The lineup for the Oregon State wrestling team was established at the team’s wrestle offs held at the Merritt Truax Indoor Center on Saturday afternoon. The 10 wrestlers will represent Oregon State in the team’s first meet of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at Portland State.
“It was good to see where the guys are at as a team and individually,†Oregon State head coach Jim Zalesky said. “I saw a lot of good things, but also areas that we need to work on. As coaches, it was good to see where we need to prepare and get better.â€
Only four weight classes were set prior to the match ups with junior Jake Gonzales (Enumclaw, Wash.) securing 125 pounds, senior Kyle Larson (Hermiston, Ore.) capturing 149 pounds, junior Kyle Bressler (Federal Way, Wash.) set to wrestle at 184 pounds and senior Travis Gardner (Portland, Ore.) securing the heavyweight spot.
Gonzales recorded the 7-5 decision over freshman Jesse Kane (Grants Pass, Ore.) at 125 pounds, while Larson had the second technical fall of the day over senior Louie Camarillo (Salem, Ore.) 20-5 in a time of 6:48.
Bressler earned the 6-5 decision over redshirt freshman Chris Platt (Eagle Point, Ore.), earning the deciding point through riding time. Platt earned the match up after defeating junior Brandon Perkins (Salem, Ore.) in an 8-1 decision.
Gardner defeated freshman Chad Hanke (Dayton, Ore.) by injury default in the third round of the match.
Earning four of six remaining spots were junior Ryan Enoch (Redmond, Ore.), who defeated sophomore Clifton Ivanoff (Kodiak, Alaska) in a 3-1 decision to earn the 133 pound spot, sophomore Ryan Harold (Loomis, Calif.) at 141, after defeating freshman Cameron Rosenfield (Madras, Ore.) in an 8-6 decision, sophomore Dan Brascetta (Aurora, Colo.) defeating junior Andy Hall (Hermiston, Ore.) in a 19-8 major decision at 157 and redshirt freshman Jon Brascetta (Aurora, Colo.) defeating sophomore Keegan Davis (Salem, Ore.) in a 9-4 decision at 165.
Jon Brascetta defeated freshman Joshua Stalcup (Estacada, Ore.) in the qualifying match by a 24-14 major decision.
The other two spots go to senior Neal Beaudry (Newberg, Ore.), who earned a 4-2 decision over junior Ben Harris (Langley, Wash.) at 174 pounds, and sophomore Brice Arand (Springfield, Ore.) defeated junior Kyle Sukanen (Cloverdale, Ore.) in a 15-3 major decision at 197.
The meet began showcasing four exhibition matches made up primarily of wrestlers most likely redshirting the 2007-08 season and two qualifying matches for 165 and 184 pounds.
Freshman Kelly Kubec (Lake Stevens, Wash.) recorded a major decision over freshman Tyler Phillips (Turner, Ore.) with a score of 13-2, while junior Heinrich Barnes (Pretoria, South Africa) also tallied a major decision over freshman Anthony Peressini (Henderson, Nev.) 15-6.
Freshman Shane Nay (Kansas City, Mo.) chalked up the only fall of the day over junior Coby Jones (Burlington, Wash.) in a time of 4:13, and freshman Alex Reser (Portland, Ore.) had the first technical fall of the day over redshirt junior Shamseddeen Moussaoui (Corvallis, Ore) in a score of 17-1 in 3:10.
Oregon State’s first home meet of the season is Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2:00 p.m. against Southern Oregon.
