We haven't had a freshman wrestle like that since Darrion [Caldwell]. We keep taking two steps forward and one back, but we're making progress."

Click here to find out more!

Ohio made short work of Campbell in the second match of the day, winning all 10 matches, only one of which went the full seven minutes. Caldwell, the 2009 NCAA champion at 149 pounds, trails only Sylvester Terkay (1990-93) in career victories at NC State. Terkay went 122-14 in his four-year career, which he capped by going 41-0 in 1993 and winning the national championship at heavyweight.

“I was talking to a reporter last week who told me he was looking forward to watching Darrion go from a champion to a legend,” Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan said. “He’s going to have to win another championship to do that, but he’s becoming a legend here at NC State.

“Winning 100 matches, that’s amazing. He’s only the second guy in school history to do that, and the names at the top of that list are the very greatest wrestlers in the history of this program. Some of them, like Sylvester Terkay and Tab Thacker, those guys rank among the all-time greats in the history of the sport. Darrion is making his mark as one of the great ones. The numbers speak for themselves.”

With his four victories Saturday, Caldwell now has 55 pins for his career, moving him past Thacker (54 pins from 1981-84) and into second place in the school record book for career falls. Terkay holds the school career mark for pins with 64.

All four of Caldwell’s pins on Saturday came in the first period. Of his 55 career pins, 46 are first-period pins.

Caldwell’s career won-lost record now stands at 100-12, giving him a winning percentage of .893, second in program history only to Terkay’s .897.

“It was a very special day for me,” said Caldwell, who improved to 6-0 on the season. “It was a long time coming and I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I was six wins shy of 100 back before my injury, and it was a long wait to get back out there. And it was especially sweet to have my family here for it, my mom and dad and girlfriend.”

Caldwell’s last defeat was by injury default two seasons ago to Oklahoma’s Kyle Terry, snapping a 29-match winning streak. The last time an opponent actually defeated Caldwell by outscoring him on the mat was in the wrestlebacks of the 2008 NCAA Championships. He has now wrestled 45 consecutive matches without being defeated, although that is not an official winning streak because of the default.

“I was not aware of that,” Caldwell said. “That’s just a testament to the hard work that the coaches and I have put in. The proof’s in the pudding.”

With Caldwell leading the way, NC State won three of four matches Saturday, scoring victories over Anderson, Mercyhurst and Campbell. The Wolfpack (5-3) dropped its final bout of the day, 27-18 to North Dakota State, which went unbeaten in four matches.

The Wolfpack won all nine contested bouts in a 35-6 rout of Anderson, allowing the six points on a forfeit at 141 pounds. Caldwell and 165-pounder Colin Genthert recorded pins, and 125-pounder Pedram Rahmatabadi and 174-pounder Quinton Godley each had a victory by major decision.

The Wolfpack’s second match went to the final bout on the card before heavyweight Eloheim Palma snapped a 20-20 tie by pinning Jeffrey Pollard and lifted NC State to a 26-20 victory. Caldwell and 197-pounder KaRonne Jones also won by fall, and Godley won by a technical fall.

NC State won eight of nine contested matches in defeating Campbell 29-7. Caldwell had the only pin, but KaRonne Jones won by a technical fall. Campbell had two points deducted from its team score for flagrant misconduct.

NC State got victories from Caldwell, Palmer and Godley in the loss to North Dakota State, plus Palma was beneficiary of a forfeit at heavyweight, but the Wolfpack dropped six matches, including a major decision, a technical fall and a pin.

NC State will return to action next weekend with a pair of road matches. The Pack will be at VMI at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 14, and at Virginia at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15.

NC State 35, Anderson 6
125 - Pedram Rahmatabadi (NCS) major dec. The Pack (1-3) then won four out of the next five bouts to pull within striking distance heading into the finale, but Hickman got off to a quick start in his bout with Palmer and went on to win by a 13-5 major decision.

After Bloomsburg jumped to the 18-0 lead, sophomore Eloheim Palma (5-2) got NC State on the scoreboard with a 3-1 decision over Zach Walsh. Redshirt-sophomore Pedram Rahmatabadi (7-5) cut the lead to 18-9 by pinning Sean Boylan in 43 seconds in the match at 125 pounds. Nick Wilcox stopped the Wolfpack's momentum with a pin of freshman Conor Hovis at 133 pounds, forcing NC State to record pins in two of the final three matches just to force a tie.

Junior 141-pounder Darrius Little (16-6) got three points back with a 6-1 decision over Derek Shingara. The decision also avenged a 4-1 loss that Little suffered at the hands of Shingara last week at the Southern Scuffle.

Darrion Caldwell, the 2009 national champion at 149 pounds, was up next. Caldwell was making his season debut for the Pack after missing 16 months due to shoulder surgery. He looked to be in midseason form, rolling up a 12-0 lead on Josh Roosa before pinning him at the 4:54 mark.

The pin was 51st in Caldwell's career. He now needs four more to pass Tab Thacker (1981-84) for second place in school history in career falls. The victory was the 95th for Caldwell, which places him one shy of tying Mike Lombardo (1985-88) for second place in school history. Sylvester Terkay (1990-93) holds the school records for career pins (64) and career victories (122). The Wolfpack took off Dec. 22-25, but was back together Dec. 26 in preparation for the UNCG Southern Scuffle, which will be held Wednesday and Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.

The Southern Scuffle has evolved into one of the top in-season tournaments of the college wrestling season, and its proximity to Raleigh makes it a natural for NC State. This will mark the Wolfpack’s fifth consecutive appearance at the Southern Scuffle and its sixth in the last seven years. NC State finished seventh in 2006 and 10th in 2008.

This year’s field will be highlighted by Cornell, which is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by intermatwrestle.com. Minnesota (No. 4) and Penn State (No. 7) are also ranked in the top 10 and will be in the field, along with Michigan (No. 16), Hofstra (18), Kent State (20), Virginia (26), and Edinboro (28).

“We’re excited about the Southern Scuffle,” Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan said. “It’s a great tournament with excellent competition so we get a chance to measure ourselves against top-caliber competition. And because it’s in Greensboro it gives our fans a chance to come and watch us wrestle.”

The Southern Scuffle will be the last in-season tournament of 2010-11 for NC State, which is 1-1 in duals and has participated in the Wolfpack Open, the Pembroke Classic and the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.

The Southern Scuffle also could mark the return to the mat for Darrion Caldwell, who underwent shoulder surgery in September 2009 and missed all of last season while recuperating. Caldwell, who went 38-1 two seasons ago and won the national championship at 149 pounds, is entered in the Southern Scuffle, but Jordan is still mulling over whether to turn Caldwell loose on Wednesday.

“It’ll be a game-time decision,” Jordan said. “He’s looked great in practice and he’s itching to go. I mean, he really is wrestling well in practice. At the same time, he could wind up wrestling five tough bouts or more in a span of two days. I just don’t know whether it’s right to subject him to that or not at this point. We practice one last time [on Tuesday] and how he looks then will play a part in my decision.”

Jordan said that regardless of whether Caldwell wrestles in Greensboro or not, he will definitely be in the lineup when the Pack returns to dual-match action Jan. 4-5 at Bloomsburg and Rider, respectively.

Pritts joins coaching staff at North Carolina State

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Twelve-year coaching veteran Lee Pritts, considered one of the top recruiters in the country, joined the NC State wrestling coaching staff this week as an assistant coach.

Pritts comes to Raleigh after nine years and two stints at the University of Missouri. With the win, the Tar Heels earn their second consecutive dual meet and improve to 5-7-1. Edinboro, who is pegged 21st by InterMat and 22nd by the NWCA Coaches Poll falls to 8-5 on the season.

The Tar Heel were led by pins by two wrestlers who were national qualifiers a season ago: 141-pounder Mike Rappo and 197-pounder Dennis Drury. Jeremy Shaw, (133), No. 10 Thomas Scotton (157), Kyle Kiss (165) and Ziad Haddad (heavyweight) also earned victories for the Tar Heels.

Edinboro jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead when eighth-ranked 125-pounder Eric Morrill grabbed an 18-4 major decision victory over Carolina's Brian Bokoski. Shaw, however, responded and put the Tar Heels on the scoreboard by defeating Kyle Fluke 9-6. The win was the senior's sixth in dual competition this year, which marks a career high.

Rappo kept the momentum on the Tar Heels' side when he pinned Joel Webster with only two seconds remaining in the second period. The result improved Rappo's record to 10-8 and the pin was his second on the season. At 149 pounds, Edinboro bounced back with a Torsten Gillespie 6-0 victory over UNC's Jon Burns, which trimmed Carolina's lead to 9-7.

Carolina answered with two victories in the middle weight classes to extend its lead to 15-7. First, Scotton defeated Johnny Gresheimer 4-3 to boost his record to 24-5. With his 24th victory, Scotton has bested his career high of 23 set during his sophomore campaign. Kiss followed that up with a 7-3 victory at 165 pounds over Chris Hrunka, who was filling in for injured defending national champion Jarrod King.

Two consecutive wins by the Fighting Scots cut the Tar Heel lead to just one. 174-pounder Thomas Ferguson was defeated by Phil Moricone 12-4 and Nick Tenpenny dropped a 5-2 decision to Edinboro's Pat Bradshaw.

However, the Tar Heel big guys finished strong to ensure the Tar Heels claimed victory. Drury, a senior from Jenkintown, Pa., registered his seventh pin by dispatching of Shawn Fendone in 6:14 to put UNC up 21-14 and clinch the victory. NC State won five of the nine bouts, with one match being a double forfeit. The loss dropped the Spartans to 5-7.

Neither team had a wrestler available at 125 pounds, so the match started at 133, and freshman Dale Shull got the Wolfpack off to a fast startby pinning Casey Boyle. Shull worked Boyle for a takedown 18 seconds into the match and methodically worked him to his back, getting the pin at the 0:47 mark.

The pin gave the Wolfpack a 6-0 lead in the team scoring, but Ivan Lopouchanski got half of those back with a 4-1 decision over Scott Norris. Lopouchanski got an escape to start the second period and then took Norris down, ending ther period with a 3-1 lead. A point for riding time provided the final point.

The most entertaining match of the night was at 149. Greyson Mills, wrestling as an emergency starter for NC State in place of the injured Bobby Mills, came away with a 12-10 victory over Alejandro Soto-Perez in a match filled with sudden momentum shifts. Mills opened the match with a quick takedown, but Soto-Perez escaped and then got a takedown midway through the period, which ended in a 3-3 tie after a Mills escape. Mills opened the second period in the down position and escaped, but not before Soto-Perez had a minute of riding time. Soto-Perez carried a 5-4 lead into the third period thanks to a takedown late in the second, and Soto-Perez picked up three quick points to start the third with a 9-5 lead. With time tiocking away, Mills struck for a takedown and a three-point near fall late in the period to take a 10-9 lead. The minute of riding time Soto-Perez picked up in the second period made it a 10-10 tie at the end of regulation. Mills got a takedown to win the match 15 seconds into sudden victory. That gave the Wolfpack a 9-3 lead in the team scoring.

NC State made it 13-3 with Brett Farina’s 15-7 major decision over Travis Sheehy. Farina actually trailed 6-2 late in the first period before a late reversal made it 6-4. With Sheehy battling cramps in his left calf, Farina rode him the entire second period and threw in a three-point near fall to take a 7-6 lead. Farina started the third period down, escaped and then got two points when stalling was called on Sheehy. Sheehy got a point back for an illegal hold by Farina, but Farina put the match away with another three-point near fall and a point for riding time.

Ray Ward extended NC State’s lead to 16-3 with a 7-5 decision over Victor Hojilla at 165. Ward had a pair of takedowns and a reversal in the decision.

Byron Sigmon got UNCG back on the scoreboard with a 5-3 decision over Quinton Godley at 174. Sigmon rode Godley for most of the second period and started the third with a reversal after opening in the down position. The cut the NC State lead to 16-6.

Andrew Saunders made it two matches in a row for the Spartans and got them right back into the match with a 20-4 technical fall over Colin Genthert at 184. Genthert, who weighed in at 174, gave up 10 pounds to Sauders and it showed. Saunders took a 6-2 lead after on period on three takedowns, then blew the match open in the second period with a reversal, a takedown and a pair of near falls. Leading 15-3 after two periods, Saunders got a takedown and a near fall early in the third period to end the bout with NC State leading 16-11.

Ryan Sughrue made it a one-bout match with one bout remaining when he handed Christian McClean a 9-3 defeat at 197. Sughrue built a 5-0 lead through two periods with more than three minutes of riding time, then overcame a McClean takedown to pick up the decision.

Palma dominated the heavyweight bout from the start. He took Sturgeon down in the first 30 seconds and rode him out the rest of the first period. Palma then started the second period down, escaped and got another takedown, this time riding Sturgeon until late in the period to take a 5-1 lead into the final period. Palma’s third takedown of the match plus a point for riding time made the final score 8-2.

NC State will return to action on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Virginia Tech and Virginia at Reynolds Coliseum. LaFevre started on top in the second and rode out the period with Shull earning a point on an illegal hold to go up 3-0. The third period featured a scoreless affair with the match ending at 3-0 and NC State moving up 12-6 in the dual.

Colton Palmer began the 149-pound bout with a quick takedown of Pierre Frazile, who immediately called an injury timeout and wound up defaulting at the 10-second mark. The six team points pushed the Wolfpack’s team lead to 18-6.

NC State’s Bobby Ward and Turtogtokh Luvsandorj took a 4-4 tie into the third period. An escape and riding time gave Ward a 6-4 victory and a 21-6 team lead for the Pack.

The Citadel won the last three bouts, including an injury default at 184, to close the final margin to three points at 21-18.

“Our veterans wrestled really well, and Dale Shull wrestled a solid match for his first college bout,” Jordan said. “This is going to be a good team.”

NC State 21, The Citadel 18
197 - Odie Delaney (CIT) pinned Christian McClean, at 3:44
HWT - Bobby Isola (NCS) dec. He won 181 of his final 182 high school bouts, again not counting national tournaments and national exhibitions.

As stated earlier, Palma is the third high school national champion signed by the Wolfpack for 2009-10. In November, NC State signed 189-pounder Andrew Tumlin of Harrison (Ohio) High School. Tumlin won the national freestyle championship at 189 pounds earlier this month. Two weeks ago, the Pack signed 130-pounder Dale Shull of Fort Lupton High School in Greeley, Col. Dudziak is currently wrestling with the New York Athletic Club while taking a redshirt year from Duke to compete for an Olympic spot.

Dudziak swept Brent Jones of Cavalier Wrestling Club in the finals, 4-4 and 3-0, and then 3-0 and 3-0, to take the title. Jones is the University National Champion and one of the top contenders for the Olympic spot at 211.5 pounds. Dudziak, a native of Bayonne, N.J., is now considered a favorite for the Olympic spot at 211.5 pounds, which is an incredibly strong weight class in the U.S.

In 2006 at Duke, Dudziak placed third in the ACC Tournament as a sophomore. He went 9-0 in tournaments with three falls in 2006-07 before making the decision to take a year off to compete at the Olympic level. Dudziak will return to Duke this fall as a redshirt junior and as a top contender for winning NCAA's at heavyweight.

Dudziak will next compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials from June 13-15 in Las Vegas, Nev. He is scheduled to wrestle Jones again in the first round and if victorious would most likely face Willie Parks, who he also just defeated at the University World Team Trials.

If successful again against that pair Dudziak will be in the finals of the Olympic Trials mini-tournament. The winner of that tournament faces the No. 1 ranked American wrestler in a best-of-three series to represent the U.S. in the Olympics.

"Konrad, very realistically, can win the mini-tournament and challenge to represent the U.S. in Beijing at the 2008 Summer Olympics," said Duke coach Clar Anderson. "He has come so far so fast that winning the right to represent the U.S. in the Olympics is no longer a boyhood dream, but now an expectation."

Ramirez claims second ACC weekly honor

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Following victories in dual match wins over Duke and Virginia Tech, North Carolina redshirt freshman Vincent Ramirez was named Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season Monday. The competition will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the Fitzgerald Field House as the Panthers look to establish their starting line up.

Drew Headlee
At 125 pounds, the starting position is wide open with three tough true freshman battling returning starter Zach Bowman (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Bowman was an EWL placewinner for the Panthers last season, but the new freshman should keep it interesting. Senior Mike Ciotti (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) looks to be the early season favorite at 133 pounds as last year's starter Drew Headlee (Waynesburg, Pa./Waynesburg) is healing from a wrist injury. Redshirt senior Ronald Tarquinio (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) will try to maintain his starting position at 141 pounds, but he'll be faced with some tough competition from redshirt freshman Joe Ciampoli (Altoona, Pa./Altoona).

Wrestling fans can expect to see some early season surprises from true freshman Joey Ecklof (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) as he battles for a starting position at 149 pounds. An NCAA qualifier last year, Matt Kocher (State College, Pa./State College) will face Sean Richmond (Emmaus, Pa./Easton) at 157 pounds. While Kocher will likely redshirt for the season, it should still be a tough match.

At 165, redshirt senior Justin Nestor (Transfer, Pa./Reynolds) is favored after three berths to the NCAA Championships. Redshirt junior Francis Iorfido (Johnsonburg, Pa/Johnsonburg) returns to dual meet action this year and will battle Nick Padezan (Irwin, Pa./Penn Trafford) for the starting position.

With Keith Gavin (Factoryville, Pa./Lackawanna Trail) a probable redshirt for the coming year, it will be interesting to see how Kyle Deliere (Cecil, Pa/Canon-McMillan) steps up to the challenge at 184 pounds. Also look for Mike Heist (Orefield, Pa./Parkland) to make a push for the starting position. At 197 pounds, Lou Thomas (Parkersburg, W.Va./Parkersburg), a returning starter from last season, is the early favorite. There will not be a match at 285 pounds due to Zach Sheaffer's (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) knee injury.

The Panthers are currently ranked in the top-25 of four of the nation's premier polls. The team has six returning NCAA qualifiers, two veteran EWL conference champions and an NCAA All-American. With that much talent, it's sure to be an exciting starting line up. The Panthers will officially start their season with an away dual meet on Tuesday, November 15 with a 7:30 p.m. against EWL rival Bloomsburg.

North Carolina State clinic to feature Cael

RALEIGH, N.C. -- This year's NC State Fall Wrestling Clinic and Red-White scrimmage will feature a little added sizzle with four-time national champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Cael Sanderson slated to serve as one of the clinic's instructors.

The clinic will be held on Sunday, November 13, at Reynolds Coliseum. Registration will be from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., with the clinic running from 1-4 p.m. The day's events will wrap up with the annual Red-White scrimmage from 4 o'clock until 5:30.

The wrestling clinic will be geared towards club, middle school and high school wrestlers of all abilities and experience. Coaches are invited to attend free of charge. The clinic should give wrestlers and coaches an opportunity to receive instruction on technique, while meeting and interacting with the NC State wrestlers and Sanderson, one of the greatest wrestlers in the history of the sport. His popularity has grown world-wide since winning a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

As a collegiate competitor, he became the first wrestler in history to win four NCAA titles while also completing an undefeated career (159-0) from 1998-99 through 2001-02 at Iowa State University.

In 2001 and 2002, he also earned spots on the U.S. Men's Freestyle World teams. However, in 2001 he was unable to compete when the September 11 attacks on New York City postponed the event to a date that conflicted with his college schedule. USA Wrestling decided not to attend the 2002 World Championships in Tehran, Iran, due to a credible threat placed against the team.

Sanderson was vindicated in 2003, when he won a silver medal at the World Championships held in New York City's Madison Square Garden before achieving wrestling greatness with his gold medal in 2004.

Currently, Cael resides in Ames, Iowa with his wife Kelly where he is an assistant wrestling coach at Iowa State University.

Originally from Heber City, Utah, Sanderson was coached by his father Steve with great support from his mother Debbie.
