It was a short week as the college wrestling season opened up with a few duals and roughly 10 opens across all Divisions. This week, Conference Call is abbreviated, but will be back in full force as the season fully gets set to go wide open. Conference Call breaks out a myriad of wrestling news in one spot all year long every Wednesday. It's one of the more popular Premium Service features.

Wrestler of the Week The University of Virginia opened up the week with three dual wins over Wagner, VMI and Division II Anderson. Sophomore Ross Gitomer went 3-0 with three techincal falls. |

Good Start |
True freshman Michael Chaires of Virginia opened up his collegiate career with a bang, picking up three falls on Saturday. Chaires, a New York native, had falls in the first period against Wagner and VMI. |

Not Letting Up |
The Atlantic Coast Conference named Mike Letts of Maryland its Athlete of the Week and while we went with Gitomer for the WoW above, Letts went 3-0 with two bonus victories and a solid 5-3 win over Edinboro's Phil Moricone at the Fighting Scot Duals on Saturday. |

Staying Mello |
Duke freshman Willy Mello only started one year at the storied Great Bridge program in Chesapeake, Va., but he made the most of it, finishing second last season at 160. Now, Mello's in Durham and has made the most of his first weekend of competition, winning The Citadel Open at 165 pounds, besting Virginia' Brent Fiorito in the finals. | |

Wrestler of the Week In trying to decide between Kyle Massey and Craig Henning for Wrestler of the Week, we went to the scorecards. Each had three falls, each had two first period falls. Each had a total time of 8:33 for the three falls. But Henning gets the nod because he had one second period fall, while Massey had a third period fall. |

Warming up |
Five members of the Wisconsin wrestling team opened up their season with three wins and three falls. Wins over UW-Oshkosh, Tri-State University and Dubuque -- all Division III programs -- weren't going to win the Badgers any awards in terms of toughness, however the event was held in Green Bay and gave the fans up in Packer Country a chance to see the Badgers. Collin Cudd, Kyle Ruschell, Craig Henning, Jake Donar and Kyle Massey all had three falls. | |

Most of the Big Ten gets busy this weekend with some open tournaments, but there are a handful of duals. Indiana takes on Division III Wabash on Friday while Michigan State hosts Old Dominion on Friday then the Michigan State Open on Sunday. Iowa's at the Harold Nichols Open, Minnesota over the border in Fargo at the Bison Open, Ohio State faces UT-Chattanooga. Indiana, Michigan, Northwestern will head to East Lansing for the open. Maryland will wrestle Penn State on Sunday. | |

Wrestler of the Week With Oklahoma wrestling a split lineup for its three opening dual wins over Missouri Valley, Oklahoma City and Neosho, its hard to pick one, but we'll go with Texan Will Rowe, who went 2-0 with a tech fall and a fall at 149 pounds. Rowe wrestled last season at 157 pounds. |

Graduate student Max Dean started 3-0 for his new Oklahoma team over the weekend at 165 pounds. Dean picked up three wins, but did have a 7-6 squeaker over Missouri Valley's Chris Jones. Dean wrestled for Indiana previously. |

Missouri will make an eastern swing to take on Rider and Hofstra from the CAA. Hofstra's ranked 13th, while the Tigers come in #7. Oklahoma heads to New York for the Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic. Nebraska heads to Laramie for a dual with Wyoming on Friday before wrestling in the Cowboy Open on Saturday. Iowa State hosts Northern Illinois on Thursday and then the Cyclone Open on Saturday. | |

Another Rookie Debut |
Alaska native Cayle Byers opened up his collegiate career with a rideout victory over John Buck in George Mason's 20-18 victory over The Citadel on Friday. Byers followed with a championship at 197 pounds at The Citadel Open, Byers beat Central Florida's Danny Hernandez, Duke's Robert Holbrook before besting N.C. State's Mark Jahad in the finals. |

Wrestler of the Week The EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ended November 4, 2007, was Joe Fendone, who led Edinboro to dual meet wins over Army and Maryland at the Edinboro Duals. All the dual meets started at 125 pounds, and the Fighting Scot matches with Army and Maryland were not decided until the hwt bout. After the first nine bouts against Army, the Fighting Scots were ahead by only three team points, and Fendone took the mat and decisioned the Black Knights’ 2007 EIWA place winner, Nate Thobaben, by a score of 9-2. |

Edinboro University, coming off a 17-1 dual meet record for last season and its ninth-place finish at the 2007 NCAA Tournament, kicked off the new season by winning all three of its dual meets at its November 3rd Edinboro Duals event. Edinboro opened the day by beating Div II’s Mercyhurst College 36-3, then bested Army by a final score of 21-15, and late afternoon edged the University of Maryland 19-15. Going 3-0 on the day were the Fighting Scots’ NCAA champion Gregor Gillespie at 157 and Oklahoma transfer Jarrod King at 165. |

Seven current EWL wrestlers made the November 4 Buffalo Open finals. Clarion’s Jay Ivanco edged Bloomsburg’s Ian Moser in the finals at 125, and Bloomsburg’s Ricky Donald (141) and Alex Conover (157) were runnerups. Rickey Schmelyun (Bloomsburg) won the title at 165, Dominic Ross (Clarion) finished second at 174, and Bloomsburg’s NCAA All-American Mike Spaid won the heavy weight crown. In addition, Jamie Luckett, a 2007 NJCAA runnerup, grabbed the title at 197 pounds. Mr. Luckett is taking a Clarion University extension course this semester, while finishing up his credits at Alfred State College, and could be enrolled, and wrestling for, the Golden Eagles later this season. |

Coming up |
On November 10 the Bloomsburg team will be competing in the Oklahoma Gold Tournament, and, on November 11, Cleveland State and Edinboro will be wrestling in the Michigan State Open. Also, on November 11, the Pitt Panthers head east to Bethlehem to take on Lehigh, which will be the dual meet season opener for both of those teams. |
