OREM, Utah - The green team was victorious as the 2007-08 Utah Valley wrestling squad was on display at the fifth annual green-gold intra-squad match. The green team won the 13-match duel by a 29-18 advantage.

"One of the good things about intra-squads is that it puts you in a live match situation," UV head coach Greg Williams said. "We are able to find out our strengths and our weaknesses."

The gold jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when freshman Avery Garner (133) took a 7-1 decision against fellow classman Logan Wilson (125). A second-consecutive decision by the gold team gave them a 6-0 lead after Dustin Howa took a 7-1 decision against Andrew Guzman.

In the third match of the night, redshirt freshman Nathan Gardner faced off with transfer Jeff Newby in a challenge match. In a closely contested match, Newby held on to pick up an 8-6 victory to cut the gold's lead to 6-3. Justin Morrill, who is a returning letterwinner, helped the green team even the score at 6-6 with a 7-2 decision over Joel Polkowske.

Sam Allen's 9-2 decision victory over Jacob Sheridan followed by Nate Kearsley's major decision win (20-7) win over Skyler Robertson kept the green team rolling, giving them a 13-6 lead. In the evening's first featured match Jeb Clark edged Gehrhart Vuksinick in a 6-2 decision to cut the green team's lead to 13-9.

Marc Fenwick and Ramsey Nijem wrestled in a 174-pound challenge match. The match was evenly contested early on before a pair of takedowns gave Fenwick an 8-4 lead. Fenwick was able to hold on for a 9-5 decision victory. The green team picked up two more points on a 3-1 decision by Casen Eldredge over Mark Dennis in a challenge match.

Mark Dodge picked up the first fall of the day when he pinned Zach Williams (1:53) in a 197-pound challenge match. The win gave the green team a 25-9 advantage. Billy Green got the fall back for the gold team when he pinned Josh Larsen in 4:15 to cut the lead to 25-15.

The green team scored again when Bradley Darrington beat Levi Gruwell in a 13-3 major decision to push the green lead to 29-15.

In the evening's final featured match, highly touted recruits Ben Kjar and Flint Ray grappled in a tightly contest match. Kjar recorded a second-round escape (4:30) to jump ahead, 1-0. Ray answered in the third round with an escape of his own. Behind 2-1, Ray exploded taking Kjar down, then recording a three-point near fall in the final 20 seconds to win 7-2 with riding time.

The Wolverines schedule officially gets underway this weekend when they head to Ypsilanti, Mich. to compete in the Eastern Michigan Open.

"I like our team," Williams said. "We are young so we know we have to get better. But, we have a strong work ethic and we are building for the future."
